Always wished Apple would sell the phone a la carte in pieces including NO box or packaging. Just a phone wrapped in thin recyclable paper cushioned with cloth that is reusable (NO I am NOT a tree hugger BUT yes I AM somewhat of an extreme minimalist). The MASSIVE waste of all that packaging and boxes and those additional cables and adaptors and such we do not need (including those stickers). That is not just bad for the environment but the weight and space they take up is a loss when it comes to how many you can fit and ship on a truck/plane. You can probably fit 4 phones stacked in the space of one inside a box as it comes. Look at that ratio. You can ship 4 quantities of phones in a single truck compared to 4 trucks. Massive cost savings on labor and all-around logistics of sorts.

How does this not make sense? The more popular the iPhone and Apple products become, the more silly putting yet another power brick into the box becomes.

Not including a charger in the box will stop no one from buying the next iPhone.

Just like releasing a one-port Mac, or a USB-C-only Mac, or a "Pro" Mac without function and escape keys, or a Mac with THE SINGLE BIGGEST POS KEYBOARD didn't stop purchases either.

All the "outrage" be damned.

At this point, I've used and followed Apple products so long that nothing surprises me anymore.

And thankfully, I've lived with non-Apple alternatives long enough to know the world won't end if I have to leave the ecosystem because I deem whatever product unacceptable to me.

Apple and I have had an "open" relationship since 2012's MBP solder-gate and the summary execution of the 17" MBP. ;)

I, and I assume most people, sell it with their old phone, therefore we need a new one with whatever phone we upgrade to. Stop being cheap and continue to include the adapter.
You only sell it because it's included in the box though, right? It raises the value of the product because you're getting the originally included accessories.

You wouldn't include a charger if it wasn't part of the package (and if you do, either you're giving it away for free or you're charging extra for it).

I don't support the move to remove the charger, and I find it extremely poor that Apple is thinking about getting rid of it AFTER they finally moved away from their 5V charger.

The issue is not the charger. It's the CABLE quality. If you think about it for a moment, it's the cable that always gets thrown away. Apple needs to add quality cables that don't break apart and get thrown to waste.

Agreed completely. The ultra-thin cables are garbage. I don't need another iPhone charger, but Apple better not take the Lightning cable out of the box. I'm lucky if one of those pieces of junk lasts a year.

Stop including the rubbish unlistenable headphones sure, but don’t stop including the charger Apple!

How do we know that Apple won’t give new iPhone buyers a voucher for a free charger if they need it?

Because it’s Apple. Also because it’s run by a money-hungry accountant.

But iPhone is not becoming more popular. 2015 was peak iPhone year (231 million units sold).

To be honest the ones they bundle I don’t use as they charge so slowly. I ended up buying PD supporting 3rd party chargers for the living room and office, the bedroom doesn’t matter so much as it can take as many of the 7 or so hours I sleep to charge as it likes so that’s the only place I could use one (although even there I have a multi port thingy instead). I’d say make it. £1 add on when purchased or within 30 days just like they should do with the EarPods which I do still actually want unlike most people here it seems!

Apple should consider starting or partnering with accessories (cable, chargers, etc) trade in or recycle programs towards newer accessories to limit all this cable waste anyway. I have many Apple and non-Apple accessories and their value in the mainstream market is minimal so instead of tossing them I just keep them it would be nice to be able to recycle towards modern compatible accessory types.

I do that too when I get new iPhone and sell old one with all stuff come with it. Same everyone my family and friends do that too. Will need charger with new iPhone or I have no charger lol.

If they do away with the charger then the cable needs to be USB-A and USB-C (or a C-A adapter) to Lightning, as they will not know what the cable is going to be plugged into as a source.
Another thought is that it will be just a USB-C cable throughout, and iPhone 12 will be USB-C only (no lightning)

USB-C has been around for years now, USB-A is dying, clumsy and inconvenient. If you can't afford $20 for a new charger you should be buying a cheap android phone

How many printers, USB flesh memory sticks, digital cameras etc. come with USB-C cables?

Majority of consumer devices (and there I also consider millions of computers currently for sale) still use USB-A. Including the last released iPhone.

I’m kind of siding towards the no charger in the box argument. Charging methods are a preference now and many people already have the kit they need.

I think Apple should do it by giving people an incentive not to want a charger included with their phone. For example, a free charger or a free iTunes gift card, at the time of purchase.

Went straight into trash. Got burnt down to goo, at waste managemt plant.
Yes i confess, unless i get $25 back, I cant be bothered to recycle such small electronics.

seriously stop bundling electronics that go straight to trash from the factory.

ive always sold mine with the phone I sell but if they don't include one then people will be selling phones without the charger and it will be fine. We'll all just keep holding onto the ones we have now. I don't see them magically breaking in 10 years so shouldn't be a big deal.

The problem is that Apple very recently switched to USB-C iPhone chargers. A lot of non-tech people (not most of us) don’t have one of these yet. My grandparents are wanting to get a new iPhone this year and they would be so confused if it came without a charger. At the very least they should include a USB-A to USB-C adapter for the cable. Maybe in a few years when more people have wireless chargers and USB-C. A lot of people are still upgrading from iPhone 7/8 and SE. Apple will also be endlessly made fun of. I can see the headlines and jokes now. They write themselves: I spent $1400 on an iPhone Pro Max and I can’t even charge it.

Over years I have accumulated a stack of Apple's USB A power adapters, EarBuds and Lightning To USB A cables from a water shorted iPhone 6 plus old iPhones (only) I trade in for cash. It is useful having multiple USB A power adapters - some are plugged in the bedroom and kitchen, one stored in my car, some in my day iPad shoulder bag and some in my over night iPad shoulder bag. Spare EarBuds in my beach backpacks, car, IT bags and lunch bag. Cables in multiple rooms to plug into Apple computer ports plus all the other locations previously listed. It is beneficial for me to have Apple provide them as I can have accessories littered around home and ready for travel preventing forgetting essential equipment and the tiresome process of relocating them. As small electronic mobile products become wireless charging capable, a solution I have found is to stock up on dual and tri wireless chargers plus power boards with USB A ports to reduce my dependence on many power outlets, power adapters and cables.

I know I said this already, but I'd be happy to sacrifice the charger if Apple would also sacrifice their stupid proprietary port in return. Every new device now comes with a USB-C port, cables are already piling up for that, why not protect the environment some more by tapping into the existing USB-C ‘infrastructure’ out there?
I don't mind reducing waste, I’m just so sick of corporate hypocrisy.

If they don’t include a charger with the next iPhone I buy, I’m getting one from Anker or AmazonBasics.

No way am I paying Apple €/$39.95 for the privilege of charging my €/$1000+ device.

The cynic in me wants to say: they’ll probably even use an MFi-like system that prevents using a third party charger and gives you a notification every time you use a non-Apple brand charger: ‘iPhone is being charged with a third party charger. This functionality is not supported on this device.’

Remember the outcry over Apple dropping the headphone jack, who the hell cares anymore.

The iPhone will still include a standard UBS to Lightning (or what ever) lead as many charge using their computer which most still use USB-A (or they have an adaptor for their USB-A devices).

Not including the wall charger is a cheap move, period. By the time that come, the new iPhone will retain its $999 price, and have less content in it with no proper compensation. If they remove the charger, at least they could’ve incuded the non-pro AirPods.

I honestly don’t care if the new iPhone has a charge in the box or not. I bought myself a wall adapter with 4 USB ports, along with 2 power outlet that has been working great for the past 5 years. It outlives 3 of my personal iPhones, and 2 Apple Watches. But yeah, I still would like Apple to include a charger in the box, OR lose it but give us free AirPods instead.

I’m still using my 5W charger came with iPhone 5. I use it to power up developer boards like Arduino, and charge wireless Logitech mouse.
