Just think of how many will use that "claiming" "bullying" is happening.
So many people use the "bullying" word unnecessarily. It's such a umbrella word.
Everyone needs coddled, held and their ego stroked these days. Lord forbid any criticism come their way...."BULLY!!!"
I have to agree with this. There is certainly more pandering than years ago. To the point, most people make themselves uncomfortable in order to make sure no one is offended. There's no such thing as thick skinned.

On the other hand, there is also an inordinate uptick of bullying particularly in a mob mentality. It's unfortunate to see someone feel the need to take their own life because someone else has daddy issues and sees them as a target.

Wow guessing many people didnt read the article - just saw "emoji will stop bullying" and came to rant. Cyber bullying is rampant - and young kids kill themselves because of it. Anything that helps raise awareness - like the ad campaign, that this is really about, is trying to do. Times have changed - now insted of having to find time to sneakily pick on a kid whilst avoiding being caught by a teacher - you can now constntly message them abuse with little chance of being caught. Yeah things have changed. Reading through the comments the level of ignorance around bullying in the modern world is why the ad campaign is necessary. If just one kid doesn't kill themselves as a result of this campaign then it is a job well done. Frankly some of the ill informed commenters here should be ashamed of themselves. I wonder if they are brave enough to go up to people wearing a white ribbon and say "That ribbon wont stop domestic violence" or are they happy to hide behind their anonymity on a web forum.

Thank you Apple for supporting someone who is trying to do something.

It has, my daughters come to me saying they were bullied and I ask how, and one of them said so and so told her she was ugly, or what ever.

I didn't minimize or marginalize the issue but that's not bullying - at least as I remembered.

I've told my daughters if anyone puts their hand on them, hits/kicks/etc. Kick them in the groin - that will stop them in their tracks. Don't go running to a teacher or anything just clock them.
Bullying goes far beyond the physical realm.

Social media can be used to spread terrible lies and rumours about someone, and that can literally ruin someone's life. A constant stream of nasty text messages, Facebook posts, and Tweets can destroy someone's self esteem.

Someone who spent their youth playing with a computer in a basement may not understand this, but someone who thrives on having a social life would.

Nobody is saying that this emoji is going to magically cure the world of bullying. Nobody is saying that every person who cries "bully" is a victim and needs to be coddled. Quite the opposite, actually. It's about letting kids know that they have the power to advocate for themselves, and the support of others to do so.

We always talk about how "kids these days" are screwed for various reasons, be it over-reliance on technology, lack of social skills, lack of work ethic, and on and on and on. But let me tell you, as a teacher, I see so many wonderful kids every day that give me hope for the future. Through the madness of today's world, there are so many bright young minds that will propel society forward farther than we could ever imagine. Anything that aims to help those kids, including this campaign, gets my support.

This is really really annoying. Back in the old days, young whippersnappers, when people saw someone being bullied, if they had the courage they did something about it. Now they tweet some stupid symbol and feel all noble because they "raised awareness". How did that work out for those Nigerian girls that were kidnapped by Boko Haram? #bringourgirlshome sure worked a treat, for at least while BK laughed, the perpetually smug "raised awareness".

Biff Tanner would have laughed at this illuminati eye, then beat up whoever sent it to him. It needed George McFly to show his courage to change history.

And has it ever occurred to the holier than though proponents of this thing that it would easily be used for cyber bullying too? Disagree with me and I and my friends will eye you.

Got even one cite that more kids kill themselves as a result of cyber-bullying than because of real-life bullying?

Anything that helps raise awareness - like the ad campaign, that this is really about, is trying to do.

Wrong. Unserious measures are easily detected by kids who will quickly turn the meaning of the emoji into something (probably the opposite) of what was meant by its well-meaning creators.

Times have changed - now insted of having to find time to sneakily pick on a kid whilst avoiding being caught by a teacher - you can now constntly message them abuse with little chance of being caught.

Um...huh? Sneakily picking on a kid implies nobody knows the bully did it. Sending abusive messages leaves a "paper" trail. I think you're mixed up.

If just one kid doesn't kill themselves as a result of this campaign then it is a job well done.

If even one kid gets bullied as a result of kids abusing the meaning of the emoji, what will you say then?

The real anti-bullying campaign occurred back in the early 60's. That was when they ran the cartoon ad of a he-man kicking sand in some poor sap's face. It might have been a weight-lifting ad, if I remember correctly.

You kids kill themselves because of mental illness, not 'cyber bullying'.
Bullying has existed since the inception of man.

The pussification of America moves forward.
You stop bullying by learning to defend yourself and fighting back.
Bullies are cowards. Hit'em back and they'll leave you alone
and go after the wimps with "stop bullying" emojis.
The culture of weakness and victimization deserves to be punished.

If only it were as simple as flashing an icon later in life, when you realize the bullying in school was just a warmup for the culture of aggression and violence intentionally interwoven throughout nearly every facet of our lives.

The internet always finds away around things. Also using this symbol will more than likely get you bullied, just saying.

I can't help but wonder how an emoji will stop bullying. Will the person who enjoys tormenting people suddenly stop because he sees this emoji
Yup! Just the like the "NO GUNS ALLOWED" sign. It's been really effective, I feel safe everytime I see this sign. When somebody bully my kids I just tell to send the emoji and everything will be fine.
