Magazines look awesome on the iPad, and you really don't need higher resolution.

Only if you hold the screen about 3 feet from your face and bump up the font size. I see the individual pixels in the text at a more typical 18" reading distance.

Oh my Apple. I hear the fail train coming.

This had to have a better screen. This isn't iPad 2. Its iPad 1.5.

Were you one of those who predicted a fail for the first iPad?

Based on what do you think the iPad2 will be a failure? The iPad1 is still selling good despite its 'so outdated' display. iPad2 will sell like hell, no matter how many MP the camera has or if the resolution is getting bumped up or not. Did you make a market survey or user study on which you proof your fail assumption - or is it just you thinking too loud? (You know, if you don't want it doesn't mean nobody else wants it)

If true this is really going to cut into sales of iPad 2. There would be very little reason to upgrade. I personally won't upgrade if they don't include a better screen. Sure, the dual core A5 would be nice but that alone isn't enough. The SD card slot doesn't do anything for me since my new camera only uses CF cards. Don't need the front facing camera or rear facing.

I'll be waiting for iPad 3 now too. I didn't get the iPad originally BECAUSE the resolution was unimpressive. I don't care about these stupid front and back camera's, I want a high res screen!

2048 x 1536 = 3,145,728

PI ~= 3.141592 --> 3,141,592

3,145,728 - 3,141,592 = 4136

www.4136.com is some Asian website.

Therefore, I predict the iPad 2, or 3, will be manufactured somewhere in Asia.

I just want to say that this is amazing

If the iPad 2 doesn't have the retina display, then maybe the chance for it to have a better than 1MP camera is higher? I honestly think it will have the same camera as the iPhone 4.

Plural of this: "these"

Seriously, a relative of mine (who cannot stand Apple because of the way everything is locked down, secretive, and limited with the company) made a good point. Apple hypes up their products when in fact they are playing catch-up with current technology. I mean, look at the rumored camera on the iPad2. Yes, it should have a camera this time around. It should have had a camera LAST YEAR. But now we are getting reports of just a 1MB camera. Seriously, there are good things about Apple, but with them holding back on certain technology pieces just so they can do it NEXT YEAR is getting a little bit freaking old. Another example is the iPod Touch, in which they just had a camera put in the last model when we expected it back in 2009.

Apple isn't playing catch up with anything! They are fully aware of existing technologies and even pioneer their own.

Unless you are in their meetings you don't know what they decide to introduce when , if ever.

As somebody else posted they put it all together so it works.

A responsible approach to new technology is to test it. Not every new technology fits for every item.

Let's just say the ipad has been a game changer (Apple again) and big success .

Great products are not based on what people SAY they would like, it's what they BUY!

65 million LCD screens, 10 billion downloads later somebody must be BUYing their "hyped" stuff that just works.

As for secretive: Why would anybody be dumb enough to release all their plans, so the competition can copy them faster?

Killer Feature

Makes sense, but is dissapointing to me. May be looking into the Toshiba tablet instead unless Apple has some killer feature to unleash.

I think the killer feature is Apple itself, something no other company has yet to duplicate.

I hope this rumor is wrong

I really want to get an iPad 2. I really don't want to wait for iPad 3. Decisions, decisions.

So many ready to BUY or NOT BUY. Or make silly statements like "I'm waiting for iPad 3!" LOL!

Guys.... why not wait until the REAL specs are announced before getting so wound up?

These are JUST RUMORS by people who HAVE NO IDEA just like the rest of us. There's only a handful of people who know the real deal and they aren't talking.

Anyway... with that said... I'm waiting for iPad 6. :p

Oh my god who cares? Either way the screen will be nice! Lol

Do you have an iPhone 4??? Have you looked at the iPad display after using an iPhone 4 for a while? HUGE difference! Like Steve said, once you go Retina you never wanna go back! It's true!

This rumor makes sense and it is what I have been saying for a while. But I would LOVE a Retina display in this one. I have been waiting since the first one to get it and I will be a bit disappointed if this one doesn't have the Retina display! :(

And the other Tablet option out there with a 2048 x 1536 screen ?

Cracks me up that most people post here from their home monitors without that type of pixel density, but "oh no, I'm never buying a tablet with such horrible density as 132 PPI" While they type from a typical monitor density of around 110 PPI. The MacBooks are all the same or lesser density as the current iPad also.

And EVERYONE wants the iPad to be cheap. How does everyone think the iPad would stay affordable for a mass market when it would have, by far, the highest PPI density of any piece of glass on the market larger than about 4 1/2 inches? It's great they are likely working on it. But the processors, battery life and cost of the glass at this stage would price it out of the market.

Here is a good link for PPI comparisons.

But they are playing catch up in terms of technology. Maybe not in software, but the other tablets sure do give a better bang for the buck for what you get.

Unless iPad 2 has:
-Higher res screen
-Front and back cameras above 2mp
-1GB ram
-much faster processor
-much faster graphics processor
-barometer
-gyroscope

Then they will be behind. Besides iPhone, Apple has pretty much always been behind in order to make sure the next gen has features to add.

EDIT: and SD card slot.

Step 1: Release Beta ipad sell millions and profit
Step 2: Release ipad 2 with slight revisions sell millions to beta testers and profit
Step 3: Release ipad 3 with slight revisions sell millions to who bought the ipad 2 and the first ipad and make millions more
Step 4:.....

Wow, you're right. They totally need to make the perfect device the first time and never alter it.

Apple has a giant profit margin on the iPad. They can definitely afford to lessen it by adding some more features. My laptop screen is 132 ppi and I'm about 2 feet away from it and I wish it had more ppi, and I know that I'm going to be holding the iPad much closer to my face.

The low res screen on the original iPad is its only gaping weak point imho.

Okay, maybe this is because I don't actually own an iPad and have only used those belonging to friends, but I really don't see a problem with the screen.

I don't see any pixels, and I find the screen great for surfing and all that. I just don't see how doubling the pixels would benefit me in any real way.

This is just me, and it's clear that not everyone (most) don't agree with me but that's been my experience. I'm more excited about processor/ram/built in usb/sd card reader upgrades than the screen.

I would feel exactly the same way if it weren't for the iPhone 4. When I first got my iPhone 4 I didn't really see what all the fuss was about… until I looked at other screens and they look like they were blurred in comparison - like the screen had got smudges on it or something.

That's why I'll be waiting for version 3. You get used to the iPhone 4.

Which currently shipping iPad competitor is the iPad 1 behind, tech-wise?
