I could see the 3rd gen iPad getting a double display. It's probably to expensive given they would have to ramp up production soon.

HERE'S TO HOLDING OUT UNTIL THE 3rd GENERATION!

It's usually the 3rd generation that gets all of the cool stuff anyway.

It's going to be hard for Apple to sell 2G iPads to iPhone 4 owners. We are accustomed to that great screen...

stop for a second people...

tell me what advantages would the increased resolution give you?

absolute nothing.

increased zoom in required for reading? YAY

pixelizated 1080p movies? YAY

old apps get fuzzy? YAY

wait no that won't happen.. because of the double retina display! durrr

You're not alone.

Fun Fact: The iPad's pixels per inch is higher than a 2009 iMac's screen.

So, you know, sometimes there's a disconnect between "what's good" and "what's the newest thing available." Sometimes they're not the same thing.

Yes, I'd like a higher-rez iPad screen. I really really would. But sometimes 'good enough' is good enough. Certainly when you're trying to hit a $499 price point on a device that everyone thought was gonna cost $999 last year. Remember that? Remember how shocked we were by the price? That comes with compromises.

What you're missing, is human nature. It doesn't matter if a given product is 100% perfect for our needs, if there's a newer, shinier product available, we have to have it. It doesn't even have to be better, but "iPad 2011" just is cooler than "iPad 2010". Or even a new colour. White is the new Black. Pink is the new White. Translucent is the new Pink! :p

If Apple wants us to read newspapers and magazines on the iPad they're really going to have to up the screen resolution. Also, unless they significantly upgrade the displays I'm not going to be buying an iPad...I'll just stick with my Macbook Air.

Improved display would be nice but far from being required or necessary. This is something that got hyped up by the tech blogs, but the current iPad has a solid display - I don't have any problems reading books or newspapers on the current iPad, I don't hold the iPad as close to my nose as I do with the iPhone and I don't feel that I miss anything.

Wow, I knew the news was too good to be true (if this report turns out to be true).
You can say that the increased resolution doesn't matter but as an iPad1 owner, it would take something like that to get me to buy on day one.

a 1megapixel camera and a SD slot ain't gonna cut the mustard for me.

I don't have the an iPad but I plan on getting the iPad 2. You know why? Because if I really really want to get iPad 3, I just sell iPad 2. I've been doing it this way for the last 3 years with the iPhone, and each one has payed for the next :D

Apple devices hold their value for quite some time. If you really want to upgrade, just sell the old one.

If I really want an iPad and can't wait until next year, I'll just get a gen 1 on the cheap. iPad 2 just doesn't seem worth it. I'd rather have the money saved for iPad 3.

If they skimp on it, then its iPad 3 for me. Without a headliner feature like this display, Apple Consumer Electronics better have some other magic to get people to buy.

Come one apple give us magic, retina on the ipad you can do it! If the current resolution stays the only thing to prevent my disappointment is a usb slot!

I'm not missing that, I fully agree that there will be people out there who won't buy an iPad 2 for this reason.

I'm just saying, in terms of "pick it up and play with it," the iPad 2 will still look nice to a lot of people in those Apple stores.

I sure want a 2x display on an iPad, but I honestly don't think they'll have trouble selling them for another year with the same display.

There are some things that need to be upgraded (I think the iPod Touch 2 would have failed without tha built-in speaker) but I don't think this is one of those things.

Guess it'll be iPad 3 for me instead...might go for a webOS tablet in the interim if significantly cheaper.

Gosh, these rumours are getting very tiring...
I love the current iPad and I really only wish for more power under that screen, whatever number of pixels it should have. To all those getting upset or annoyed, well, don't be...there are more important things in the world. If the iPad serves your purpose, then use it and relax.
I do have wishes of my own though...I wish there was an improvement on the screen for the iPad2, currently Safari is really the only time I notice the screen is not as good as my iPhone4, esp when zooming in on web pages. More important is a gyroscope, 2 cameras and a faster processor.
PERHAPS,,,just by optically laminating the screen similar to iPhone4 will result in a screen with less light refraction make reading easier in bright conditions..this would be a welcome update. I hate the fact the current screen seems sunken when viewed from a certain angle.
iPad 1 is the iPhone 1 of today....SO, with any luck the new one will be a 3G style update, and that was pretty good back then....
Anyway, not long now to wait I guess!

No kids  think like that, adults or at least the ones I know look to see if it meets their needs and move on to other things like car horsepower ;). But hey millage my vary with what crowd you hang with. :)

I guess my Kindle gets another year as my primary e-book reader. One can only hope this rumor is a ploy to keep the current iPad sales from getting cannibalized by iPad2 rumors.

It's Called "Milking A Good Thing..."

If the iPad is selling like hotcakes any "update" should be minimal so as to keep the "good stuff" for later to stoke the fire after sales start to fall off.

All companies will ride a successful product for as long as possible with as few changes as possible...

Hmm, I think its more so they have another reason to make you buy the third iPad. It doesn't surprise me that Apple plans this far ahead - they don't play all their cards at once. That's why the current iPad is so "basic" in hardware - it sold really well regardless, as will iPad 2 for those people holding out for better specs and a camera.

One of those stupid arguments put out by Apple haters ... they put in what is reasonable at the target price ensuring that they make tons of profit. Sure they could add lots of features, but if they keep the price it would decrease profit, if they increase the price, they would probably sell less.

I have the iPhone4 and love the display. I have the iPad1 and love the display - yes not as good as iPhone4, but still great and perfect for gaming, browsing and reading. I will probably buy the iPad2 no matter if it has a so called Retina display or not.

Guess it'll be iPad 3 for me instead...might go for a webOS tablet in the interim if significantly cheaper.

Maybe you should wait for the iPad9 ... or yes, go with some other cheap stuff.

Hah, probably not. Although the Retina display rumours probably won't help, I don't think they'll hurt too much either.

I am amused (or bemused?) by some comments I read on this site about specs - like 'after having used a Retina display for several months, the 3GS is basically unusable'. Unusable? Really?

Oh my Apple. I hear the fail train coming.

This had to have a better screen. This isn't iPad 2. Its iPad 1.5.

Magazines look awesome on the iPad, and you really don't need higher resolution. You might want it, but you don't need it.

You know, I still don't get why people focus so much on the screen.

I would never have bought my iphone 4 for the screen alone. IN fact, the screen was a nice extra and not even what came into play on why I decided to buy it (think better camera, better GPS, faster chip <- I had a 3G before).

I just don't get why the screen is the most important part to some people. Especially when the screen is already pretty nice (I don't have an ipad but one of the things that stood out to me when I see them in the store is the nice screen. And I was pretty happy with the iphone 3G's screen. Even now after having the 4 since it came out, looking at a 3G it's not as good but it certainly isn't undealable with). I could see if the screen was bad and it needed it, but the screen is nice as is. So I think it's really silly people are already deciding the ipad 2 is going to not be worth it judged on one rumor saying the screen won't get better until ipad 3 (with no other idea of what the ipad 2 will have). There are other things the ipad 2 could add or improve on to make it worth it. And really, to me a nicer screen would just be the cherry on top, not the main reason to get it.

I dunno, it just seems that the people whining that they aren't going to get the 2 just because it doesn't have the exact screen they want (without knowing anything else about the ipad 2) come off as a tad spoiled.

And no, I'm not some huge fan of the ipad. I don't have one, I don't want one, I see no use for it for me (If I'm going to have to lug something other than my purse to carry the device I'll just lug my MBP which I'd prefer using over an ipad anyways).

This is freakin' retarded.

Anyone with some common sense knew this would not be in the iPad 2, but the media kept saying it.

I don't even want it in the iPad 3. I'd rather have 20hrs of battery than a monster, power sucking hi-res monitor.

I'm amazed at the amount of people suddenly putting off their purchase of the iPad 2 for the iPad 3, when in reality neither product has been officially announced! Calm down and take it easy.

Please let it be the iPad 2. Lower screen rez is a deal breaker for me.

I guess I can pick up a cheap first gen on the forum here anyways to bide the time!
