LOL not exactly, i would rather have my computer perform decently rather than have a shiny slow piece of garbage.

the imac still uses notebook class core2duos, do you have any idea of how slow that is compared to a desktop Core i7 for CHEAPER? now matter how shiny it looks i cant play Call of duty 4 worth a damn on a 9400. that and i cant trans code any videos in a respectable amount of time.

BTW my gaming rig now cost over $2700 since i added a 47" 1080p 120hz display and 7.2 surround with polk audio speakers/velodyne subs

im no stranger to spending a huge amount of cash, but the difference between me and you is i actually have something to show for the money i spend with equivalent performance

dont believe me?

partial unboxing of the speakers for testing (this pic is kinda old and dont show the subs or the TV mounted to the wall) gaming rig is the Antec 900 case which is now in its own office in my new basement that i built specifically for gaming
That's some nice stuff. I'll stick with my P180 mini though. :p

My desk is even more of a mess...

Apple's marketshare in terms of purchased/owned hardware goes up. And I'm all for it.

The percentage of exclusive OS X users in a household? Fairly stale. Remember the report that a large percentage of Mac households also run Windows (either having Windows-based systems, or running Windows through Boot Camp or virtually)? http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/10/macs-in-12-of-us-households-majority-also-have-windows-pcs.ars

The reality is, Microsoft doesn't care whether someone runs Windows on Mac hardware or on a system from Dell, HP, etc. They only care about selling copies of Windows. And apparently, most Mac users also use Windows. Apple is happy. Microsoft is happy. The world is happy.

The only one "losing out" on it are the PC manufacturers.
The number of people that don't realize this or want to admit it, priceless.

Yeah, you have no room to move.

I find it funny when people disparage these current ads when Apple was actually losing market share with every ad prior to the switcher ads. If the ads don't move your product, they're crap, no matter how artsy or beautiful they are.
There's no doubt that overall the PC vs. Mac ads have helped them. The thing though is that they could get more creative in just what they use for PC vs. Mac.

For example, show a user interested in a desktop. Have "PC" begin to be surrounded by all different types of PC towers, PC monitors, etc.

Then have "Mac" surrounded by the redesigned iMac.

Another example: show "PC" trying to plug in some devices, and dealing with driver issues. Then show "Mac" plugging in the same device, and having OS X instantly recognize it.

Is it completely realistic? Not necessarily (since you do see Mac hardware shipping with drivers at times, though rare). But it does do "PC vs. Mac" in a much more creative way.

I think what a lot of people are frustrated about is that it always harps on the same old topics. The best time to use anything related to virus issues, etc., is when you'd hear about something major in the news. That's not too often though, so otherwise, it grows stale.

It doesn't run OS X. Therefore the "performance" is worthless.

actually that model can run OSX because people have already tested it, but even if it didnt, your saying windows cant run anything? you realize that almost NO BUSINESS out there would function? it can run ubuntu x64 too, i guess thats totally useless, maybe you should tell that to the ubuntu community.

"sorry your not using OSX and therefore all of you are worthless"

typical mac fanboy......

How's the battery life on your super machine? Exactly… I would be shocked if it could get 2 hours. Gaming performance isn't on my laptop wishlist. Battery performance is.

you want battery performance? how about a swappable battery? my old Asus could hold a primary, an optical bay and an external battery all at the same time for some ridiculously long run time.

my work laptop which is a D830 has swappable batteries, 1 primary and you can swap as MANY optical bay batteries in as you want, for long trips i can run 2 days on batteries. (i have before since i was stupid and forgot the charger but i had 3 swappable in my bag and 1 already in my laptop)

by default the laptop will get 4.5-5hrs on its primary and an additional 3 PER swap battery.

4Hrs + 3hrs + 3hrs +3hrs +3hrs = 16hrs = 2x 8 hour work periods.

you can swap the battery without turning off the laptop as it just switches to its primary while your swapping.

if you need extreme battery life you can last 15 hours on some netbooks with a 13000mAH battery (not talking 9" netbooks which are hard to do work on, im talking the Athlon netbooks that are 12", full keyboard, 64bit, 2GB ram, 1TB HDD capable)

Jesus. No matter how you try and swing it, Apple's computers *never* line up with comparable machines.

It's why as an informed consumer and mac user did not buy an Apple laptop when it came to upgrade.

I bought a Lenovo T500 for $1400 that spec for spec out did the Macbook Pro 15 with dedicated graphics.

I couldn't find a reason to pay for a machine that was $600 more yet had literally nothing to offer that the T500 didn't. Hell the T500 even came with a 3-year warranty standard.

It doesn't run OS X, but I don't care. Windows has been doing just fine for me. It does what I need it to do in a fast, affordable, reliable package without a shiny aluminum case that will get scratched all to hell in a few months at a premium price.

[pic of awesome setup]

Dude! Antec cases are instant win! Would love a nice sound system myself (ironically enough, right in this moment, for some reason Alsa and PulseAudio broke... and now I have no sound... at all :p)

edit: I forgot. The guy saying you worked at BK just got A MASSIVE BURN!

Try browsing the internet on that ASUS …see how close you get to MacBook performance.

Like I said. I don't buy my notebooks to game.
Dim the monitor to the same level.

Unplugged, Windows should switch it to Portable/Laptop for performance mode (usually does it by default with any installation, though it can be manually changed also).

Intel Speed Step technology kicks in, throttling the processor as needed.

Windows 7 CPU thread management kicks in, so that cores are only used as needed (so in essence, for light applications like web browsing or office apps, only one core is used and the rest are "deactivated")

Will it get 7-8 hours? I doubt it. Will it probably get 5-6? Yeah, I'd imagine so.

I've seen a Dell XPS Core 2 Duo desktop replacement get 4 hours using Windows XP, not dimming the monitor, and without many of the optimizations now present. It's no where near the MBP, but it's definitely not some 1-2 hour energy-consuming behemoth.

Funny, what was the Apple OS like when Windows 95 and 98 were out? Yeh, nothing to brag about. Actually, it should be a source of shame. Oh, and lets not even get stated on 10.0.

And Windows 9x shouldn't be a source of shame? Don't try to pull that over on me. I've actually used Windows 9x. Hell, you couldn't even change network settings without rebooting. Application access to USER and GDI were serialized, so only pseudo-preemptive multitasking. There was no memory protection, hence all the blue screens. Throwing a Win16 program into the mix would throw you back into 100% cooperative multitasking.

I didn't ask about the battery life of a Dell D830 …I asked about the Asus mentioned above.

Also, if you are going to buy extra batteries, you need to add that to the price.

I see you're too cheap to get a good H-IPS 24"+ Monitor, but gotta have 'dem loud speakers.

Last time I checked these ads mentioned Macs have the highest satisfaction rates in the industry, what more needs to be said?

Yup it did. But it had to talk about Windows 7 first. I could care less about what MS is up to, if I'm watching an Apple commercial I want to know about Apple products.

But hey I'm not the consumer Apple targets so who cares...

They should have released this BEFORE Windows 7 came out and started getting stellar reviews across the board from all over the internet...

Apple is a "contrast" company. A lot of their success comes from people contrasting them with Windows...they need the comparison.

Mac OS (Snow Leopard, etc.) is not a true operating system. Even Apple knows this. Proof = Boot Camp. One can not live in today's computer world without Windows. Windows is Omniscient.

The OS was is over and has been since Windows 95.

Agreed.

Please expound upon this. I've never had this happen on my Mac.

Shouldn't Apple spend money trying to fix the GIANT BUG THAT DELETES ALL OF A USER'S DATA instead of making commercials?

It would be GREAT if MS made a commercial like that...

Microsoft needs to take off the kid gloves and punch back at what you REALLY pay for when you buy a Mac:

1z3mbzt.jpg

It's all about elitism. You PAY for the Apple brand name, like you do for a Sony product like a TV. Call it what it is-- the Apple Tax.

I don't see the biggest cost segment on that sliced up Apple and that's Apples R&D benefiting Microsoft on OS, MP3 Players, Digital Music Stores, and Brick and Mortar Retail Stores or Palm on cell phones?!

I'm kind of over-burnt-out on these commercials.

I love Apple and think these actors are very talented but this whole concept is tiresome. The creativity is gone.

Coke and Pepsi are great rivals with some awesome commercial series. Apple could take a few pointers from them.

I disagree. I for one believe the only way to get something truly innovating is for MS, Apple and now Google (which brings Linux into the table) to keep shoving **** at themselves. And I mean true innovation, a whole new paradigm on how to use a computer.

Whether an add pisses a group of people or makes the pants wet of the other group of users.... I couldn't care less.

Apple is a "contrast" company. A lot of their success comes from people contrasting them with Windows...they need the comparison.

I don't remember ever seeing an iPhone commercial contrast WinMo or Android or Symbian. Yeah they have typically used this contrast with computers, but they don't have to.

There are plenty of reasons to buy a mac that aren't centered around Windows.

I want to see the cost of what it would take you to design and build a similar LOOKING computer, functionality is not a valid price comparison.

Apple spends some serious $$$ on design and I'll say it (for the Windows Flamers), MACs have a better WOW factor, stick that in your price comparison.

Please price out a comparable machine and then get back to us.

Microsoft: "Today, we would like to announce retail availability of Win..."

Apple: "Yo Ballmer, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but we have the best operating system launch of the year."

Obnoxious and smug.

to some, a computer is a box on the floor

i know i prefer functionality over design

i mena i dont use my computer to look at it

LMFAO, OMG ITS SOOO big i cant carry it, too emo have to cut myself.

yes the most important thing when buying either a computer or a car is how anorexic it is and the color/shininess

you remind me of this spoiled tramp,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JvtlB_NzI8

the onion got it right, it seems like you people dick around looking at how "nice" your unusably thin hardware is more than you do actual work

I do actual work. You built that machine to game right? nice work.

BTW. If my laptop was made of wood I wouldn't care as long as its thin. Try carrying those brick laptops you post about around campus all day. Go on just try it, I dare you. Especially in the summertime.

PS.

Hi I'm a PC!

And I'm a Cocky Bastard. Come on, everyone knows Mac is a cocky bastard =D

Double edit. My computer is for more important things than games, oh... sorry. GAMING GAMING GAMING!

BTW my MB games fine. COD4 on high isn't bad at all. Even on the normal Macbook.
