Leave it to Apple to disappoint.
I'm always brought back to the reality that the next iPad will probably be no great leap in hardware. Yeah, cameras, speaker, a few small jigs, some more memory, but it will probably be less that stunning. iPad 3 will most likely be a nice jump and iPad 4 or 5 will probably be a huge step forward to something truly joining mobile and desktop together.

2048 x 1536 = 3,145,728

PI ~= 3.141592 --> 3,141,592

3,145,728 - 3,141,592 = 4136

www.4136.com is some Asian website.

Therefore, I predict the iPad 2, or 3, will be manufactured somewhere in Asia.

THIS IS INSANE!
WHO WOULD EVEN THINK OF POSTING SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!?

....therefor it must be true.
Astounding!

Step 1: Release Beta ipad sell millions and profit
Step 2: Release ipad 2 with slight revisions sell millions to beta testers and profit
Step 3: Release ipad 3 with slight revisions sell millions to who bought the ipad 2 and the first ipad and make millions more
Step 4:.....

Looks like this system is working well for Apple

Just remember, we're on Apple's time. It's their agenda. Whether you have a problem with that, it doesn't make a difference. They will survive and they will prosper.

They will get my money, like they always do. It will just happen to be next year instead of this year. And life goes on...

Maybe stupid question, but seems that computers can multiply x1.4 as fast as multiply by x2.0 to generate scaled images...

I know there are issues with some "dithering type issues if it is not perfect multiple of pixels" but, really??? Am I missing something. I think scalings software (or hardware) can handle all resolutions pretty well...

Tom Mainelli (IDC analyst), "I don't believe anybody is ready to produce that resolution in volumes at this point. And Apple is going to require huge volumes for the iPad 2..."

What a surprise ... John Gruber says it ain't coming this year and everyone starts singing a new tune.
Actually, when this rumor first broke I opined here on MacRumors with comments that anticipated both what John Gruber wrote and this most recent report from IDC analyst Tom Mainelli. So, I suspect that these analysts have just been reading my posts here on MacRumors. ;)

As for this most recent report, look what I wrote nine days ago:

...I suspect that the iPad 2 will stick with today's 1024x768 display simply because that's good enough in comparison to the competition (i.e. CES 2011 didn't show any mega-resolution tablets). Besides that, Apple needs millions, and millions, and millions of displays for the next iPad and I can't see them taking a supply risk by going to a new, more difficult to manufacture, and vastly more expensive part.

The images that were included in the iBook software could be meaningless. The engineer may have just been preparing for the possibility of a higher-resolution and needing to select some value s/he picked 2X because it was a convenient value (since scaling down from a higher resolution image is generally preferred over scaling up, so 2X would cover all possibilities)...

And, here is what Gruber said three days after my post:
...I believe the iPad 2’s display will remain at 1024 × 768...But so what’s the deal with those double-resolution UI graphics in iBooks? I don’t know, but my guess is that it’s just the work of a UI designer thinking ahead...

Coincidence, I don't know? But it does show that these so-called experts and industry analysts really don't know anything more than we do. Well, that's not exactly true, they don't know any more than some of us. :)

Wow. I just copied a random piece of text from that page and ran it through Google translate: "We get married, OK". How the heck did they know I was going to select just that piece of text. Weird... Oh, and the answer is "Yes!" :p

I think there's just one inescapable conclusion: The next iPad will be round. The iPi. (iPie? Not sure..)

Yeah lets make predictions for 2015!

Now that we have said impossible things let´s say is for the one after the next one ...

The future will be better tomorrow ;)

Lets stop all the whining. Apple is worried about cost and manufacturers's abilities to produce enough retina screens to meet the demands. Apple justminvested 4 billion dollars. This has to be the screen. They are preparing for next version. Yea. They are humans too and they need time as well.

Apple has a giant profit margin on the iPad. They can definitely afford to lessen it by adding some more features. My laptop screen is 132 ppi and I'm about 2 feet away from it and I wish it had more ppi, and I know that I'm going to be holding the iPad much closer to my face.

The low res screen on the original iPad is its only gaping weak point imho.

Well, it is cool that you have a grasp on the final profits an the iPad. Most of us aren't fortunate enough to see those numbers. I personally have always been curious how much it cost to develop the product, build the factory(s), pay the manufacturing employees, market the product, distribute it, (insert long list of other expenses here) and of course use remaining net profits to pay all employees of Apple. I've always wondered what the final bottom line was. Please share.

Additionally, while the density is somewhat higher on the Galaxy Tab at 614,400, the iPad still has 28% more pixels at 786,432. So it would be hard for people to say the iPad is the looser in Tablet screen quality.

I will wait for iPad3 then....

As I have been waiting for a reasonable decent iPhone as well.

Apple always releases crappy versions of their products until "for mistake" they release the perfect product with every single feature finally!

For example:
-PowerMac 9600: In mid 90's Apple came up with this computer, 6 PCI ports, dual 230Mhz processor, 12 ram slots (up to 1GB of ram.

-Powerbook Pismo G3 500 (Pismo): Dual USB, dual Firewire, audio in/out, VGA out, S-video out, easy to open for the user to replace ram and hard drive, not to mention 2 slots for bateries.

-Powerbook 12" last gerenation: G4 500, with every single hardware feature as well, I had 3 of them and 2 still working and one got stolen.

-Mac Pro 2x2.8 Quad-Core: It has firewire 400 and 800 and fully upgredable for what ever you need.

-The actual 17" top of the line iMac is a beauty! Is the iMac to have.

For the rest of the products Apple is not offering a good deal, those are revisions that won't last with "whislist" features. I rather have the perfect iPhone/ iPad and I can wait just fine until Apple deliver it.

so ipad 2 will be/have:

thinner
lighter
facetime camera
back camera
512mb ram or 1gb
dual core cpu
dual GPU
gyro
bigger speaker
ios 5
possible new port
verizon version

So it won't have double the resolution, but whose to say it won't have better resolution than it has now?

How can some of you not see the benefit of a high-res screen?? In case you haven't noticed... THE WHOLE THING IS SCREEN.

For the iPad to be used fully the way Apple advertises... as a reader... it NEEDS a better screen. Yeah, maybe I'm spoiled by my iPhone screen... but guess what? It's the future. Pixels are the past. Even using my fairly new MacBook Pro is annoying because all I see is pixels. It's not as bad on here, because I'm further from it, with a keyboard and using it as a computer... but a tablet really is more about visuals.

To each their own.. but Apple WILL lose ground by going an entire year without a higher-res screen. There are going to be too many options out there. I will buy the iPad 2 the day it's out if it has a high-res screen. If not.. I won't buy it. And for those that cry about people waiting and waiting for later models.. well maybe the screen is the most important thing to us.

So the only things going for the new ipad are the cameras, SD slot, and better processor? Eh, doesn't seem too huge to upgrade. ipad 3 it is then.

You know, I still don't get why people focus so much on the screen.

I would never have bought my iphone 4 for the screen alone. IN fact, the screen was a nice extra and not even what came into play on why I decided to buy it (think better camera, better GPS, faster chip <- I had a 3G before).

I just don't get why the screen is the most important part to some people. Especially when the screen is already pretty nice (I don't have an ipad but one of the things that stood out to me when I see them in the store is the nice screen. And I was pretty happy with the iphone 3G's screen. Even now after having the 4 since it came out, looking at a 3G it's not as good but it certainly isn't undealable with). I could see if the screen was bad and it needed it, but the screen is nice as is. So I think it's really silly people are already deciding the ipad 2 is going to not be worth it judged on one rumor saying the screen won't get better until ipad 3 (with no other idea of what the ipad 2 will have). There are other things the ipad 2 could add or improve on to make it worth it. And really, to me a nicer screen would just be the cherry on top, not the main reason to get it.

I dunno, it just seems that the people whining that they aren't going to get the 2 just because it doesn't have the exact screen they want (without knowing anything else about the ipad 2) come off as a tad spoiled.

And no, I'm not some huge fan of the ipad. I don't have one, I don't want one, I see no use for it for me (If I'm going to have to lug something other than my purse to carry the device I'll just lug my MBP which I'd prefer using over an ipad anyways).

I think the main reason is because a lot ot people have gotten used the display of the iPhone 4 and would like the same quality on their iPads. For me it has become a pain looking at displays like the 3GS since i got my iPhone 4, although i don't really mind the screens on say HTC Desire as the pixel density is not that far from the iPhone 4.

And the screen is very important on this kind of device because it serves as the main input/output mechanism, the rest of the specs are important as well but only to the point where you are satisfied with how everything is displayed on the screen.

+1.

Do you have an iPhone 4??? Have you looked at the iPad display after using an iPhone 4 for a while? HUGE difference! Like Steve said, once you go Retina you never wanna go back! It's true!

This rumor makes sense and it is what I have been saying for a while. But I would LOVE a Retina display in this one. I have been waiting since the first one to get it and I will be a bit disappointed if this one doesn't have the Retina display! :(

As the man in black said: Get used to disappointment ;)

Oh... then you should have bought the 1st iPhone. It was more than "reasonably decent" at the time, in fact revolutionary. But if you want a great iPhone by today's standards... try the iPhone 4. What else do you want? Hyper Drive or Transporter?

Your logic makes no sense and your fist sentence was just funny.... I'd love to know what the heck you think is missing from the current iPhone that makes it so "substandard" for you that it does not even get a "reasonable" rating in your book.

I want the "Crap I can't believe I've missed out on a year of buying/using iPad 1" factor to HEAVILY, HEAVILY outweigh the "Wow look at these new features" factor.

Looks like this is a step in my direction.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I don't think it'll be a feature-for-a-fee kind of thing. The current chips simply don't support retina display for a screen that size. I am convinced however, that retina display will be offered most likely by gen3. Refardless, just as I waited until fourth gen iPhone to come to be, I will await iPad 4. I actually wish I had waited for iPhone 5, but iPhone 4 was so gorgeous. In terms of iPads, little doubt that the evolution of the iPhones will assure that iPad evolutions will be comparatively much more advanced. Bottom line... I will not buy iPads until they offer retina display. Will be first in line when made available.

Plural of this: "these"

Seriously, a relative of mine (who cannot stand Apple because of the way everything is locked down, secretive, and limited with the company) made a good point. Apple hypes up their products when in fact they are playing catch-up with current technology. I mean, look at the rumored camera on the iPad2. Yes, it should have a camera this time around. It should have had a camera LAST YEAR. But now we are getting reports of just a 1MB camera. Seriously, there are good things about Apple, but with them holding back on certain technology pieces just so they can do it NEXT YEAR is getting a little bit freaking old. Another example is the iPod Touch, in which they just had a camera put in the last model when we expected it back in 2009.

Did you remind your relative that when the iPad came out there was no competition, and only now one whole year on are other manufacturers even attempting to bring similar products to market? Apple made the tablet market when others were too ignorant to see the need. I year ago many people were saying that netbooks would rule the world. They're not saying the same thing now are they? Sounds like your relative has a whole load of prejudices and ignorance swilling around..my advice ignore it.

I'll be waiting for iPad 3 now.

Yep. Not buying one until the screen resolution is upped.

Didn't get iPad 1 and won't be getting iPad 2. It's iPad 3 for me. And the retina display is worth the wait.

I'll be waiting for iPad 3 now too. I didn't get the iPad originally BECAUSE the resolution was unimpressive. I don't care about these stupid front and back camera's, I want a high res screen!

Bummer for you guys. Looks like you'll be missing another year of portable computing bliss. :(

I love my iPad 1, will be getting iPad 2 and handing down the iPad 1 to the kids, a year later will get the iPad 3 and hand the iPad 2 down to the wife. My only regret with my iPad 1 is not getting it a launch but dragging my feet until August. It's definitely my favorite, most-used device now.
