I think its a nice device for people considering an Ipod touch and don't care about cameras and stuff...

For me an Iphone 4.0 is more important because I dont read at all (except bulky Physics and Math Books) Music PHONE Internet

No Flash means there will be less Flash websites created by clueless graphic designers calling themselves webdesigners :)

Funny how everyone was saying it's horrible, but once they saw the price, they wanted one.

$500 is for the base model with ONLY 16GIGS!! If you want the model with 3G, it's almost $200 more, plus some money to ATT every month.

I think I'll save my money and buy two new iPhones in the summer.

Jekyll and Hyde i tell ya!

I'm still waiting for an iTouch with camera. Now that the "iPad" is cheaper than expected, i'm hoping the iTouch will drop to 99-199$

To tell you the truth i really have no need for it, i have an iPhone 3GS and a Mbp. Don't see anything i cannot do with the devices i already own.

Though i also would be tempted to waste money and buy an iPad, probably the cheapest model...

Well, the iPad isn't what I wanted it to be, but I had no delusions that it would be. But it met and exceeded my expectations. The price, no-contract data, battery life, and mobile iWork are all better than I expected. I don't see myself getting one yet, maybe in a few years. Now I'll patiently wait for notebook updates, which I don't expect to be announced here, but rather silently rolled out over the coming weeks.

It's a cool device, but the issue here is that it cannot multitask. The fact that I cant listen to music and work on Pages, or browse the web and get the latest email is a major blow. The potential for this as an apple product was huge, but they just made a giant iphone.

Price is too expensive for such a limited device.

I think something that is being overlooked is corporate buy-in.

I had Blackberry's for years, and was frustrated by the lack of apps. Apple creates the App ecosystem, and it satisfies all of my (and apparently millions of others') needs.

This fills a 'size gap'. Proven touch technology, good size to read material REGULARLY. Yes...I read websites in a pinch on my iPhone (no pun intended) but if major companies are going to cater to this device, it will continue to become more useful and popular.

My only request...let me tether this device with my iPhone and leverage my existing Cell contracts.

I see this being very useful to me. Perfect size for someone who works on a laptop daily (web developer....text editors are not processor intensive), kicks around on the couch with his machine, and reads news forums in bed at night. It's the perfect computing companion.

$499.

So for that much, the same price as a full blown PC laptop, I get a device that runs a crippled version of OS X and doesn't even have the hardware to do any networking other than WiFi.

What's my incentive?

I don't know if this will be a hit with consumers or not but I'm not interested in even the slightest. Maybe I'm not in the target demographic for this or perhaps this is one of the most pointless things Apple's ever put out. Either way, I admit that I don't get it. It seems to fit the WTF-do-you-do-with-it product everyone said it wouldn't be.

I'll buy this the first day it hits an Apple Store. I never wanted 3G on it in the first place, so this is better than I hoped. I'll be keeping my MBP and don't really see the two overlapping that much for the tasks that they individually are better at doing.

No thank you Apple...disappointed by this announcement! I wanted to see an actual Tablet device, not an iPod Touch on steroids!

For the most part that's what you got. What else did you want that apple didn't provide?

Is today April Fools Day? They can't possibly be serious with this.

What's next....eight different 'lickable' colors?!

Fails like Apple TV and the Cube.... too many bad points...plus AT&T....total fail.....no real innovations

starting at $499, what is Apple smoking, they must be doing some illegal ****, they're hiding some good weed...

bi*** please, if I wait for summer promotions I get a laptop for $899 plus a free ipod touch with education discount. I can get an iphone for $99 with 3g and still have to pay 30 a month for internet, which I can tether to my laptop. And my macbook has a keyboard, usb ports, firewire, amazing display, backlit key board, ability to have windows xp, vista, 7, mac os x snow leopard, multitasking, flash, and programs like photoshop cs4, garageband, plus it has camera, ichat..So many more things. Ipad is so ridiculous, would make sense for 200, but starting at 500, puh lease..

Oh come on, you're not serious? $200 is the same as the base 8Gb iPod Touch you know... you REALLY think you're going to get one of these for that money?

It's very simple, if you need a laptop with all the stuff you listed above BUY A F'N LAPTOP! Why is this so damn hard for people to grasp around here, not every product must fit your exact needs. However for those who don't need photoshop, who don't give a damn about flash, who have never fired up garageband in four years of owning a mac... this is possibly just about perfect.

Look, I'm a geek, I work with computers for a living and support OS X. But when I come home my laptop is mainly used for internet browsing, writing, e-mail, twitter and occasionaly watching a youtube video. For me the iPad may, just may, be a perfect replacement: lightweight, cheap (yes, it's cheap for an Apple machine, deal with it) and most of all FUN! I've been using computers since the days of the C64 and good god am I bored with them. Right now I tend to reach for my iPod Touch more than the 17" MBP when I'm at home, the iPad is a very very tempting deal and would meet my needs perfectly. If it doesn't meet yours, no problem, that's why there's a whole range of notebooks for you to pick form. But don't assume if it doesn't meet your needs then there's no market for it.
