The 'broken promises' is funny, interesting, works visually, great.

The other two, though, are seriously dated. The 'fake news' idea just reminds me of corny early 90s sitcoms. And 'teeter tottering' is too similar to what Apple have done before.

Not sure how much longer this whole 'I'm Mac... I'm PC' concept will last.

I am the IT dept, I have one other person but he works only when hes needed.

Even if I need to buy a $2 mouse I have to get written approval. I get about a budget of $5k per year plus more when its upgrade time. $5K isnt much for a growing law firm. I feel like im nagging my mum for a wolly pop.

So in the end you still have no control over the spending. I feel your pain, dude. I was in your shoes at my last gig.

The pain for us end users is no less intense. I'm trying to get a software upgrade to QuickTime 7.6 (which is free, of course) to view training content online that requires QT 7+. We currently have QT 6.x. It's going to be about a 6 month wait to get this request through the approval and testing process, and who knows how many man hours will be involved in making this happen.

Corporate IT is the mother of all bags of hurt.

I'd agree, if the i5 and i7 weren't only offered on the 24" iMac. If I want an i5, it means $2000 minimum, and if I want a i7, the only one Apple offers (the 860) is part of a $2200 system.

The iMac is great, but you can find i5s and i7s in <$800 PCs. So price/performance is still very much in the PC's favor.

The problem is dell has core i7 system for under 900 i think 799 and they have a core i5 for 699, so apple doesn't have a core i7 for under 2000 yet.

That's just ridiculously incompetent. I've worked for large companies too, and while yes, there is more red tape BS than there is in a company like mine (2000) it's just unacceptable for any company for you to have to wait 6 months for something as mundane as that.

They either need to higher more IT people and/or revise their policies/procedures.

I know, I know, I'm an armchair IT quarterback. :D

Yep.

Yep.

Sadly, it ain't gonna happen.

Self-employment is my ultimate goal - screw the IT dictatorship. It's absolutely the #1 thing I hate about my job.

Or.....Entourage. Seriously, why is this such an issue? It's not like Outlook comes with Windows. You have to buy that too if you wish to connect to Exchange.

At least with SL and Exchange 2007, you get something out of the box that works.
Well, Windows Mail can integrate into Exchange about as well as Mail does with SL. Both provide basic Exchange functionality.

And don't even bring up Entourage. I'd rather see people use Mail than Entourage when connecting to Exchange. Because of Exchange's heavy reliance on mapi, there hasn't been anything Mac-side that can compare to Outlook on the PC. Even Entourage 2008 EWS lacks support for public folders (unless they're on 2007, and even then the support is limited), while also preventing public folder management or DL management. Essentially Mail is as good as Entourage at this point.

Hopefully things will begin to change with Exchange 2010, since MS is making a big push to get away from mapi, and thus the new Outlook for Mac may actually be a really good client.

Some do.

Others won't touch an all-in-one regardless of the specs.

It's not a coincidence that none of the companies that offer the mini-tower alternative are selling tons of all-in-ones. Given the choice, consumers choose mini-towers over all-in-ones.

If Apple offered a Core i5/i7 mini-tower - their sales would shoot up, but Imac sales would suffer.

I'd buy a mini tower. ;)

Well, Windows Mail can integrate into Exchange about as well as Mail does with SL. Both provide basic Exchange functionality.

Not entirely accurate. With Mail (and Evolution) you don't have to have IMAP enabled, as they both work off of OWA. Windows Mail only does POP3/IMAP.

I have public folders on Entourage 2008. However the latter two points are correct, except that I can manage permissions on the folders as well.

Hopefully.

Me too. They way I see it, I want to be a developer, and work from my apartment in the beach.

I wouldn't mind staying 18h in front of my computer, hell, between work->school->home, I do that now.

I wanna test the waters of developing in house apps for companies. But I dont have a chance to do that yet.

That or my sister and I have some ideas for some games. I know some OpenGL. :D

Me too. They way I see it, I want to be a developer, and work from my apartment in the beach.

Yeah, if I had had an ounce of vision, I would have poured every waking moment into the iPhone SDK the minute it was announced and would be independently developing iPhone apps right now rather than working a crummy cubicle enterprise job using crummy Windows under an oppressive IT regime.

It seems MS's own advertising campaign has again backfired:

I don't understand how these ads are still airing. There is absolutely nothing factual in them, they are just making BS up and some of its sticking because people are too ignorant to actually do some research.

I am running a windows 7 pc. Built it myself, in about a half hour (never built a PC before). I built it 6 months ago and have been running the windows 7 RC since. How many blue screens have I had? NONE. How many errors of any sort? NONE. How many viruses? NONE. How much spyware? ZERO. I have installed printers, new monitors, plenty of peripheral devices without ever having to download a single driver. I plugged in my new printer, within 10 seconds I was able to use every function - print, scan, etc. I have downloaded probably over 50 different pieces of software - how many have had compatibility issues? None.

Have I ever had problems with speed and performance? No. I'm batch processing in Lightroom right now, with Dreamweaver and Photoshop open, as well as Excel, Adobe Reader, Outlook, Firefox, two Windows explorer windows, two powerpoint windows, itunes, and a VPN connection. How much memory is all this using? About 70% of my RAM and 30-40% of my CPU. If I stop the lightroom batching, the cpu use goes to 1-13%.

Well, okay I am running a pretty nice setup, rocking a brand new i7 processor and 6gb of ram... heres my setup

intel core i7 920 2.66ghz
mushkin 6gb ram 1600 mhz
wd green 1tb drive
asus 9600gso gpu
samsung litescribe dvd burner
asus p6t mobo
antec 300 case
corsair 520w psu

My case is INCREDIBLY QUIET and LOOKS GREAT. How is it so quiet? I have 5 fans running at extremely slow speeds so there is hardly any noise. My computer also runs very cool even with the fans powered so low.

How much did this setup run me, 6 months ago? $900.

Wait, $900 for all that? Yes, and I purchased a 22" IPS panel from dell for another $220.

Now, this cost me $1120 6 months ago.

Currently a similar specced mac would run me... wait for it...

3,648.00, yes I just priced it out on the apple site. Wait, is that more than 300% what I paid? Oh, yes yes it is. Now, they aren't exactly the same. The graphics card is 512mb vs. the 384mb I have on mine (to upgrade mine to a 512 would probably cost me $10 or so). And the display is 24" vs. 22" (probably $150 difference for those 2 inches).

Ask yourself. Is it worth it? TRY windows 7. It is a great operating system. I can appreciate why people buy macs (form factor, small size, ease of use - although windows 7 negates this) but this is just ridiculous - I could buy a premade computer from dell for half the price of a similarly specced mac.

You ARE paying for the apple name.

And like someone said, if you are getting viruses/spyware on a windows machine, you are a moron. Plain and simple. I have downloaded torrents, etc. without even running any antivirus software and in my 10 years of using windows computers I have never, ever, had a virus. I am now using avira's free antivirus suite which I have never had to touch other than the 30 seconds it took to install. But, I was without any antivirus/spyware software for 3 years on my old machine and had absolutely NO PROBLEMS.

Seriously, I encourage anyone who truly thinks macs are somehow superior to challenge my points. Its just a matter of personal preference, but dont be so blinded by apple's BS that you actually believe these ads. They make a GREAT phone and ipod, and good computers, but you pay a premium.

@People who say they don't care about gaming, etc. If you don't give a crap about gaming/performance and just want to do simple tasks - word documents, internet, email, etc. then WHY ON EARTH ARE YOU BUYING A MAC? You could get away with a used PC that would be $50 and do what you want... why are you spending thousands???? Even a new intro level dell laptop is $400 and will do more than you want to! Or hell, buy a used mac. But buying a new mac, especially a mac(book) PRO is insane and you obviously have absolutely no clue what you are doing. Seriously, none. Unless you're doing serious photo work, CAD, or gaming, I can't think of very many reasons to own a top of the line system. If its battery life, buy another backup battery for $30... you're saving $2000 by not buying a MBP. Screw it, buy 50 batteries and you will still come out ahead...

I just also want to say that I love using my windows 7 pc. It consistently performs extremely fast, powers on in about 10 seconds, and never ceases to impress me with its usability (ease of use). I just plug stuff in and it automatically works - even devices that provide a cd for installing the drivers - I haven't had to use the cds. And I was on the brink of buying a mac for my professional photography but didn't because it was very expensive relative to the PC, software compatibility was an issue, and I had been using my friend's mac and it froze twice in the 20 min I spent using it.

Oh and anyone who said that the login glitch isn't a big deal (where you lose all your files randomly upon logging in) obviously doesn't use their computer for anything important. Granted, I have backups, but if I lost all my data we are talking about over 10,000 photos that are extremely important to me and fairly valuable in monetary terms, about 80 movies, 20 seasons of TV shows, 5000 songs, all my schoolwork from 8th grade to senior year of college, etc. If I didn't have a backup, or my backup failed, this would be HUGE. I don't care if it happens to a small percentage, this is probably THE BIGGEST bug I have ever heard of. I assume it is fixed by now, but don't kid yourself and assume everyone else is working on such worthless things as you apparently are.

And also, to the guy who said that apple is smart because "from heat transfer 101" they include fans in their power supplies, and if you buy the $100 frys special you don't get that. Are you ****ing retarted? Every psu has a fan, and my psu is far more advanced than the one in your mac. And my case mounts the components strategically so that the fans are blowing on every critical component of the computer and the components are spaced out as much as possible - bottom mounting psu means that the psu is farther from the mobo/cpu/gpu than if it was top mounted. And I am actually currently taking boundary layers and heat transfer thank you very much.

Oh, here is another thought. I love these side by side comparisons between WIN 7 and SN for performance, etc. that various people do (cnet, pcmag, etc). One thing I would like to see is a side by side comparison when the WIN 7 PC has Norton 360 installed or multiple packages like Norton, StopZilla and Uniblue Power suite. My older Dell (2.4 Ghz single processor) takes up to 35 - 40 minutes to boot up to where I can do anything. When it was new and without the anti-everything software it took maybe 30 seconds. We don't even want to talk about the registry issues and how it becomes corrupt so quickly. I'm constantly running a registry cleaner on my XP machine. I can't wait for the new iMac i7 to be delivered.
Hahahahaha this is hilarious. 35-40 minutes? The dell 3.0ghz single proc I just upgraded from (6 yrs old) took about 15-20 seconds to power up. No issues with registry.

I have no clue what you could do to make a pc take longer than a minute to start up. I guess if you smashed some of the components with a hammer, it might not turn on and that would qualify. Or maybe if I went into the registry and ctrl a + deleted the files, that could work. Or maybe if I forgot to plug the computer in, it wouldn't turn on.

Other than that, its essentially impossible to make a computer take anywhere near that long to start up. If you really are that bad with computers, maybe you should get a mac.

My eMac boots in 10 seconds... and its 1.42 Ghz.

Its a clean install, come back in about a month once the break in period has finished. Otherwise all you're doing is releasing more verbal slush.

The price comparison is not relevant, however, since you are comparing a Mac Pro, which uses server-grade parts, to a do-it-yourself, which uses consumer-grade parts.

This would be correct, one may choose to purchase a premium solution.

FYI, The 'login glitch' never did affect user accounts, only the guest account, which would need to have been involved with a remote set of circumstances.

We're all very happy that you are enjoying your pc - many of us are also running W7 - been there, done that, and are still underwhelmed - but don't let that rain on your parade.

Hey there. Regarding the "if your that stupid, maybe you should get a mac" is sort of spot on.

No offense to the poster he was talking to, but back in the day of mac vs IBM and IBM clones, what we now just call pcs, I am a mac user butvstarted in pc's and it was IBM's vision for homes to have terminals and IBM would come out and help you if you had a problem. That was the original plan. At the same time, windows started to gain speed but IBM started gearing off toward businesses and the mac were for people that did not under computing thus pc people always frowned on mac users as being stupid, which to some extent, they were.

But then the creatives started buying macs mainly due to SCSI drives and hiw fast they were. Something apple embraced and windows did not and this is how it really all started. There were even mac clones bac in the day but I can remember when I was little, if younwanted a mac, that meant you lacked technical skills and yhen in time, it became all about how much slower the mac was compared to a windows machine and intel charged huge dollars for just an extra 100mhz and AMD came along and out a stop to that. In fact, AMD and Apple both had this in common in that intel, during the Athlon days, needed at least 1.0ghz faster to match a slower speed Amd chip but now that AMD is no longer a threat, at least right now, intel is back to charging a fortune for the high end chips. Can't recall the name but just yesterday there was an article on this MIT start up that has 100 cores on one chip nd how it will make it's way to x86 in a few years and uses like 1/3 to 2/3 the power and run cool.

Anyway the point is, for some, they wont go near a computer for others, especially mac buyers, there are a lot if people that would be bettercoff with a mac even though windows has changed that with the 7 release, but as I and a few others have said time and time again, it's time for apple to grow up, and stop catering to just the iPhone users. Again, gaming alone makes up more sales then music and video combined so apple needs to stop worrying about their very small pro market share and go after the midrange crowd alanheadless mid tower, then they could gain. Much larger market share.

In a counter argument to how stupid the Macintosh users were. It was only deemed stupid because it was easier than the standard. I mean really, are we expected to know now how the internals work to use a computer? So 70% of computer users stupid?

And the prices for PCs were ludicrously high. I had a performa 5400* as a child and I still love that thing. Its in storage somewhere with some completely awesome games that were given to me by my school. They changed to Win95 and the computers were a pile of tards. :D And in my last few years they got the G3s.

*For those who though I had a 5200, i rechecked last time I was at the storage depo.

They're for people who think Macs are "just for art"
They're for people who don't want a Mac because they like their USB printer and don't want to buy an Apple one

They're for people who don't believe it when they hear iWork opens Word files
They're for people who don't believe a computer doesn't need anti virus software
They're for people who think Internet Explorer is the only way to browse the Web
They're for...

They are still filled with junk that is just flat up not true.

And I still see posts in this thread that are just dumb.

Okay my rant was kinda long/one sided, but it pisses me off that people are so biased.

Apple targets the "I dont know anything about computers" market, particularly with their "it just works" campaign. And they do well doing so.

But people who actually think PCs are as infected with spyware/viruses as they are made out to be are completely wrong.

The price comparison is not relevant, however, since you are comparing a Mac Pro, which uses server-grade parts, to a do-it-yourself, which uses consumer-grade parts.
I have tried to make the best comparison possible. Would you mind linking me to a list of the server grade parts the mac pro uses so that I can make a more justified comparison? Are the server grade parts worth triple what the consumer grade are? This seems to be people's reason for paying more for a mac - better parts.

Many consumers and pros would simply rather not deal with the distraction of viruses at all - go figure.
You won't have trouble with viruses with either OS, like I said.

This would be correct, one may choose to purchase a premium solution.
Why is it a premium solution? Give me reasons why it is better, not why windows is worse.

FYI, The 'login glitch' never did affect user accounts, only the guest account, which would need to have been involved with a remote set of circumstances
Not according to the way this cnet article was worded, but I could be incorrect: when logging into the guest account on their Mac first and then logging into their regular account, some users are finding all their data to be missing and their accounts completely reset. That makes it sound like... well all their data is gone. But if it is just the guest account I agree that's not a big deal, sorry for making it out to be one.

So, their target demographic is... yes let me sum this up for everyone:
Uneducated computer users Exactly the point I'm trying to make, if people did research and comparison and thought for themselves they would see how ludicrous these ads are and the reason windows makes up 90% of the market. And, with these ads and windows 7's release, this figure will grow.

My eMac boots in 10 seconds... and its 1.42 Ghz.

Its a clean install, come back in about a month once the break in period has finished. Otherwise all you're doing is releasing more verbal slush.
? I am only trying to counter the "PCs take 35-40min to boot" view. I believe your mac boots in 10 seconds, as does my PC. Sure, older macs are probably slightly faster booting than older PCs because their OS's run a bit better on older hardware. However, thats not related to the point I'm trying to make. Regarding the "break in period", I don't even know what youre talking about. If you think my PC is going to slow down after a month, you are very wrong. If you read my post I've had it for 6 months and have had no drop in speed, no viruses, no spyware, never had to defrag/virus scan, etc. This is all stuff of the past, really mostly of the late 90s and early 2000s.

I really don't have anything against macs. I think they are probably slightly more intuitive to use, and I agree they look great and are very well designed. And for some people they are a better solution. But I absolutely can't stand how apple has been pushing straight BS in their ads for the past 3 years. Seriously, its a large part of the reason why I built my own PC - I don't want to give money to a company who continues to make ads that are completely misleading and not true. And for anyone who is very into computers, I think PCs just make more sense.

How exactly do you figure this?

Concerning the nature of the ads, you use Windows 7, yet Microsoft throws out as much misinformation in their marketing as Apple has - welcome to capitalism.

Concerning the recent ads and 7 and upgrading. I would think that outside of enthusiasts who would upgrade the OS themselves, Windows 7 means buying a new computer. There is nothing wrong with targeting people switching computers to consider a Mac.

You are probably right that those that are into computers should go with a PC since they get to tinker with things.

For the vast majority of people, however, a computer in 2009 is nothing more than an consumable appliance, and Apple has done a very good job lately at designing such things.

Are you ****ing retarted?

The irony is delicious.

I don't understand how these ads are still airing. There is absolutely nothing factual in them, they are just making BS up and some of its sticking because people are too ignorant to actually do some research....How many viruses? NONE. How much spyware? ZERO.

You're right, of course. Spyware is just a myth perpetuated by evil Apple and their ridiculous ads. There is no such thing as spyware and Windows users absolutely aren't affected by it.

Oh, wait:

Apologies: We Had Malware Running as Ads On Gizmodo

Guys, I'm really sorry but we had some malware running on our site in ad boxes for a little while last week on Suzuki ads. They somehow fooled our ad sales team through an elaborate scam. It's taken care of now, and only a few people should have been affected, but this isn't something we take lightly as writers, editors and tech geeks. (And we would have noticed sooner except everyone on staff is on OS X or Linux for production machines.) Everything should be cleared up but you should be checking "qegasysguard.exe" if you're experiencing random popups. Be careful, load up some antivirus and make sure your system is clean. I'm sorry.

Like I said, I've had absolutely no problems with spyware, viruses, or anything. I was without antivirus software for 3 years and didn't have a problem.

I'm not saying everyone's computer will be perfect. But I am saying that this idea that PCs are constantly bogged down by this phantom spyware and viruses - which judging by mac ads probably come bundled with the PC when you buy it, is completely false.

And my "are you ****ing retarted" quote came from some guy essentially saying that cheap PCs dont have fans in their power supplies, and apple is better because they realize you need a fan in the power supply... what PC doesn't have a fan in the psu I don't know.
