In a sick way I really hope they don't release tablet just to make all of the constant rumors, speculation, and 4th hand information false. Especially the rumors that state "The Apple table will have...", when they have no idea.

I also believe that if they do release one it will be somewhat underwhelming in relation to all of the stock-pumping rumors, but still potentially cool.

If nothing else, I hope something is released so people will stop speculating about it.

EDIT: I had this post sitting around. Got busy and finally put it up, and just got to check out some live blogs. So far, it's exactly what I thought. A giant iPod Touch, with standard features available on every other computer/tablet, and the only thing "revolutionary" about it is it's Apple designed GUI.

Sitting in a dark room on your own? :p

THANK GOD they have the NY Times on it because I can't just go to any news stand in the entire US and buy one. What a useless device.

I take it you have some sort of better idea?

Its nice to tear things down, but from my experience so far the ipod touch is the best touchscreen experience you can get. So what exactly were you picturing?

It needs to have multi-tasking, I suppose they can still announce it. This isnt a phone, they have no excuse not to include it.

I was expecting the iPhone OS...but a modified version. This is the iPhone OS we use today on a 9.7" screen. Sure some apps have been modified to fit the bigger screen, but its essentially the same OS we have today.

Can someone explain why they'd opt to use this around the house as apposed to a macbook?

I cannot think of 1 single reason, other than it's likely to be cheaper, which doesn't even matter if you already have a macbook.

Good thing they didn't go to facebook.com because then people who were thinking about getting this thing would realize facebook on the iPad is just as worthless as facebook on the iPhone (good for catching up with people but you can't use the apps).

Um, yeah, many of us use Facebook to, you know, keep in touch with people, not for the goofy apps (Farmworld! YoYo Town! Mafia Wrestling Match!). I hate that annoying crap and wish Facebook didn't have it.

It seems the iPad really will be the new Newton.

I think the Newton is more compelling for business. Haven't mentioned pen interface or voice dictation. Nothing compelling. An iPhone is still more portable and less nerdy.

So far it's an epic fail for me, it looks like they've thought about it from the perspective of making money from the user. Not even considered what the user might want, is apple becoming Microsoft? Honestly this is by far one of the worst products I've ever seen Apple release. It's a non multi tasking giant iPod Touch

Utter junk

If you were hoping all this time for a scaled down version of a Macbook Pro at 1/4 the price, then you are a fool. Apple has said it is not interested in just shrinking a laptop and selling it cheap - Windows excels at that.

Maybe time you switch to Vista...

It was rather rude of them to show the iPod Touch and iPod Nano at the start of this thing. Gave me hope that they were planning on updating them too.

Since it's just an bigger iPod touch, which not get an iPod touch for cheaper, and have better portability as well?
The iPad is pretty much what I expected it to be. It's an extremely niche device though when you can get an iPod Touch or dare I say iPhone and get portability.

While I'm not fan of the PC slates it is running full blown Windows 7 so you get the entire x86 application library and you can treat it just like another computer with your existing network infrastructure.

Can the iPad access network shares?

Form factor.

I can't wait to have this have all my books and sitting on my lap/desk for note taking in class.
Get a notebook.

Maybe there is an iPad pro, with os x support, and what not. I mean, theres something suspicious when there is a huge dock, and it only holds 4 apps

Is all about the price guys, $399 for the 16 gig. No contract, nothing. Just $399.

And man, some of those rumors were off big time. Learning curve for using the UI?? What?

if anything this could be a sign of the future where TN gets phased out and IPS starts appearing in laptops, etc.
Ruahrc

That's BACK to the future! My 2001 Thinkpad is IPS. (It was a $5000 notebook...) My old Samsung SyncMasters (about same age) are IPS. IPS faded because other technologies had faster refresh rates, and everybody went into this refresh-rate war. Now IPS has fast refresh rates too.

Bet they go to OLED in the future, but it's just not ready yet. As noted by industry followers trying to sort out the rumors, there aren't the factories to produce enough OLED screens for the IPad right now.

So far a bit disappointed. A big iPod. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of interaction or applications. Won't it be a bit difficult to play games on this big a hand held device since you need both hands on the sides - and then the controls in the center of the screen, e.g. for FPS? Hmm.... And watching films on this - who wants to hold this in their hands watching a whole movie? You'll soon tire and wish it was standing on something. Oh well, if the price is low enough it is NICE and LOOKING good but... let's see. I think it'll be a slow and tough take-off for Apple, unless something turns up that you can't do on the iPod/iPhone.

EDIT: And e-reading... nobody (hardly) wants to read books like this. Maybe a couple of articles in a newspaper but I think Kindle etc with a more paper like display will be better and better on your eyes when using for a longer period.

I completely agree. So happy with my iPhone over this. I'd rather have something in my pocket if it will have the same features. Who's going to buy this thing?

I cannot think of 1 single reason, other than it's likely to be cheaper, which doesn't even matter if you already have a macbook.

I'm doing everything better than the iPad already on my MacBook and I'm sick in bed right now

If this thing is around $399, then yeah it'd be well-priced. It'd be essentially another model of the iPod touch which is fine.

But if they try to charge like $800-999, forget it.

I'd admit that I am a geek who loves experimenting with lots of new gadget, and Apple have been making lots of £££ from me over the years.

But I hate to admit this, I would definitely feel awkward being seen in public / at workplace using this "iPad".

In fact, I cannot imagine myself enjoying the iPad in the comfort of my own home for an hour or two. I would just head for my Mac Pro or iMac.

So where is the real use for this in real life? And I bet it's going to cost just as much as a MacBook.

Feeling underwhelmed by this overhyped tablet so far.

Well as long as YOU have a Macbook I guess we're all set!

Me? When my daughter is a little older and wants a laptop I'll be buying her something like this instead.

Unless you're, you know, willing to share your Macbook with her?

the only problem i have with portable devices is: BATERRY LIFE!

of course i hate my 3rd gen iTouch, it lasts a few hours with wifi and gaming...

iPad is not far. that screen tho great, eats lots of battery..

hold your horses guys, the second gen of iPad will be the one to drop your cash on.

in the meanwhile i would love a 9" Sipix ereader..
