The 3G model has GPS built in.
 
Great! ...but...

Does anyone else find the keyboard dock just ....sad? That is so pathetic, and misses the cool factor by a mile.

I would have been blown away if they had showed it in a charging dock with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse sitting next to it. If that were the case it could replace most of what I do with my laptop 80% of the time.

That and a usb cable to sync ( a cable?? really? ) were the two major let downs to me.
 
after looking at the apple site, I think the ipad looks great, dislikes are, the home page, just looks, well plain, and no front camera, just daft would have made a perfect Skype machine for when im away from the kids, as i dont take a laptop away with me.

Take another look, it has the Mac Dock. It looks more like a mini Macintosh computer than it does an iPhone. The iPhone has the Dashboard Dock.
 
I'm a bit puzzled by this device as to when Steve expects me to use it.

I can think of:
a) Sitting in a car to play a movie? 500$ is a lot compared to an in-car DVD player
b) Sitting in airplane? they already have inflight entertainment and my ipod/iphone plays music
c) At home? I already have a Mac Mini or MBP and an ATV connected to my HDTV
d) At home on my couch reading a book? Maybe ... but buying the book is cheaper!
e) On vacation? we'll there's no phone so I have to bring my iphone anyway, sand .... no way?
f) At work? well we all have IT at work so I don't expect to switch to a 9.7" display

For me, beautiful product but it has all the defects of a netbook. iPhone remains unbeatable and it fits in my pocket. Not only did iPhone kill competition but it already killed iPad before it was born!

While I'm kinda 'meh' about it (not 'meh' enough to not buy one though, /swigs koolaid), this is the PERFECT device for someone like my wife who does most of her computing in bed or on the couch w/ a netbook.

Such a big disappointment!! This is just another argument for the people who talk about how Apple screws its customers! No camera, no really NEW software, no... this is just another iPhone 1G. They could've done SO MUCH MORE but instead they just want to hold back as much as they can from their customers, and save it for the next upgrade. This is crap. Makes me bitter against Apple!!
 
Well, it might be a let down in terms of what it turned out to be, but in terms of design, I think we're seeing some glimpses of what the next Iphone is going to look like. I have a feeling that aluminum back with the flattened sides is going to be the backing of the next Iphone, and there will be a black plastic strip like we see here - just like the first Iphone - hiding the antennas.
 
What a bunch of moronic cry babies!!! WTF were you thinking a portable computer was going to do???????????????????? It's a computer!! It does what computers do. Good lord I seriously can't believe the stupid responses to this device.

Big iPod Touch!!!!! Not interested---------USELESS for anything accept lining Apples pockets with money!!!!!!! Can't even upload pictures from my DSLR in the field and can't even add more memory!!!!! 64GB COME ON give me a break!!!!!! I love my Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro but this thing is way to expensive. For that kind of money I would just buy a 13 inch MacBook Pro!!!!!!!

as webcam for skype. i would love to be able to use it for skype on business trips because my work notebook is locked down and doesn't allow flash or skype or firefox.
 
Lots of nerd rage going on with this thing. Good thing you all are a tiny tiny percentage of the people out there.

For the average person, like my entire family who are not computer nerds, this will be a huge hit.

But it's been pretty entertaining reading all the nerd rage here and other forums. :D

Where can you buy a Macbook Pro for $499? Hell for $849?
 
I have to admit that the lack of a camera for video conferencing will hold me back from buying it.

I am pretty sure that Apple left the camera away in order to keep the partners calm. It doesn't have any phone capabilities, which would include also video conferencing of course...

Other than that the device is pretty awesome. But without a camera not interesting for me.

I'll wait and see what iPad 2.0 will bring... if it will have a camera I'll buy it immediately then...

I doubt it - seems too limited in what it can do for businesses, unless they already use Macs.

First, I think MacRumors did some fine digging around earlier, especially regarding the name iPad. Second, this device isn't for me but it isn't necessarily bad, either. It just means it wasn't aimed for people with my needs. Third, you gotta start somewhere. We will need to see how people respond to the product once it's in their hands. I see it as almost like a second car for most people or something rich people give to their kids. Lastly, I think people's expectations were way out of proportion with reality.
 
i'm sad there was nothing more, even with all the rumors the ipad has to be one of those products i wouldn't want for $99 on any carrier.

Yeah, major disappointment in that regard.

Apple seems alarmingly casual about the Android assault, and you can bet Microsoft will be showing off its iPhone OS knockoff in a couple of weeks.

And the lack of MacBook updates - well, maybe this wasn't the venue for it, but they should have announced updates prior. Where the heck are the iX processor MacBook Pros???

I convinced my mom over a month ago to hold off on buying an iPhone and a MacBook until after today, expecting updates to both. This will be a painful phone call to make...
