This thing should have been released BEFORE the iPhone/iTouch. In fact, their release date should have been switched.

People would have been impressed with the iPad had it been released 3 years ago, and say by this year they reveal the iPhone - similar to iPad but in much smaller form, we will be impressed once again.

Now they are doing it backwards.

Come on Apple, we get that this thing can run 3rd party apps...we get that multitouch games can be cool...and we've seen this same demo at pretty much every single Apple event since the App Store was announced.

Can someone explain why they'd opt to use this around the house as apposed to a macbook?

I cannot think of 1 single reason, other than it's likely to be cheaper, which doesn't even matter if you already have a macbook.

Far lighter (a third of the weight even of the macbook), almost maintenance free, much simpler to use, a more enjoyable end user experience, want me to go on?

So far anyway I'm not sure this is a device I'll be picking up but I could really see it working very well indeed for my parents. A lot will depend on content creation, if there's anything to do that then it becomes worthwhile for me personally.

I don't really get it either. I guess if I travelled a whole bunch it could be nice.. but in general I can't toss it in my bag/coat and carry it everywhere like I can my iPhone.. and I can't use it in classes or to do any heavy typing/work or the like... so.. what the heck is it for??

So far it's an epic fail for me, it looks like they've thought about it from the perspective of making money from the user. Not even considered what the user might want, is apple becoming Microsoft? Honestly this is by far one of the worst products I've ever seen Apple release. It's a non multi tasking giant iPod Touch

Utter junk

But that's what Apple are brilliant at doing. The Apple TV, the iPods, the iPhones, they're all about locking you in and making a residual return from the consumer. What's completely baffling to me is that so many people expect something else. Apple is Sony pronounced differently. Simple as that - and I'm a fully-fledged Apple consumer.

very underwhelming

So far at least.

Relying on upscaling iphone apps
No flash support - presumably
Once again locking out divx - presumably.

They say netbooks aren't good at anything - I can't see how a 9.7" iphone is better than a netbook - which I already don't think is useful.

Hopefully I'm missing things - first view was very exciting - rest of the presentation was massively underwhelming afaik.

Perhaps I had really high hopes (keyboard/ext. monitor connectivity/Os X apps), but I'm really disappointed. The device could have sported much better and much more exciting features.

Big iPod Touch FTL.
:(

On the bright side, if there's no carrier associated with the iPad then that increases the chances all the Verizon rumors really did refer to the iPhone.

It's been what... 40 minutes since they brought out the iPad? I'm just waiting for the battery to give out.

hahaha!! Nah, I saw them swap the tablet out for a fresh one a few minutes ago.... when Job's was dancing in the corner to distract people.

If you were hoping all this time for a scaled down version of a Macbook Pro at 1/4 the price, then you are a fool. Apple has said it is not interested in just shrinking a laptop and selling it cheap - Windows excels at that.

Maybe time you switch to Vista...

Maybe it's time you raise your expectations and stop being a fanboy :) Steve was alleged to have said this is the most important thing he's done since returning to Apple, or some such. I don't see a large iPod touch as being that important. It will suck at games, and it doesn't multi task. It's not a great Apple device, and it's far from innovative. I just don't see it as being a game changer, oh and it's ugly as sin!

Try not to call others fools, you just make your self look lacking

OK, MLB's app looks *sick* ... but certainly not worth buying a whole new device!

camera??

Excuse me, I don't see a camera. The whole point of getting this besides the browsing is multiconnectivity...video chat with me mates across the pond. I don't see a camera on those pics.

I agree, YAWN - maybe there is nothing more to it?

MLB WTF?
