Why not? MS managed to have MagSafe & dGPU in their Surface Book (which is absolutely gorgeous by the way). Just chuck in a quad-core option and you've got the perfect laptop.
Welcome to Surfacegate

Microsoft is having its iPhone 4 “Antennagate” moment, thanks to rampant reliability issues with its Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 devices. But rather than publicly face the problems head-on, the software giant has retreated behind a veil of silence. ...

An Alienware 18" is a lumbering , behemoth of a laptop, the MacBook Pro 17' was 2 inches bigger than the 15, with the rest of the dimensions in proportion, also the best laptop for pros in my opinion.

Maybe so, but some of us needed the power and screen size. I happen to have 3 of them 2 to 3 years apart. In my opinion, one of the only Apple laptops that fit my work needs.

Is this the "Royal We" they're talking about? Is Macrumors officially not expecting MacBook Pro announcements? I have to say, when you consider how far behind Apple is on high-end laptops, I'd be pretty shocked if they didn't at least make an announcement. I mean, if they wait until fall/winter, won't the competition in this sector already be onto Kaby Lake? (I suppose they could skip two generations, but that just seems bizarre...)
Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot if they don't make the announcement. There have a ton of product releases from competition (HP, Dell, Razer, Acer) that can now compete with the RMBP. As an Apple enthusiast I have been waiting forever for Apple to release an updated RMBP but consumers can only wait so long before the opportunity cost and impatience gets the best of them.

Al I the only one who likes hardware media buttons better? #Innovation
...uhmm... better than what? We have no idea what the implementation will actually be. For example, they could be similar to buttons (maybe with haptics), but with the option of changing the visual appearance. I can see how that would be very useful.

i understand why people are saying no new macs at WWDC... but the build to order options for high end macbook pro have jumped up to 10 days delivery. a couple weeks ago, it was 1-3 days. this is giving me an inkling of hope that we might hear something...

Predicting Apple's plans for the 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro is difficult because there are a lot of confusing rumors about the two machines.
The only thing that's clear there won't be 17" model... :(

The 17" MBP was a lumbering, overpriced, behemoth of a laptop. It's not coming back.
No one forced you to buy one. It was a great machine and surely it's a more useful product than some kitsch gold watches.

I wonder. If the new laptops have a new OLED function bar, is it possible they can't be released until the next version of OS X in order to provide full support?

The 17" MBP was also a pound heavier than the 15" – and the rest of the dimensions weren't in proportion, as evidenced by those massive speaker grills on either side of the keyboard, with the smaller LCD bezel.

It cost around £500 more than the 15" (which at the time, cost about £1500). The 17" came with a 5400RPM drive as standard, with 4GB RAM – barely better GPU and CPU than the 15", either – and with all that extra weight and bulk, you got identical battery life.

Well you cannot add extra 2inches and remain the same weight, given the 17 had the same dimensions as the 13.

Sorry, which model are you talking about? From 2009 to 2011 there were three models changes.

It's the best apple laptop I owned, my 2009 17 is still going strong.

The only thing to make me think that Mac's will be announced at WWDC is that developers will get a chance to work on their apps for the OLED display.

I'm confused by this post. This is a pic of the hinge on the Surface Book, a popular laptop made by Microsoft. Are you saying you haven't seen this before?
I haven't. I work at a university where most students have MacBooks. Everyone on my team in marketing and communications either has a Mac or Windows desktop, along with a shared MacBook Pro that we use when we need to go present, and everyone has iPads. I've seen surfaces before, but not with a thick keyboard. They're pretty rare and mostly used by people in IT on campus. I have no interest in Windows, so I don't pay attention to them at the store, or in articles online. But I wonder if a smoother hinge design similar to that could be used with a flexible display…

They can release a special build for the new machines. They've done this in the past.

Could not disagree more - different tools for different jobs. Popped an ssd in mine and it performs like a dream - love the screen real estate.

spot on!

last year i was fortunate enough to get a new main board fitted free due to the gpu issue (early 2011 model), with an ssd it's still a great laptop, there's just no substitute for a big screen, plus there're nearly enough ports, dvd drive, battery is still fine

the day it has to be retired is likely to be the day i call time on apple, whether windows or linux is tbd, and after c. 20 years of macos/osx it's something i really do not want to do, but apple is only offering me a downgrade at the moment

i don't want thin, i don't want small, i want a big screen and plenty of ports!

2014: MagSafe included on Apple Watch.

2016: MagSafe discontinued on all Macs.

INNOVATION

In regards to the Touch ID on the upper right of the function bar, I can already hear J. Ive at WWDC...

"While creating the new MacBook Pro, we had a magnificent thought. Why not integrate Touch ID into the power button? So every time you awake your MacBook you are securely unlocking it."

I have my heart set on the 15" rMBP, so these Q4 rumours pretty much kill any hope of getting something extra in the back to school offers :(

Look Apple's Pro laptops should be a commodity by now. We don't needs any fancy introductions or keynotes. We don't need any breakthrough features. We don't need lighter. We don't need thinner. We don't need touch screens. We just need to latest fastest CPU and the latest fastest GPU with 16+ GB of memory, and the latest SSD, or even 2 SSDs that total about 1 TB, and a screen bigger than 15 inch. We need ports, must have HDMI for presentations, and at least 3 additional ports for external devices (hard drives, scanner, camera, audio interfaces, video interfaces, etc.)

All that needs to happen is for this hardware to show up in the Apple store, that way Tim Cook or Johnny Ive don't not have to be embarrassed by the apparent lack of innovation and new features.
