I'm not very thrilled about any changes they make to the hinges. The current ones are perfect, they're stiff and they stay stiff. At least mine do. In other laptops I had they usually gave up after 2-3 years and the screen started to wobble. I still have 2009 unibody that's seen some heavy use, to this day - zero problems with hinges.

My 2011 13" unibody hinge ended up with some serious wobbling by 2015 from normal use. I had to disassemble the the screen from the rest of the laptop to tighten them back up.

My first thought. I use it all the time in spreadsheets.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Plus the new "butterfly switch" keyboard is garbage. It's like typing on plywood.

I'm sorry but you're wrong. These leaked pictures clearly show USB-C ports and not these ports in the patent.

MagSafe's gone! :(

'Virtual' function keys and the disappearance of a tactile escape key will do my head in. This sounds ludicrous. But, you know, Apple knows best!

I am so sick of Apple milking consumers, their time between updates gets longer and longer.
They now are even skipping generations of Intel processors.

For real, do you think they should have multiple updates per Intel processor generation? When for the majority of their updates in the last decade, a new Intel processor generation was the main change.

The longer Apple takes to update the MacBook Pro range, the more likely it is that the company will dump Intel for ARM. Or skip Skylake.

No, no it isn't. What is it with you ARM guys and your "Dump Intel" conspiracy theories? ARM processors can barely run desktop level applications that are coded specifically for them, let alone run x86 apps via emulation the way the first Intel Macbooks did with apps coded for PowerPC's RISC architecture via Rosetta. It's clear you lot know nothing about the way computers work, so please, resist the urge to speculate until you've educated yourself a bit more.

The escape key will still be touch-typable, it'll be at the left-most edge of a thin channel. I don't anybody who can touch type any of the other function-row keys (with maybe the exception of the eject key at the other end of the row).

Is this the "Royal We" they're talking about? Is Macrumors officially not expecting MacBook Pro announcements?
Yes, the 'we' refers to Macrumors (either as an entity or as the editorial team of people at Macrumors).

Soon they'll be so thin you won't be able to see them.
How freaking thin does a laptop need to be? Just produce better hardware and get over this thin obsession.
Apple is starting to get more obnoxious than Microsoft

One thing I really like about the current hinge is that I never see it. When the Macbook is closed, the entire rectangular solid is flush and has no protruding hinges or cavities. Likewise, when it is open, the hinges are out of the way and tucked behind the corpus of the computer where I don't really see them at all.

As long as the new hinge design keeps things flush and intrusive, which should be the case, then I won't complain about it.

I've been waiting 10 months for an update. My 2008 macbook pro crashes on a weekly bases. I may be forced to purchase a Windows machine for the first time in 15 years. I cannot pay a premium price for 2 year old tech. Sorry, Apple.

So said people when notebooks weighed 8 lbs and were 2" thick, then when notebooks were 6 lbs and 1.5" thick, and then when notebooks were 4.5 lbs and 1" thick.

Smaller and lighter is almost always better. The competition has 15" notebooks that are nearly as light as the 12" MacBook. Granted they are using 15W chips and are flimsier than the MacBook, but the 13" Pro could easily drop below 3 lbs (and possibly even the 15" can do so) these days.

The 17" MBP was a lumbering, overpriced, behemoth of a laptop. It's not coming back.
Nobody is forcing you to buy it. As it basically used the same hardware as the MBP 15, the MBP 17 is sorely missed... a 5K 17" rMBP would be heavenly.. Too bad Apple can't keep a dGPU running longer than 3-5 years from that era of defective dGPU's due to poor cooling.

I am so sick of Apple milking consumers, their time between updates gets longer and longer. Their arrogance knows no bounds.

Arrogance with incompetence heaped on. Tim Cook doesn't understand product.

I am becoming very bitter about Apple's foot dragging. Some of us need to purchase for businesses. In good faith, we switched to Apple, and Tim Cook seems much more interested in running around mouthing off about helping terrorists elude the FBI and Gay rights than making computers. We have waited long enough. Every other significant manufacturer delivered Skylake months ago. What on earth is going on over there? Microsoft has come a long way, maybe it's worth another look.

The politics is strong with this one.

If you've noticed, all the Skylake notebook PCs have been of the 15W or Core M variety. They also have had lots of issues with firmware, most notably Microsoft. Intel has had some stumbles recently. The 28W Skylake chips Apple presumably would use in the MacBook Pro have just been released.

If they slim and trim it a bit, it's fantastic.

I'd way, way rather transport a very slightly bigger laptop (that I don't notice a difference carrying) to have 17" 16:10 screen at 1920x1200 resolution.

Could you imagine it being 3840x2400 at 17.3"? Now there's a device you can get some work done on.

Look Apple's Pro laptops should be a commodity by now. We don't needs any fancy introductions or keynotes. We don't need any breakthrough features. We don't need lighter. We don't need thinner. We don't need touch screens. We just need to latest fastest CPU and the latest fastest GPU with 16+ GB of memory, and the latest SSD, or even 2 SSDs that total about 1 TB, and a screen bigger than 15 inch. We need ports, must have HDMI for presentations, and at least 3 additional ports for external devices (hard drives, scanner, camera, audio interfaces, video interfaces, etc.)

All that needs to happen is for this hardware to show up in the Apple store, that way Tim Cook or Johnny Ive don't not have to be embarrassed by the apparent lack of innovation and new features.

"We"="You"

For a mobile computer, thinner and lighter is better. Its easier to carry around. Thats what laptops are for.
Wait to see how the touch strip is implemented before you say you don't need it.
With the move towards cloud based storage and servers, the need for 2 internal storage drives is very low. You can already get 1TB SSD which is going to be enough for 99% of users.
If YOU need an HDMI connection for presentations, then buy a USBC to HDMI cable. If someone else needs VGA they can do likewise. USBC will spit out whatever anyone will need...
16GB of memory is already standard on the 15"mbps. Id expect to see 32GB on the high end this release for sure.
Bigger screen? If they can reduce the bezel and fit a 16" into the existing form factor that would be awesome...
