It seems to be working for them. These ads bring a smile to my face and elicit laughter out of my fiancee (who is not a techie). If you don't like them at all, you're likely either taking things too seriously or you're really far out of Apple's target audience for the ads.

I own 3 fairly recent Apple products and I'd have to say I personally think the Windows 7 ads MS released today(?) are much more positive and show off features of the OS whereas these Apple ads really seem smug and have a more negative tone. Win 7 really is getting off to a better start than Vista was so it'll be interesting to see how the non-geek/tech sector likes it.

Mac OS (Snow Leopard, etc.) is not a true operating system. Even Apple knows this. Proof = Boot Camp. One can not live in today's computer world without Windows. Windows is Omniscient.

The OS was is over and has been since Windows 95.

Rubbish

I work in a computer shop and I can say I have seen 2 BSOD today. I opened up a brand new Acer Timeline let it installed all the software it needs, then tried to copy over the clients data from a USB stick, but as soon as I plugged in the USB stick BSOD!!!..

Cant say I like 7 yet!!

Microsoft needs to take off the kid gloves and punch back at what you REALLY pay for when you buy a Mac:

It's all about elitism. You PAY for the Apple brand name, like you do for a Sony product like a TV. Call it what it is-- the Apple Tax.

Undertood?

Apple tax is slowly becoming pure fantasy....for iMacs, it exists only according to ignorant people who aren't aware of the price of a IPS panel...actually iMacs are the best quality/price value on the All-In-One market....

iPhone? With AppStore you get the cheapest SOFTWARE on the smarthone market.

Macbook Pro? Name a cheaper laptop with that build and materials, backlit keyboard and so on....look at the Envy or the high-end VAIOs, look what happen to the price when someone use good materials like Apple.....is it "HP Tax" on the envy?

Summing it up....what you stated is pure BS.

Continue living in your fantasy where people buy Macs only for the brand....

Funny, what was the Apple OS like when Windows 95 and 98 were out? Yeh, nothing to brag about. Actually, it should be a source of shame. Oh, and lets not even get stated on 10.0.

I think some of you are forgetting that Macs have 10% of the marketshare, while the iPhones have like over 60%. These are the kind of ads they need, because their only real userbase is current PC users. When they drill it in your head that PCs are virus infected, buggy, crash constantly, and are considered cheap, it lingers in the back of customer's heads when they go out to purchase a computer. It's what is effective, when it comes to computers the average person doesn't care about specifics.

Damn this came by quickly, and there's already a bunch of comments along the same line as the one I came here to write:

"We are a commercial."

Best line ever.

Microsoft VP 1: "Guys, we need to do something to improve our logo. Our new operating system is better but people still associate us with viruses, blue screens, and Windows Vista. What do we do?"

Microsoft VP 2: "We need to re-invent our logo. What about changing our name to Wapple?"

Microsoft VP 3: "What! That sounds too much like Apple. We cannot use their names. But we cou...."

Microsoft VP 1: "Let's keep our names but do everything like Apple - like the Vista Widgets and "I am a Mac" commercials. How about naming our operating systems based on numerical values: Win 95, Win 98, 2000, Me, XP, Vista --- those names have no order. How about Windows 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and this new one will be 7."

Microsoft VP 2: "Yes, yes, yes! Let's set up fancy stores to show off our hardware."

Microsoft VP 1: "What hardware? Oh yeah, our Zune..."

*They all look at each other with guilt and start smiling*

Microsoft VP 1: "I totally forgot about that. How does it compare to the iPod and iPhone?"

In unison: "I don't have a Zune."

Microsoft VP 2: "Ok, enough chit-chat. Let's open a store called Windows Store and have a Smart Bar?"

Microsoft VP 3: "Smart bar sounds too similar to Genius Bar. How about the Answer Bar. And let's hire Apple's people so that they know what they are doing."

In unison: "Yes!"

Microsoft VP 1: "That concludes our meeting then. We will set up stores. Let's meet again when Apple comes up with something cool. Hmmpf! I mean something new."
 + :apple: = :)

I imagine Apple buys also Mac vs Pc ads by the hundreds. 12 ads for 100 dollars? One joke is good the first time and perhaps a second one. It is getting depressing and pathetic.

Please price out a comparable machine and then get back to us.
Really? This argument again?

I built an i7-based system for my gaming need, and here were the parts:

Intel i7 920
6 GB Corsair DDR3 1600
ASUS Rampage II Gene motherboard
Lite On DVD+/- RW drive (SATA)
One 640GB HD (SATA)
Radeon 5850
Corsair HX750 PSU
Corsair H50 CPU water cooler
Linksys WMP300N wireless adapter
mATX case
Logitech Illuminated Keyboard
Microsoft Sidewinder X8
Windows 7 Professional

Total system cost? $1545 (I actually got Windows 7 Pro for $40 through the educational discount, but the price I used for the estimation was the $130 OEM cost I've seen around)

The entry-level Mac Pro uses the server-based version of the i7 920, but it's comparable. Here's how I spec'd the Mac Pro using Apple's store:

Xeon 2.66 Ghz
6 GB Ram
640 GB drive (default)
ATI Radeon 4870 (last-gen, 5850 is easily better, but highest-available option)
18x SuperDrive (default)
AirPort Xtreme Wi-Fi card
Standard Apple mouse, keyboard

Cost? $2899

So comparable systems roughly (I'd argue the system I built is better, due to a likely better motherboard with SLI/Crossfire support, and the Radeon 5850), but a ~ $1300 price difference. So you're essentially paying $1300 for the Apple name, case, and labor.

I also checked Dell, and after suffering through their horrendous selection process, I was able to similarly spec a system (except using a 5870 instead of a 5850) for $1799. A couple of hundred more than mine, but still $1100 beneath Apple's price.

Don't get me wrong, I love OS X, and think one of it's best advantages is the close-knit nature Apple maintains between the hardware they develop and OS X. But don't try and say that Apple's prices are the same as others.

all those previous claims were probably all close to true...

BUT, new versions create more problems that didn't exist in previous ones...

I'm sick of these ads as a whole, but damn if those weren't spot on. Microsoft's ads, while really cool IMO, were simply more of the "I'm a PC" jockeying.

Now that I think of this, both series of ads are ****. No fanboyism needed.

I beg to differ. Pushing the #1 in customer satisfaction note is a really good selling point to those who don't have (or are considering) getting a Mac.
Yes. The second strong point they make is that you are going to have to start fresh anyway. It's just as easy to start fresh with a Mac.

Hopefully he'll think twice when hitting "publish" on his 7 review.

I don't think anyone needs to worry about Win7 reviews because a lot of us have been running it (via Bootcamp) for months in beta and realized it's quite competent and much more streamlined.

Plus the commercial is so misleading in painting every Windows release as a 'flop' they forget that only Windows ME (shudders) was a total disaster while Vista merely limped out of the starting gate. (Only get to make a first impression once sadly for them)

I guess MS should make an ad highlighting Apples gems like the Newton, OSX pre 10.3, The great firewire HD killer, 20th Anniversary Mac, Apple TV, Pippin, iPod HiFi, G4 Cube, Dropping support for 3yr old PPC systems, Mac Mini (I'm dead for that one!)

Do you know what an operating system is, just asking?

Yeah I mean its getting old. Sure they are sending the message to buy a Mac, but why don't you try to sell me on the qualities of your product instead of the faults of the competitions.

iphone has 60 percent marketshare? Where?
