Leo Laporte is demoing an iPad on TWIT right now. He was a huge naysayer before but sounds like a kid in a candy store now. Says the screen is much more readable than the Kindle; better reader than the Kindle.

Not quite ready

hmmm, I am not that excited about it. It's just a big iPhone, I would rather see something as powerful as a Macbook Pro with a touch interface.

Though I know Snow Leopard would not work as a Touch OS, I was hoping to see a new OS that was a mix of Leopard and the iPhone OS.

I think I will wait a few years when it has matured into a full computer of the future.

I spend much of my day sitting around the courthouse waiting on other people. I could carry the iPad around with the rest of my files and have something to be productive on. It beats the iPhone in this respect due to iWork and better email and web. My MB is too much to carry, but the iPad won't add much bulk at all to what I already carry. I'll be getting one at some point.

The 4.0 OS might add functionality, too.

It has a compass, I am pretty sure it has GPS.

NO it doesn't. It only has assisted GPS which uses the cell carrier.
I'm bummed about that too. basically it is a larger 3rd gen Ipod Touch even to having no camera.
The complete specs are up now on apple.com

It's a cool device, but the issue here is that it cannot multitask. The fact that I cant listen to music and work on Pages, or browse the web and get the latest email is a major blow. The potential for this as an apple product was huge, but they just made a giant iphone.

My Archos 5ITA can do that.

I can now finally get my older parents a computer that isn't complicated or need personal support.
Great opportunity here for a 3rd party 'strap' you can put on your wrist while using it. Older people tend to drop things and you won't want to have to get them a new one every week after its been dropped and ruined.

Yeah when you get the 3G option. Gee I wonder ATT or Verizon may knock off $400 to may the 64GB to $230 or $330. I'm buying it's more useful than the iPod Touch, I say that! :D

Did you read that there would not be 3G contract. It means no subsidies.

false marketing

From the tech specs page on apple.com:

  • 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
  • 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)

To my knowledge, that is NOT A WIDESCREEN display.

Does anyone else find the keyboard dock just ....sad? That is so pathetic, and misses the cool factor by a mile.

I would have been blown away if they had showed it in a charging dock with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse sitting next to it. If that were the case it could replace most of what I do with my laptop 80% of the time.
All models have Bluetooth built-in. I'd be very surprised if a bluetooth keyboard wasn't an option. I doubt the mouse, though.

all the people who are bashing it...what else do you expect from a tablet?

It does what it's supposed to do..Its for people who travel a lot want something in between their laptops and iphone...i think its a good device...and well the A4 chip can be used in the next iphone

I see so many posts about it is "teh failz" for not having a camera. Just interested to know what you would use a camera on this for? I just think it would look goofy holding up one of these to take a pic. And doesn't everyone have a camera on their cellphone these days? Just curious...

I think most people mean a front-facing camera for video chatting - not a camera to take pictures/videos. Adding that would have slightly elevated this tank in my mind.

It's a big old pile of: meh.

Pros:
Size.
Battery Life.
Support of iPhone apps.
Resoution, Sync to iTunes

Cons:
it's an iphone not a computer
it's not better than a netbook
it's an iphone not a computer
it's more expensive than a netbook
it's an iphone.

Where's Flash support? I want to surf HULU while I use this thing. Why does it NOT do multitasking? HDMI out? Why does it look and feel EXACTLY like an iphone.

That's my biggest problem. This has ZERO innovation. It's running the iphone os, with pretty much ZERO changes.

$399 and I might have bought one. But $500 for a jumbo-iphone? No thanks, I'll wait for Windows7 Tablets with a full OS later this year..

No camera? Bluetooth? Why not connect ipad with wireless keyboard? OS seems a bit thin..
There is Bluetooth.

Ha ha! A giant iTunes store!

It's so intimate, the way you can look at stuff, and then buy it! Then you can look at it some more!

I mean really, that's the best you've got? The next time Steve talks about the best thing ever, people aren't going to take him so seriously.

Lots of nerd rage going on with this thing. Good thing you all are a tiny tiny percentage of the people out there.

For the average person, like my entire family who are not computer nerds, this will be a huge hit.

But it's been pretty entertaining reading all the nerd rage here and other forums. :D

Yea pretty much. This will be massive. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Some of you people are so short-sighted and negative. Sure, the price of the complete 3G 64GB with a stand is more then a lot of PC laptops. The problem a lot of you haters are missing out on is that more and more people don't like computers. A couple of friends and I ran a computer on call repair business for a short time and I hated I still get asked all the time can I fix this or what should I get because I only want to do this. The average computer user doesn't understand all these choices much less a windows interface. Go on dell.com and configure a laptop. I just did that for my gf 3 weeks ago. That's the worst experience ever. Average users don't understand hardware they want something that works. Most people just want to check email, youtube, the news, and ebay. Sure there are more but you get the point. This device is for them (and ME). Sure I want the 27" iMac on the desk but 95% of the time I'm lounging around with the iPhone checking stuff out. My laptop collects dust. Sure it's a somewhat of a large Touch but that's what I want. I don't need Adobe Creative Suite when I'm on the train, or sitting around watching TV. I want FLash on my this and my iPhone like the rest of you, but some you just don't get what the majority of people will think of this once they see it in use.

+1

I 100% agree with you. This device probably is not for me, but there is definitely a market for it. In fact, I'll be trying to convince my Mum to get this.

I don't understand what there is to bitch about here.. Look at it from the media ebook standpoint. $489 buys me a kindle dx... for 10 bucks more i get an iPad... How is that a bad deal??

and how many people have you seen sportin' a kindle? i haven't seen ONE person using them yet. how are you going to type on this thing and use it as a computer? apple is reaching for sure on this device. pure waste of time.

Why are people comparing it to a high spec laptop.

Remember this..

This tablet is to compete against the PC netbooks and i think it does a great job. If i was to buy a netbook i'd buy one of these.. but id never buy a netbook id buy a mac laptop.

When comparing it compare it to the netbooks not high spec laptops and you will see its genius.

EDIT: Whoever said it doesnt have Java is an idiot.. or course its going to have java.

I think part of what's missing is that a netbook essentially has a full OS on it (you can get the mobile Ubuntu that is more like iPhone OS in a way too) and expandability, a camera and a USB port wouldn't be to hard or costly to integrate or have be custom options.

The Bluetooth is almost useless if it can only be used in similar ways as the iPhone/iPod Touch
