Maybe we’ll actually be getting those redesigned round volume “buttons” like we were allegedly going to get with what, the iPhone 13?
I do miss the round volume buttons too. It was nice and simple.

Hopefully this also means the ringer switch becomes solid state and can be changed via software! Finally be able to have ringer set automatically via Focus.

Sometimes I do wish Apple can get inspired by Blackberry Passport. Why not offer an iPhone with a physical keyboard, LOL. That's something different! Forget about the foldable iPhone.

I think the issue with physical keyboards and a touch interface screen is that the UX ends up being clunky as you’re having to shift between the keyboard and screen. Plus, all that space for the keyboard mechanicals becomes added weight and likely a smaller screen - or a more complex sliding mechanism to hide the keyboard.

Physical keyboards made sense back when our phones were really just a phone with basic texting / email capabilities.

For the love of all that is holy, if they do this I hope they sense pressure and not skin contact. Otherwise every single case design that covers the buttons will no longer work.

Ironically I haven't had any buttons fail on iPhones since my iPhone 5. The current design is robust and reliable. I don't know why they're changing it.
1. Apple's haptic buttons to date have been absolutely world class. People randomly deciding to cast doubt on them now is strange to say the least.
2. This isn't about buttons failing. That's just a silly supposition made by the author. Undoubtedly this about water proofing and internal design changes.

I meant it actually and that's the reason. I wipe the iPhone with disinfectant frequently. But I'd like to wash it like I'd my Apple Watch. I know the phone is water resistant but as I understand it right now that's more for accidents than deliberate immersion. Rather than wiping it carefully whenever I come back home each day it would be more convenient to just put it right under the faucet and wash it with soap.
Good lord, don't wash or pour disinfectant on your electronics. Get a UV sterilizer. It will do a much better job and you won't risk damaging the device.

YESSSSS OMG!!! Now that plastic spacer where the sim card slot used to be is going to have that space utilized with these new Taptic Engine’s! Shows how much planning goes into the iPhone in regards to interativity and it’s evolution. This just settles it imo. Solid state buttons for the win!!!!

😄😄😄

Non-Pro models won't have haptic buttons nor SIM tray in the U.S. The space will still be filled by a plastic spacer.

And in reality, I seriously doubt Apple will remove SIM tray globally next year.

I understand your concern, but I have been using Lysol disinfectant wipes #ad on all my devices -- Mac, iPhone, iPad -- for over a decade. There has never been any damage or discoloration caused by this. Just plain sterile goodness.

But it would be even more convenient if I can just throw my phone in the dishwasher or the laundry. 🤔

So I’ve been running my phones under the tap with no soap since the 7. No problems.

Reminds me of new cars with solid-state buttons, terrible decision, some cars brands even reversed the decision
Some people don't even realize the feedback you get from clicking the trackpad is haptic feedback as opposed to an actual click. If Apple is implementing these buttons I'm sure they'll be better than other implementations.
