Don't know how many they sold, don't care. Went to the grocery store today and realized after I checked out I'd left my wallet at home and I started to freak a little (the line of people behind me was quite long) and then I saw the NFC symbol on the CC terminal and used Pay on my Watch. Saved the day! Also tracked my walk home, and controlled my music. i LOVE the Watch. Also love the look on peoples faces when I used the Watch to pay. I know that sounds a bit petty, and I'm sorry, but it's true.

You had your phone on you anyway so it didn't make a difference.

I'm beyond happy with mine. I have the space black link bracelet 42mm Apple Watch. The mechanical engineering on the link bracelet is beyond any watch I ever owned and I owned watches in the $1-3,000 range. It is hard to understand how good it is until you use it, and once you use it you cannot go without it.

Here is some reasons you should buy it:

1.) You already wear fashionable watches on a regular basis, than why not buy the Apple Watch. It does so much more.
2.) You are interested in a wearable fitness device, than there is nothing better than the Apple Watch.
3.) You are used to widgets from android, this is so much better, you don't even need to pull your phone out.

Basically, if you are a busy, active, and/or an organized person, the apple watch will make your life so much easier. If you are the type of person that forgets to charge their phone on a daily basis, you don't live by a strict schedule, and you have no interest in ever going to the gym, well, than the watch is not for you.

One reason: AAPL

Those that are hung up on how many watches are sold are most likely investors that want to know where to allocate their investing funds.
I think investors are mostly interested in dollars received over units shipped. Some may be making longer term strategic decisions anticipating declining growth in the iPhone and wondering what will continue to power the company but if they're that savvy they almost certainly realize there's nothing to be learned from supply constrained first quarter data.

I think most of the people counting units are people in forums like this that have picked a team and want to shout "we win" at shadows of data.
What I don't understand is your need to counter other people's commentary. I don't disagree with you and many of your posts. However, that doesn't mean other people can't interpret or believe what they want to. And I realize I'm a little hypocritical when I say that. But since there are very few "facts" here - there's bound to be a variety of interpretations.

So... that. :)

And the ideas of "flop," "killer" and other descriptors is really subjective anyway. My nearest bodega selling 1M oranges would be HUGE. Sunkist selling 1M oranges is not much.

Apple's biggest "enemy" is very likely itself. For many reasons.
I'll say this: at least Rogifan counters with thoughtful arguments rather than the "yes it is!", "no it isn't", "yeah, well Samsung!" nonsense that fills most of these threads.

As you say, there's very little new data and what data there is is mostly estimates based on expected correlations with other numbers that are extrapolated from year ago web analytics, blah, blah, blah. Based on that, people in the forums make absurd assertions. I think most of them are probably bait by lonely people who hope saying "Apple watch is a bag of hurt" will get someone to talk to them, even if it's just to say "yeah, well at least it's thinner than Samsung's bag", but some of the posters might have something interesting to say and just haven't figure out how to formulate the argument yet.

Engaging a few of these people with a reasoned response, or watching Rogifan do it, makes the forum a more interesting place. Calling out the nonsense also encourages people to be ready to support their assertions with complete thoughts.

I think that's why they equipped this place with a reply button in the first place.

It looks disgusting though. Not joking either. I've never seen such an UGLY watch sell for that much money. I would seriously pay Apple NOT to wear it. No way in hell would i put that rubbery piece of crap on me just to look like some loser wearing a watch that looks like it came out of a McDonald's Happy Meal.

I'd rather and proudly buy and wear a mechanical watch for the SAME PRICE, if not LESS!

All this means is that Apple negotiated ASE really well for their boxes if they aren't breaking even on their packaging. If Apple paid their supplier more money per box, they would be breaking even. So, again, all this tells us is that Apple is really good at negotiating prices from suppliers and doesn't tell us wether the apple watch is selling "well" or not for Apple. Apple shareholders are not interested in how much money ASE is making.

So what? Right now Watch is an iPhone accessory. The idea that 3+ million sales in one quarter - when there were supply constraints and for 2+ months it wasn't even available in stores - equates to a flop is ridiculous.

And as far as Apple not managing expectations...I think Cook saying last October that Apple would be reporting Watch with accessories gives a pretty good indication of what their expectations were.

It's all corporate speak for damage control. It's a flop dude... a big time useless gimmick. And it's UGLY.

It's certainly looking grim for the ill-fated Apple Watch.

It looks as though it will struggle to reach 10 million sales in its first year. I'm afraid to say that if it drops below 10 million, it will be a failure. The market appears to be seeing the same thing: Apple's share price is down 6% in the past three months, which reflects the appalling launch and reception of this strangled trinket.

The long-term implications are gloomy. If this is the best Apple can do post-Steve Jobs, then the glory days of Apple are over, and we must endure the end of the Golden Age of tech.

In a way, there's a certain rightness to the story. Man can achieve great things, but it's not a straight line. Here we are, living in a lull of innovation. At least it affords us time to muse upon brighter days, when we were wowed.

Perhaps Apple could bring out its own cider, the easier to drown its sorrows.

How is selling 10 million of anything at a substantial profit a failure?

10 million devices at, say, $500 ASP, 30% margin means... $1.5B in profits.

That's about the same as the profits of Macy's, a bit ahead of General Mills and a bit behind Western Digital.

Fair enough. My frustration is really around expectations and this idea that if its not a must have that means it's a flop. Is that bar now for every Apple product, gen 1 has to be a "must have" or it's a flop? Honestly I think that's ridiculous. iPad is the only Apple product that took off fast but now we're seeing it decline and level off a bit.

Lol, man i saw a few of your posts.....and I just picture some dude yelling at his computer over apple watch blogs. Anyway, I do agree with you. People seem to be its IMMEDIATELY iPhone level of sales or bust. The watch was never going to be that popular. It's 95% gizmo and 5% fine jewelry, and was only going to have niche appeal. Maybe that will change over time, but I don't think people will start ditching their Movado or Rolex for it.

All that bashing on those early adopters! If there were no early adopters, - there would be no iPhone 3G, because everybody knows, what a "crap" it was compared to the 3GS... :)

Back on topic: what values are those analyst's expectations build upon??!! How about just comparing it to the competitors sales on that 'disappointment scale'?

I don't think its that bad.

Do I think Apple erred in the apple watch, yes, there were missteps. Partly not managing expectations, partly in rolling it out (read the dopey reservation thing) and partly not defining better what the watch can and cannot do.

With that said, I think the apple watch is the best smart watch out there, and I think its selling in numbers that are profitable to apple, just not hugely profitable.

I think it's a lot worse than you realize/

iPad sales are declining
AW is a failure
Beats Music is unknown

If Beats music under delivers then it shows that without Jobs, Apple can no longer innovate.

What the hell expectation? The 30M a year one, the 20M one, the 15M one....
The shell game those con artist play is wondrous in its slimy transparency.
Apple will not meet their imaginary expectations ever!
Well growth--demand increasing month after month--would be a good start.

Well, there is the rubbery piece of crap version for $399 as you put it, than there is the link bracelet one for $999. BTW, there isn't a single smartwatch out there that looks as good as the Apple Watch.

Moto 360 comes to mind, which imo is what I had pictured Apple watch would be like but even better.
