Simple math. When it is no longer profitable not to have them. Right now you don't make a difference to their bottom line.

What kind of answer is that? You guys are showing me just how greedy Apple is, profits and bottom lines. Let me make my question ios simple. Name specific actions that Apple must take to win me back as a customer. You guys sound like your running for the Republican nomination. I know you guys can do it. There has to be at least one iphone user that thinks outside the walled garden.

Another Apple fan that cannot answer my question and quotes high profits. What's going to happen when profit forecasts drop when people are jumping to other platforms?

Here is my Apple challenge. What will it take for Apple to win back Android users? Anyone? Or are we going to quote profits? It's actually a honest question.

open the playbook and have variety. Choice doesnt happen with the big A, so it will be profits for awhile till those start getting chewed up and then bewilderment from the record breaking profit posters and the big A themselves. They should take notes on how bad MS kicked their you now what in the 80's-90's and will still hold 90% market, but they dont "get it" ;)

Don't be naive. All companies are concerned about profits and how to increase them. That's how they stay in business.

You are also contradicting yourself. You say Apple is greedy, yet you want a sencario where they will go after your business.

Lastly, why are you asking this forum for scenarios where Apple can win you back? Don't you know the answer to that?

In order to answer your question, about examples of how Apple can win you back, you have to realize one thing. Somebody has to care enough about you and your question.

Has anyone tried the Samsung Note? A 5.3in screen sounds perfect for a phone so long as the width is not too much. After all, if it's too thick to hold with one hand then the actual phone part is in trouble.

Why not make the 4' display 1024x768?

This way all iPad apps are already "iPhone 5" compatible, and I think (not sure) that at this size it would still be retina?

Because the ratio would be wacko

If it is possible to have a 4" screen without enlarging the phone - that would be great. I really like the size of the phone and wouldn't want it to be larger.

I don't understand the technology well enough to know if this can be done without losing any of the great sharpness and definition the Retina display offers now.

Yes, you could fit almost 4 inches into the 4/4S design. It's not really /that/ much bigger. Even keeping the current resolution, the display would not be noticeably worse. Maybe in a side by side, but not by itself.

I have. It's pretty ridiculous to make phone calls on it, everyone I know who got one now has a headset.

Maybe Apple can just add the ability to make phone calls on the iPad 3G and beat Android at their screen size game :) Actually there's a jailbreak solution for that already.

Doens't bother me. When that happens I will jump ship to the next great thing.

Funny thing is the Mac is still around and still making a profit. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, it does not have to be a market leader, it just needs to make a good profit.

What does that mean to the end user? That you have some relative confidence that the product will be around for awhile, unlike Webos.

Please, just don't increase the overall size of the phone. I don't want a huge phone to carry around in my pocket.

Hmmm... What if it was little wider but much thinner?

I intend to get one if it comes to the US. I want and intermediate device between iphone and ipad for those times I know I will need a larger screen, but not iPad large.

If apple made it a 4" screen without compromising the current physical size (as in, make the screen bigger but not the whole phone, so edge to edge screen) I might be interested, but iOS will still lag in customization (android wins here) and I dont think I can come to terms being forced to use iTunes, that needs to be optional.

It is now in ios 5

Decent answer. I could not believe how many people could not come up with a halfway intelligent answer. Open the playbook and have variety is pretty good. I would also like Tim Cook to open up because to me he is faceless. Steve Jobs was Apple and now there is no one to relate too. It's like Tim is hiding under a rock. I want to see some heart, not profit quotes and how much money is pouring in. Because when the oil runs dry it will be blackberry all over again.

Same here. Problem for MY particular uses for Macs was I cant invest a lot of cash in software with a company that acts kind of...weird if that makes sense. I know MS and Windows will be more or likely the same in 5-10 years. I'd rather invest there and have a Mac mini or a cheap MBP for certain software I like.

For a lot of people Apple will work just fine though.

The bezel needs to be there so that the phone doesn't register it as a touch command. Sure Apple can use some sort of erroneous touch rejection in software, but it'll never be foolproof.

No it doesn't.

Do you know what would make criticisms about a larger screen actually valid on Macrumors? People actually using a phone with a larger screen first.

Really, it's not hard. There are plenty of phones out there. Someone you know will probably use one or failing that they have them in stores.

It's like saying "sunlight sets you on fire if you go out in it" when all you have to do is walk out of the door to see for yourself before making an argument that has no experience to justify it.

Do you know any phone that has an edge-to-edge screen without a bezel?

Yep MS kicked their but. But MS should have taken a lesson from Apple in the 2000's. Apple is now worth more than MS. Where is the Zune? MS stayed on Windows mobile way to long, that why they got caught with their pants down.

No one ever came up with a decent challenger to the iPod/Itouch or the dreaded iTunes which is the market leader in musical downloads.

Apple is the only computer manufacture whose computer market share, however small, is rising while HP, Dell, Asus are either flat or struggling.

Now every computer manufacturer is scrambling to make an Macbook Air like laptop.

The Mac is still around and still making them a hefty profit. MS ain't gonna change that.

I will reiterate. The profitability of Apple does not necessarily help the end user become rich. It gives them confidence in that the product will be around for awhile and have support. Again I point to Webos as an example.

i can't think of a time

I intend to get one if it comes to the US. I want and intermediate device between iphone and ipad for those times I know I will need a larger screen, but not iPad large.

Can you tell me of a time where you absolutely need a 5" display, and a 4" or 9.7" display just won't do.

Microsoft has their software on 90% of the computers in the world. They sell software to OEMs.

Apple sells hardware to the consumer... at much healthier margins.

If the game is to sell the most things... Microsoft "wins"

But Apple makes more money... despite getting their "butt kicked"

So if you want a serious answer you need to tell us.
Why does marketshare matters?

Apple have enough board market share to be a viable target in almost any field. Add to that they are active in helping developers expose themselves to the market and both have been rewarded. Profits for both become a better measure as it gauges the willingness to the users to pay if something of value is offered.

The Data compatibilities that made it more important during the Windows era have gone away. There was also a critical mass issue as the market back then was very small which also is largely in irrelevant now. Has been for a number of years now that most people have computers as their primary means of production.

Not that there aren't ways for Apple to screw the position they have (Hello RIM) but the offering needed to do that would have to offer an order of magnitude improvement, In which case we are talking an iOS and Android killer.

Can you tell me of a time where you absolutely need a 5" display, and a 4" or 9.7" display just won't do.

I can think of several reasons were a 5.3"inch screen is perfect. 9.7"inch just won't do when it comes to putting in your pocket and carrying around all day. 4"inch is not much bigger then 3.5"inch and doesn't give that much more advantage. A 5.3"inch is the perfect mix between the two. The best of both worlds, the big shabang. It fits in your pocket and has enough room to fit a battery nearly twice the capacity of the iPhone and gives nearly ten hours of video playback with it.

I don't have a 4 inch display, I have an iPhone. LOL.

1: Renting a car on vacation, I would rather use my own navigation device and would prefer a larger screen. iPad can get a bit unwieldy in the front without a car mount.

2: I am visiting an area I have never been in before and know I will needs maps.

3: I am in a store like Home Depot or Lowes looking up product info.

Can the iphone be used? Can the iPad be used? Yes to both, but for me the Galaxy Note would be just right for screen images etc and portability.

Oh by the way, I don't absolutely have to have this size screen or device.

For others mileage may vary.

Apple's high profits are short term, yet to see if that is sustained. hardly any market in enterprise, server areas, losing some in the media creation field as well. Those keep long term profits going. Apple could one day be looked at as a fad unless they get long term, Wii type casual buyers are not long terms. Zune is on Windows phone 7, a good move there by MS unlike skype LOL.

No one ever came up with a decent challenger to the iPod/Itouch or the dreaded iTunes which is the market leader in musical downloads.

100% fact

Apple is the only computer manufacture whose computer market share, however small, is rising while HP, Dell, Asus are either flat or struggling.

Now every computer manufacturer is scrambling to make an Macbook Air like laptop.

The Mac is still around and still making them a hefty profit. MS ain't gonna change that.

All is true currently. MS cant, their partners need to do a better job at integration. MS obviously gives 2 craps if they sell licenses.
[/QUOTE]

Microsoft has their software on 90% of the computers in the world. They sell software to OEMs.

Thats a healthy thing Apple could have done selective licensing, for enterprise but is chasing casuals, fickle consumers who turn quickly.

Apple sells hardware to the consumer... at much healthier margins.

If the game is to sell the most things... Microsoft "wins"

But Apple makes more money... despite getting their "butt kicked"

All true, not going to argue since you are very well spoken/written there. You got to do it for the long haul, not a short term wonder. Yet to be seen if they can. I dont feel they are on the correct path to doing so, many others share this, many do not.
