Apple Survey Asks iPhone Users What They Do With Old Power Adapters

Another issue...
Apple is the only company that uses lightning connector. If you have an iPhone there is a better chance of finding a spare lightning charger around. People may stash an old phone at the bottom of a drawer, but will keep the charger around to use at different locations which come in handy for yourself and others.

I would assume most ppl do as I do and use them at various different plugs in the home and at work. Saves having to take a charge with you everywhere.

.... well reading the responses here it seems most ppl for some reason keep them in the box!? Is that just a USA thing? I'm from the UK and can't think of anyone I know that doesn't just have them dotted around the house for convenience. Surely its a pain having to take 1 charger around with you every time you need to charge your phone?
I can’t think of anyone I know who doesn’t leave their charger on their nightstand plugged in all the time. Phone magically is fully charged in the morning; it actually only takes a few hours even with the 5W cube.

It's a bit rich of them to assume that everyone owns a device (be it a computer or a charger) with USB-C ports... while the USB-A is still most widespread standard.

Guess they can’t argue about environmental protection and then include two cables.

It amazes me how people will find excuses for Apple for not including a charger. And I’m sure Apple will spin it with being environmentally friendly and blah blah blah. And people will buy it because Apple said so.

It’s not necessarily finding excuses for Apple but letting you know when our households are so saturated with this stuff that any extra charger has no function but to clutter a place.

That’s also not an environmental “spin”as you call it but a reality for many.

Plenty other devices these days are starting to not ship with chargers anymore. USB is finally arriving in reality.

Ahhhhh! Thats why there were rumours flying around that iPhones going port-less! Because if there are no charging ports why would you need a charger, got you Tim
Correct, wireless charging only. Wireless chargers come with their own adapter so no point in Apple putting one in your iPhone box.

This is PURE truth. And then I look down at the reactions and people disagreed with it? What kind of delusional person would disagree with this statement? Ridiculous.

Never thought that there’d be a vocal group that only owns ONE USB outlet to charge a device. One day you’ll get that that’s not necessarily the only situation in the world and that millions have plenty of this stuff already at home with zero need for more clutter (waste).

are they getting rid of the lightning cable and the power block or just the power block. I would be ok with getting rid of just the power block, the cable wouldn’t take up much room.

Apple just started selling the 18W with a phone. WTF, Apple!

Apple is working on an assumption that the entire world owns an iPhone/ iPad and, therefore, has an Apple charger already, or an MFi charger, which is incorrect. This would be good if they were to use this to optimise the costs for the customer and their own selves both, and then they can claim the moral high ground of environment-friendliness.

Or they have accepted the fact that they aren't gaining marketshare going forward.

Although a lot of people are overthinking this. Tim is a bean counter, exuse me, supply chain manager. This is about simplifying the supply chain and ever so slightly increasing the profit margin. And the opportunity to sell you a $79 charger - because the True Believers will buy it.

Perhaps you live in the Surrey stockbroker belt. How big does one's apartment or house have to be so it is too onerous to go to another room to get the charger? Not a great look to have chargers lying around various rooms for convenience. How many times a day are you charging your phone?

Apple doesn't build for Europeans - they build for Americans - and sell to the world. Americans have much larger houses than the British (1,200 square feet is considered small - new construction is double that. 900 square feet is an average British house). We have walk-in closets that are bigger than British bedrooms.

At my house - One with each TV - to screen cast britbox. one in the living room (iPad); one in each bedroom; one with the computer. Another one in the kitchen; One in the bathroom, because that is where my mother charges her phone (I don't get it either).

Neither I, nor anyone I know is pretentious enough to care what it looks like.

USB-A us hot garbage and should die a painful death

Let us know when thumb drives show up not using USB-A.

I am not against it mind you, but it it isn't happening any time soon. Apple isn't much more than a rounding error in the overall consumer electronics field.

I don’t know why Apple thinks everyone has a bunch of power adapters kicking around. I have only ever have 2 power adapters in my life at any one time, the one for my current iPhone and iPad. The old ones are always sold when I resell my old devices.

I, and I assume most people, sell it with their old phone, therefore we need a new one with whatever phone we upgrade to. Stop being cheap and continue to include the adapter.

I would prefer it if it was an optional purchase, with the price discounted from the phone itself. I rarely use the ones that come in the box and I would prefer to throw away less of these.

You really think Apple would discount the price? If so, I’d be for it, but I think that’s not being realistic.

It's not like they haven't discounted the price of the iPhone before, and this would be a good excuse to do it, especially with potentially falling demand this year and next year. I wouldn't put it pass them if they don't, though.

It baffles me how many tech journalists (and people in general) are defending this move by Apple. When I read this story I thought everyone would be in agreement but nope.

If we can’t agree with something as basic as shipping a charging brick with your phone we’re all pretty screwed.
Well can’t we all agree that the world doesn’t need another 1.5 billion smartphone chargers every year?

I repurpose spare phone power adapters for other devices like Raspberry Pi, other SBCs, Chromecast, Fire TV Stick, spare tablet charger, other projects, etc. That's why it's important it's a universal standard or with an adapter like USB-C to micro USB and vice versa. No power adapter goes unused so don't be cheap and include a universal USB-C that's at least 15W. A proprietary 5W that you normally bundle is useless e-waste.

The bean counting begins... either that or the next phone is going up in price a lot and they want to make it look lower by reducing somethings.

iphone 12 - 5 cameras, 16gb storage, $1399, oh wait, there’s no charger we can sell it for $1389 😝
Could be... didn’t Samsung increase the price of their 5G model by $300?
