October/November and still ships with Skylake...
Get with the program Tim!
If the rMBP is updated in4th Quarter this year is there actually any point in going with Skylake? Isn't Kaby Lake released by then (obviously assuming no Intel delays)?

No - the Skylake chips appropriate for the MBP literally just started shipping. If Kaby Lake is on a similar schedule, those won't be out til around this time next year. There are many variants of these chipsets and they don't all come out at the same time.

Good grief. I'm all for form factor changes, but can they please just slap a Skylake chip and upgraded dGPU in a current form factor case and ship that until their new hinges/OLED bars are ready.

Yes, this refers to us here at MacRumors. From everything we're hearing, it sounds like WWDC is going to be software only. There's always a chance of a hardware announcement because no one knows Apple's plans but Apple, but it's sounding unlikely.
Based on what? The article doesn't say.

Earlier articles (in April) suggested that "WWDC would be the most logical time to expect these new Macs to debut" and that slimmer 13" and 15" Macs using metal injection-molded hinges would be "likely scheduled for release after WWDC 2016." Citing Ming-Chi Kuo, subsequent articles revised that speculation to suggest that 13" and 15" Macbook Pros would instead "arrive in the fourth [calendar] quarter of 2016" and that "we will need to wait until the fall months to see the launch of the new devices."

This article, however, appears to go a step further, stating that "We are not expecting to see MacBook Pro announcements at WWDC."

Is that based merely on the (reasonable) conjecture that a product launch announcement would not be made at a conference occurring 3+ months ahead of expected (rumored) commercial availability? Something else? Again, the article doesn't say.

If only! I still really like the current design, and truth be told would much rather have physical function keys.

Announcing the new macbook pro s. Why not some interim upgrades using the current form factor. Nice way to keep up with CPU and GPU changes.

Am I the only one dreading losing my Esc and Function keys? I use many of them--by touch--all the time. If they're really gone, I'm either buying a current gen MBP (that I've been avoiding) or ditching Apple as a laptop entirely.

Any good hackintosh laptops??

Honestly this very evident back and forth makes me think there has to be some serious engineering problems with the new Macs that may make the first iteration a real lemon. Like assuming these initial projections were based in solid rumors and timelines, and now looking at a 3 month delay indicates something has to be holding these up which I assume can't be production since nothing beyond the OLED strip is significantly new. I may have to do a clean wipe and reinstall on my 2011 to get it running to see the 2017 MBPs

So no new Macs at WWDC :( Why Apple?!? Haven't we waited long enough? Just take my money already!
Because Kaby Lake mobile has:
- Native USB 3.1 (generation 2) support
- Support for Thunderbolt 3
- Up to four cores as the default mainstream configuration
- Support for Intel Octane Technology
- Full fixed function HEVC Main10/10-bit decoding acceleration & VP9 10-bit decoding acceleration (iTunes, AirPlay, ...)

The 17" MBP was a lumbering, overpriced, behemoth of a laptop. It's not coming back.

Lumbering and behemoth are subjective. I bought the first 17" MBP 10 years ago instead of getting the 15" because I wanted the big screen and went on to use it for 6 years, including an SSD surgery in 2010 which kept it plenty fast for my needs.

Overpriced in comparison to what? When I bought mine, a similarly spec'd 15" cost the same. I looked at it as getting the same innards for the same price, but with a much larger screen.

The longer Apple takes to update the MacBook Pro range, the more likely it is that the company will dump Intel for ARM. Or skip Skylake.
They skip Skylake because they want HEVC for iTunes and AirPlay, Intel Optane support, native USB 3.1 Gen 2 support and support for Thunderbolt 3.

They should at least let us know they're still making computers.
iPads and iPhones are also computers.

Is this the "Royal We" they're talking about? Is Macrumors officially not expecting MacBook Pro announcements? I have to say, when you consider how far behind Apple is on high-end laptops, I'd be pretty shocked if they didn't at least make an announcement. I mean, if they wait until fall/winter, won't the competition in this sector already be onto Kaby Lake? (I suppose they could skip two generations, but that just seems bizarre...)

...especially because they updated the MacBook to Skylake.

Based on some more recent information we're hearing. To give a specific example, Mark Gurman and Rene Richie have both said to expect only software.

Look Apple's Pro laptops should be a commodity by now. We don't needs any fancy introductions or keynotes. We don't need any breakthrough features. We don't need lighter. We don't need thinner. We don't need touch screens. We just need to latest fastest CPU and the latest fastest GPU with 16+ GB of memory, and the latest SSD, or even 2 SSDs that total about 1 TB, and a screen bigger than 15 inch. We need ports, must have HDMI for presentations, and at least 3 additional ports for external devices (hard drives, scanner, camera, audio interfaces, video interfaces, etc.)

All that needs to happen is for this hardware to show up in the Apple store, that way Tim Cook or Johnny Ive don't not have to be embarrassed by the apparent lack of innovation and new features.

You don't get Apple's MO, do you?

I agree, they have lost the leading edge. Some better PCS are on the market, so of Apple waits too long, they will lose customers.
I think too much stifle and no substance, Jobs is turning over in the spirit world.

Only the desktop Kaby Lake has native USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Thunderbolt 3 support. The Y, U, and H chips do not.

Welcome to Surfacegate

Microsoft is having its iPhone 4 “Antennagate” moment, thanks to rampant reliability issues with its Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 devices. But rather than publicly face the problems head-on, the software giant has retreated behind a veil of silence. ...
I didn't realise this was still a thing or has been a thing since around 4 months ago.

SurfaceBook 2 is on it's way though and fingers crossed there won't be the same teething troubles with Intel.
I can't wait to get my hands on one. :)
