Ordered mine non tilt model at the weekend from John Lewis, arrives tomorrow. Always go with John Lewis now as you get 2 year guarantee

Part of me is looking forward but some reviews had put me off.

The main reasons I decided on it are a) its Apple and SHOULD work with my apple devices (mac mini, mbp and ipad pro) b) it has speakers (my current 4k LG doesnt) and so cant get audio from mini and c) I am hoping it will work better with my homepod setup

Only concern is connecting HDMI to it, goiing to try the Club 3D adaptor see how that works, also need to see if there is a splliter out there that will work

Couple of questions i still have
1) Will the charging allow the replacing the Mac Mini power source ? I am guessing no
2) What specifically is the need for 3 usb ports ? i.e what will they be used for
3) How would networking with it work?

Any help appreciated
I think trying to get the ASD to work with non-Apple devices over HDMI is just asking for frustration... biggest issue I've seen is you have little control over the brightness, which for most people would be a killer. Hopefully someone can look to modify the BootCamp drivers to work with any Windows PC...

1) No, it will only charge MacBooks & iPads (or other devices that get power over USB-C/Thunderbolt)
2) I currently have a small backup SSD, and a lightning cable attached to mine - works great
3) You can connect a USB-C/Thunderbolt ethernet adapter to it as per point 2

:)

Thanks for the reply
Yeah my requirements were be able to connect a Sky Q box and Apple TV. This is because sky go is rubbish, I can live without Apple TV as its on the Mac Mini as an app

On the etherent part, what does that actually give you ?. I have a spare LAN port i can use

Not sure I'm following...

You've got 3 options

1) Connect via Wifi
2) Connect with ethernet adapter directly to your Mac (or via a dock etc...)
3) Connect with ethernet adapter via the Studio Display, that way you've got 'just one cable' going into your Mac

Worth noting as well, the display only has one 'input' so if you want to try and hook up other devices, you'd need to unplug/re-plug.

Sorry maybe wasnt clear, what I meant is why would you need the display connected to the network/internet ?

Just had a meeting with the ASD webcam.

Participant: Wow, you have great camera.
Me: What?
Participant: Yeah, looking very good and sharp.
Me: Really? I thought it's bad.
I wonder if part of the reason it looks not great is because its blowing up a ~1080p image onto a much larger section of the screen so it looks noiser and blurrier than it would otherwise. I'll be curious to test when I finally get my hands on one.

I guess is a bit a confusion here. Apple TV is a box like the Sky Q box. There is no such thing like Apple TV app on a Mac. There is a "TV" app on Mac which allows access only to Apple streaming service.

If you have an Apple TV box, there is a Sky Q app available for it that could give maybe a better experience than the Sky Q box.
Unfortunately, there is not (yet) possible to connect the Apple TV box to the Apple Studio Display...

Not a perfect solution by any stretch of the imagination, but can you airplay Sky Q from an iPhone? If you could you can airplay to the Mac connected to the screen which will display the video on the monitor. Of course you're not getting the Apple TV UI/Remote though.

Hey there, does anyone know if the ASD USB-C ports can drive external displays? I have a couple LG UltraFine 4k 21.5's (they are USB-C, not Thunderbolt) and it would be awesome if they could be daisy-chained through the ASD for a one-cable solution to my MBP M1 Max.

Hm, I don‘t have a Mac supporting Portrait, so it looks a bit different for me (there‘s just the Center Stage option). May I ask which macOS version you are on? I only got that setting in the control center once I updated to 12.3.

Just saw your other post: Yes, Center Stage not only moves to the sides but it also brings you into frame along the vertical axis.
Finally got updated to macOS 12.3, and Center Stage is there now!

Turning on Center Stage does tilt the camera view down. But, I've had several people comment already about how my camera was continuously shifting slightly. I can see it in my own camera view that Center Stage follows every little movement of my head. Apple really needs to introduce some software controls to allow the camera view to be manually adjusted/fixed in place!

Yeah i thought of that and will try, my comment though was what does eonnection the display to you network give you ?

Nothing, unless you wanted to connect your Mac (via the Display) using ethernet, if you only use Wifi in your setup no need to even think about ethernet.

I have a studio display hooked up to my 2021 16" MBP and it is frustrating me. I'm coming from an iMacPro, where I liked the camera and the volume during zoom calls. With the new display I've had two zoom meetings where I can hardly hear the people talking--even though it was always fine with just my laptop or my old iMacPro. I think it might only be using one of the speakers with zoom? Also, the feature where the camera follows you around is totally annoying with no easy way to turn it off. I am hoping that sw updates will address these issues soon.

Nano Apple Studio Display vs. Standard Apple Studio Display

So, my standard studio display arrived today from BestBuy... and I was able to compare it in-person to the nano studio display. Both are tilt-only.

Verdict: I'm immediately returning the nano -- standard glass 100%.

The nano was connected to my iPad Pro, and the glossy was connected to my Macbook Air. The Macbook Air doesn't support 2x external displays, which somehow I didn't realize until today. Because each display is getting input from a different device, it's hard to do an apples to apples comparison through these images since UI elements on iPad mirrored on the ASD are by nature blown up versus how the ASD scales the OS X UI, so they don't really compare from one to the other.

But, the best example I can show is here, between the crispness of the iPad's screen and the nano ASD it's connected to.

Look at the letters on "Set Lock Screen" on both displays.

IMG_4512.jpeg

This is not just a function of scale. There is a constant perpetual lack of crispness and almost Gaussian style blur of a few pixels around all hard lines, UI elements, and text.

It's like you're wearing dirty glasses or old contacts -- there's this lack of crispness across every single element.
I cannot stand it. The bottom line for me is that the nano ASD is impossible to work on day after day.

Here's my standard ("glossy") ASD directly in front of window and at an extremely dramatic angle -- you can see some reflection on the right hand upper side, but it's really not bad. And of course, I would never use this angle when working on the screen!

My bottom line: Any reflections you gain on the standard studio display are nowhere near as bad as having a constant, entire screen-wide blur of 20-30% across your entire display.

Here's one last picture of the two displays side by side at reasonable working angles -- nano on left w/ iPad; standard on right w/ Macbook Air:

Sorry Apple. The nano treatment is a miss for me.

Standard all the way.

Now to just wait till height-adjustable standard is in stock..........

Same conclusion I came with after comparing both side by side at the Apple Store. The Nano Texture totally kills the 5K Retina resolution to the point that my LG 32UN880-B 4K display looks even better. To me there is no point on going from the LG Ultrafine 4K to the ASD with Nano Texture. Now, Standard Glass is definitely miles ahead of any 4K display and that's the one anyone should get.

Thanks. When and if my nano texture display arrives this week I’ll do my own comparison but based on the feedback I’m guessing I’ll keep my height-adjustable standard display (yes, I managed to find one in a store :)).

What store?!

What store?!
Apple in Oak Brook, IL on launch day. I submitted the return request on the 1st to buy an extra 2 weeks just in case I preferred the nano texture screen. I must admit that the extra $400 notwithstanding, the height-adjustable display stand is extremely well designed and very pretty. Overengineering at its best.

I lucked out because the sales tax is way lower in Oak Brook than Chicago. 7.5% vs 10.25%. Michigan Avenue had the nano-texture but only tilt-adjustable on launch day. The sales tax differential paid for the gas for my trip to the suburbs about 5 times over.

After "preparing to ship" for a week, my ASD w/ VESA mount shipped today. Have a UPS tracking number that isn't in the system yet, but my order status page claims it will deliver in 2 days. It's happening....

Control center in the menu bar has the ability to turn off Center stage when the camera is on.

The issue is when you turn it off, the camera defaults to a tilt all the way up position. I'd have to angle the Studio Display all the way down to appear properly in frame.
