The tablet looks cool, but whats with the massive ugly bezel? Just to make the screen look bigger when its turned off?

Looks like Apple finally made good on this old patent application, including the alien hands operating it:

What is wrong with the IPS screen and reading?

The eye strain compared to e-ink?

I was really hopeful for this but didn't see how on earth they'd make an e-book reader that was also a tablet and it turns out they haven't done.

Great for textbooks but it can't compete with any of the eink screens for reading.

I'd rather buy the Archos 9 PC Tablet priced at 499 euros.

It runs windows 7.. compaired to the iPad it just rocks more

My netbook cost £200. This $499 model is roughly £308, and then slap on VAT, etc (in all fairness I did purchase the netbook when VAT was 15%, not 17.5% like it is now).

The netbook has a proper keyboard and a 250GB hard drive. Could pay a bit more to get one with 3g built in and it would still be much cheaper.

The Netbook does NOT have a proper keyboard, it's cramped and difficult to type on.

I wanted to want the iPad. I just can't right now. $630 for the 16GB, $730 for the 32GB....it's just adding up way too quickly. For a device like this you'd want plenty of storage for your music, movies, photos, and documents. 16GB is not enough if Apple wants us to go nuts in the iTunes store.

Let's look at the key facts here

* iPhone OS
* No multitasking
* 16-64 gb
* not compatible with USB keyboards/mice
* $499 for 16gb and wifi only

This is about as useful as the Macbook Wheel.

I'm not sold on it.

I may be tempted to buy one, but since I have to wait 2-3 months, it will give me time to ponder. My MBP and iPhone appears to be more then enough.

I'm curious as to how this will be embraced by the consumer. Other tablet computers failed, and I see little that would cause people to flock to this device.

I'm with you there. I just can't really see myself using the iPad over my MBP or iPhone.

I am astonished the stock price is still holding ground.

Would have expected a big drop to 190 with this thing.....

I don't think anyone quite realised what this day would hold for Apple Inc.

WHo knew that Steve Jobs would bring a very special product to show and tell and the event this morning.

After his morning coffee, Steve Jobs went to the toilet and pinched out the biggest **** in the History of Man.

Did anyone think he would bring it along with him? And name it the iPad?!

I'm still waiting for the slate that everyone else is waiting for....

Another superfluous device ala Apple TV.

Good point. A few years I got suckered into the AppleTV with big hopes of future updates...I'm still waiting.

My old eyes suck so a big iPod Touch is somewhat appealing to me, but I can't see hauling this thing around. When I go out, my iPhone is perfect. Sitting at home I like my macbook with keyboard. iPad is a decent device on par with the Macbook Air. Cool, but not groundbreaking.

Pretty disapointed. Its basically just a giant iphone. Its not even that nice looking. It actually looks worse than the iphone. (I dont mean the iphone is ugly) That slide to unlock is pretty bad looking and the home screen is just an iphone home screen spread apart with a customizable background.

HOPEFULLY Apple uploads the event video onto their website so we can all see how it works exactly. Then maybe ill change my mind.

Although I have to say the price is really good, which is surprising. (But then again, if this tablet was something more like a real mac, it wouldn't start at $500)
