The real truth behind all these apple lawsuits can be surmised in just one word: Desperation.
Apple is genuinely scared that it will not be able to hold on to it's market share for too long. In fact apple is seeing the greatest evolution in computing slipping away once more. Reasons?
They are not frightened, not even a little. This is simply a naive notion. Apple has the largest mobile App platform period. The gap in developer support between iOS and Android is enormous, still today. Years after Android supposedly overtook the market share lead.
Android is an app platform for very simple Apps. For anything remotely sophisticated, The Galaxy S is a platform and the Motorola Droid is a platform. When you look at real App platforms, no one is even close to Apples market share. That is a large part of the reasons for developers support of iOS and the continued success of many of them.
a. It is impossible to hold onto a significant global market share with just one phone or pad, no matter how great they are, updated , maybe, once a year when there are other 40 at least manufacturers producing at least half a dozen phones and a couple pads each, updating them at least twice a year.
No new phone outsold the iPhone 4 in a quarter when it turned a year old. (Unless, like some, you believe Apple sold 16 million iPhone 3GS last quarter).
The updates you think are necessary just canibalize each other. Why do you think 2 of the top 5 Android manufacturers are losing money? How sustainable do you think that is?
...They are computing and communication platforms. And here's the next bit:
Even more so in the tablet space. This is precisely why Android is getting trounced. They have no app support. Applications are what people want on a computing platform.
b. Dealing with communication and computing platforms you need other things to keep your market captive to your products. You need an ecosystem that will be sustainable. Apples ecosystem? The hardware, app store and soon iCloud. All nice. But not enough. Apple does not have any social networking platform. They do not have a far reaching email communication platform. Their mobileme email platform is as good and dead. The app store is no longer the only place you can get good quality apps. Furthermore apples insistence on a 30% cut for in app purchases and subscriptions is pushing publishers and content providers towards the browser based experience. Please note that I am not querying whether apple is right or wrong on this. Am just stating the facts.
This whole statement is just foolish. No one can come close to competing with Apple on ecosystem. The only company that may ever have a chance is Amazon.
c.The hardware:. Apple does offer great hardware. Only a fool would put that to question. Yet again only a fool would fail to realize that Samsungs galaxy phone and especially the galaxy tab have got some impressive specs. Some of them better than both the iPhone and iPad. And if you dispute that please take a look at direct comparisons. Specs by themselves though mean absolutely nothing for the greatest majority of consumers. Yes every single one of them will drool over an iPhone but the 80% will go buy any other phone for a myriad of different reasons.
Specs matter a lot less then experience and capability. Apple's lead in both cases is significant and growing.
Now take a moment and have a glance across the fence. What do you see?
a. The hardware quality divide is almost breached and keep in mind that this means nothing to the majority of consumers.
You confused quality and specs here. Hardware quality is very important to consumers. Hardware quality is a big part of Apple's edge.
b. The Goliath called Google is marching with the following:
1. The biggest and most reliable search engine.
2. A massive email based platform.
3. The fastest and most secure browser, all things being equal
4. A newly branded networking site which is not going to kill Facebook. It is different. It functions in a different realm and it will be as successful as Gmail.
4. An already established and highly successful mapping service
5. A highly successful mobile os
I am actually not sure anything but #2, #4 and maybe #5 is true. Baidu may have more search activity then google. I like Chrome but it has its share of problems and the new Safari certainly gives it a run for its money. I think it is way to early to predict anything about Google +.
Now pause for a moment and consider how many of these services you are already using. Now if you as an apple die hard supporter can be so engrossed in the Google universe whats to stop the other 80% of the global population to adopt not just these services but also the hardware they function on?
None of those things require an investment, they really aren't part of the Android ecosystem at all. In fact every single one of them (besides Android) can be used on an iPhone. Most of them with custom apps built by google.
Apple has users with large investments in App libraries. THat is a meaningful eco-system. Android users don't tend to pay for very many apps at all. Love it or hate it, lock-in is real and is a big part of what eco-system is about. Which one of your google attributes do you think locks people into Android?
I like google they do have a lot of good services. They also make sure all of those services function well on iOS.
Essentially apple is not just fighting to retain market share. It is fighting for its survival as a closed ecosystem.
Disclosure: I have, I am and will carry on being an apple hardware and software user.
They are fighting to protect their investment in R&D. I am not sure if you noticed, but none of these products Apple is complaining about is selling very well. It is unlikely you have ever even seen one outside of a store. They are no threat at all. The Xoom and the Tab are a prime example of Android's woes. You would call them both Android tablets even though they are largely incompatible.
