Embarrassed...

Because Apple is into "industrial design" lately. It's all steel and glass. Having a plastic part would be an embarrassment. Well, they got embarrassed anyways.

Small potatoes. None of this has remotely hurt the sales of Apple products.

Wrong.

Apart from Job's idiotic initial email, this will be taught as a masterclass in the future. I've already explained upthread.

As a PR professional for over 20 years I can assure you - this WILL be a case study. But not on how effective the crisis management was handled. But rather the opposite.

That idiotic email, by the way was to me. You're forgetting that in the middle of one hoopla, Apple tried to smokescreen the public with an entirely different "issue" with the letter about signal strength reporting.

Apple has never been so transparent in their spin before. It's rather surprising. The PR wheels are spinning - but the general public isn't buying into it like they normally would. They just aren't.

And now (legitimately) the white iPhone is delayed which is ticking off more customers who have been waiting.

I have no doubt Apple will be very successful and not be dramatically challenged by this.

But the real test will come with the next gen iPhone. And whether or not this launch and set of issues has an effect on pre-sales and initial sales.

Time will tell. And only time. Not "predictions" or conjecture.

Uh..what?

They just upped the definition of broadband to 4mbs. Thats "upped", you can't get away with less being called broadband anymore.

It's no huge step, but the FCC isn't whats keeping this country from advancing our connectivity.

Well what is then? Corperations? Carriers? I doubt it... Competition is so high that they should be trying to be the fastest connection available.

I don't see how defining what broadband is makes them "good". It doesn't make our connections any better or faster or allow more cellular frequencies to be used. Why is our country so far behind in cellular performance?

And?

"Verizon Wireless and Motorola are aware of a very small number of DROID X units that have experienced a flickering or banding display. Motorola has resolved the issue and is continuing to ship the phones. Any consumer who experiences a flickering or banding display should contact a Motorola customer support center or Verizon Wireless." - Engadget

Thank you Motorola for acknowledging and fixing the problem so quickly!

That quote sounds an awful lot like Apple's reply, and the small number of issues reported with the iP4.

Are you forgiving one and not the other?

What I never understood was if the bumper fixed the problem why didn't they build the bumper into the phone?

Because this is more a perceived problem trumped up by the bloggers rather than a real problem. As Steve pointed out, the number of complaints from actual customers, not bloggers, was very tiny. However, to soothe the PR problem, not the engineering problem, they decided to give out free bumpers.

If folks hadn't given Apple a hard time about the death grip, I'd have said Apple is being petty. But in reality the non-iPhone folks should not have thrown stones from their glass houses. Truth hurts sometimes....

In the end though the industry as a whole needs to solve this problem......

Who says that I'm not forgiving Apple for their problems? With the antenna issue... Apple said that it's not a problem.

Some of the mindless people here who say, "OKAY APPLE WE GOT IT, STOP BEING PETTY, YADA YADA YADA...", TBH, you guys here are the very ones who created this disaster forcing Apple to come to their defense and do desperate tactics for damage control. As soon as one person brings up an issue here, the domino effect begins and the crap just snowballs. Some of the mindless people here just love misery and love complaining and love problems and they can't stand to hear good news coming from Apple.

I notice a lot of the Droid Dumbasses here are ignoring the current screen problems with the Droid X, they like to keep that quiet so the don't make Google/Motorola look bad and cause them to do desperate damage control like Apple. :p

is that like apple shipping iphone 4's with yellow blotches because the glue is not dry?

or what about the proximity sensor which was documented to be a show stopper for the original iphone, but since apple has sold 50 million or so iphones they let it go with the 4.

And thank you so much for putting out the news for us, Fandroid!

iPhone 4 > Droid X. End of discussion.

But I may end up switching to Droid X due to wifey recently getting pissed off @ white iPhone 4 delay.

Apple. Broom. Take out.

I own a Droid X and my phone doesn't drop calls. Good luck with those white iphones haha. suckers

Ok, call it folks, this match is over. One person has a Droid X and it DOESN'T drop calls.

Contrary to what you may read around here, a VAST majority of iphone 4's don't drop calls, either. My 3GS did ALL THE TIME, but my iphone 4 has dropped 0 calls in 3 weeks.

You and I are two satisfied customers. Our experiences, however, don't make for good interviews or youtube videos.

And thank you so much for putting out the news for us, Fandroid!

You're welcome. :) I'm here to just clear any misinformation. You accuse us of ignoring it, and we're here to tell you that we know of the issue.

Please show a video of any other cell phone on the planet that will go from full signal to nothing, actually, scratch that... Please show a video of any other cell phone on the planet that will lose bars by merely touching it in a certain spot that you would touch in normal use.

For the umpteenth time... this is not a "Death Grip" issue or even a grip issue. It happens on the IP4 during normal RIGHT HANDED use in certain coverage locations. You touch that tiny spot, in any way, you compromise the reception. That's not normal, no other phone does that.

ash =o)

Okey Dokey

You came all this way to post that?

I actually purchased an iPad. I like Apple products and gadgets. I own an iPad and an iPod Touch. I was pondering about purchasing a Macbook Pro also, but decided not to.

I don't choose between Apple and everyone else. If there's a gadget that I like, I'll buy it. You can call me technologically bisexual.

Seems legitimate to me. Apple gets beat over the head and shoulders because their phone drops a few bars if you grip it tightly. So now they show that this effect is not unique to Apple. I'd call it educating the media.

At least they didn't mention how the screens are failing on the DroidX. Will there be a recall for that?

apple got what it deserved after spreading the same FUD about Vista. all the advertising that "it just works" and the Mac vs PC ads. and someone actually let Steve Jobs go in front of people and admit that they are fallible. it just opened the flood gates and apple doesn't know how to defend themselves except with these stupid no sound videos.

at least the Mac vs PC ads were funny

Glad to know that you're acknowledging that you're a Fandroid on a forum that discusses Apple products and that product in question being the iPhone 4. Must be boring over the Droid X forum since they haven't sold 3 million in less than 30 days and they don't have hundreds of people in every country waiting in line for it. ;)

So if you hold a phone like a retard/grip it tightly (very unnatural) it loses a few bars, and keeps the call. Place a metal object to bridge the lower left side of an iPhone 4, or touch it lightly with your finger, or even holding iPhone 4 normaly drops the call, and displays "Searching"

Can someone explain how those are the same?:confused:

According to your sig that toots your electronics, you don't own an iPhone 4. Just another person bitchin' about something that doesn't even affect them as they don't even own the phone.

What is Apple trying to show? The iPhone 4 has the same bad signal issues other phones have? This is not a typical Apple move -- they usually showcase the positives of their own products.

Don't get me wrong; I love my iPhone 4. I just want Apple to move on and keep highlighting the positives.

-Aaron-

What are you trying to prove?

Is it ok for every one to take on apple, but it is not ok for apple to return the favor ?

So we have half the posters here saying everyone gets it and Apple is wasting their time demonstrating it in videos.

Then we have the other half who deny that the issue exists in other smartphones, even after seeing the videos.

Very few of the people posting seem to care about observation and facts. This is a problem in the whole industry. Apple is pointing that out because so many people are saying it's just Apple. In fact, iPhone 4 has a great antenna in the sense that reception even when "holding it wrong" is better than most others:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review/2

That it's not just minor or obscure grip issues on other phones can be seen by all the cell phone manuals warning users about how NOT to hold their phones:
http://www.techbitts.com/2010/07/collection-of-dont-hold-it-wrong-cell.html

smartphones are growing and becoming one of the most profitable businesses in the world. The iphone 4 works fine as does the droid x. Its just a bunch of childish people being feed by the industry a bunch of crap.

Wow this is really weird.....To make a long story short I had a doctors apointment today, and my doc had the iphone 4.....him and I got to talking about it and he had said his assistant had the new droid x.....when we got back out into the waiting room he tried the death grip on his droid x and no bars dropped, then my doc and I both tried it on our iphones and sure enough lol ours within seconds dropped to searching......we all got a good chuckle.......at least we get free cases to make our phones work like a phone....this just goes to show you that apple is truly trying to hard to cover it up at this point.....very disapointing.....:(

Perhaps you should know, as I previously stated before, I do own an iPod Touch and iPad. I love them as much as I love my Droid X. Apple makes fantastic, high quality products. I'm not some blind follower. From last time I checked, this thread is about the Droid X. Am I missing something?

Also, I'd much rather have a phone that isn't all the rage amongst preteens. :p

Not that I disagree with you, but quoting sales number isn't always the best sign of a good product. Walmart sells a lot of crap, but I wouldn't call it quality, same for McDonalds
