The EU shouldn't be taken lightly, they could very well decide that 30% of apps on Apple/Google app store should be developed in the EU, or be available in French, German, Italian and Spanish, or whatever irrational you can think of.

More about politics than law.

Apple can't count on winning anything against the EU.
I would imagine 30% of apps in the store probably made in the EU anyway

1. Go to WalMart.
2. Pick sprocket from shelf.
3. Pay at checkout.

Sprocket not in stock? Wrong sprocket color? Sprocket not on sale?

Skip step (2) above. Go to Target instead. Then proceed to step 2. (*—Note: this step is not comparable to such a software deployment paradigm as the App Store.)

Walmart = iOS, Target = Android. Why don't people understand this? People's arguments here are similar to wanting to force Walmart to have a Target inside its same infrastructure.

You physically need to leave Walmart, travel some miles unless you are lucky and have a target next door (there are no Target and Walmart next door where I live) and physically walk in to a Target store.

Same applies with iOS and Android. Leave the iOS "store" and walk in to Android "store".

This is maybe the silliest thing I’ve read today.

Apple hasn’t been a “major gaming platform” since the apple ii. And nothing about this epic dustup will have a noticeable effect on apple’s “casual games” ios catalog.

Apple’s the biggest company in the world having not had anything resembling a presence in gaming for 30 years, but now this is going to “hurt Apple more than Epic?”

Nonsense.

Yep. You say Apple and Gaming in the same context people will laugh at you, and rightly so. (Mac side here) A far cheaper Windows PC ~$1,000 with a NVIDIA GPU completely smacks the $6,000 Mac Pro in gaming. Literally double or triple the performance if not more.

I wouldn't mind the Apple Tax.........as long as Apple paid taxes like the rest of us in Europe. Apple needs knocking down a peg or 2. They've become bullies and can get away with anything. Kudos to Epic for making a Cheaper Games Store on PC and charging developers 50% less than Apple/steam etc does. You don't even have to buy any games on Epics store and you still get really good games for free without Ads etc. GTA 5, Batman Trilogy, Hitman, Borderlands pre sequel, just cause 4 etc. Epic works with developers. They've fought for cross play and won. They are more for the gamers than any other big company. Epic has to maintain a store with massive download sizes for less and an amazing graphics engine.
Epic gets my vote.
Can we please keep this tax discussion out of it. Complain about the laws. Apple legally pays the amount of tax they are legally required to. If it bothers you that they pay too little, complain about the laws, not Apple.

It shows tha real intention behind this. In a sense, Epic has zero care about the platforms themselves. They simply want a way to have user data for themselves. Apple is an easy target due to their large size and Epic can pretend to be the underdog. It feeds well to the politicians as well.
Then I can definitely see them using this Apple case as a thing to point to when they go after Sony and Microsoft. Epic essentially wants to do what they are doing on PC - being the real anti-competitors here. Preventing Borderlands 3, Metro, Satisfactory and many others from being on steam is way more anti-competitive than anything Apple is doing. Third party app stores were never possible, so there is no anti-competitive behavior going on that prevents Epic from launching a store if it is not possible currently. Its not like its possible and Apple is blocking them.

Most Android users dont even get the chance to update their OS on their phones so weak argument. I have never had an iOS update install without asking me first. I dont select auto update in settings
Also, I lost some work in Visual Studio when Windows decided to update itself. But its my fault for not setting the update times properly.

Well if Apple looses in court over this nothing is stopping Apple to start charging for all the development tools and software and not to mention all the staffing the 30% cut actually covers.

Thanks a lot Epic. You might have just started a negative precedent on all this. You are being greedy and it will probably backfire on you by effecting every single developer in the world.

I can just see it now, $500-1,000 for XCode itself (similar to Visual Studio pricing for standalone costs Pro vs Enterprise). Cost up to 100 GB of downloads from the store with a monthly subscription of $50. Have the app discover-able in the App Store for $15 a month. And the actual developer subscription will be a few hundred a year that includes the vetting app cost.

Regardless of which side of the epic vs apple fence ya fall on, YouTube legend Louis Rossman, makes some great observations IMHO.

If in the very narrow chance the Eu/ Epic or whatever force apple to change their stance I can imagine that whatever Appstore is available is ridiculously crippled. Api access diminished and cant access the wider benefits of the system (faceid, url routing etc...). And any in app payments cant be made if the app originated in the app store.

It will end up being a waste of everyones time.

(well that's what i would do if I were Apple).
This is not what Epic wants.

2)A competing Epic Games Store app available through the iOS App Store and through direct installation that has equal access to underlying operating system features for software installation and update as the iOS App Store itself has, including the ability to install and update software as seamlessly as the iOS App Store experience

It's more annoying to compare mobile with console when the more direct comparison for iOS is Android which does have alternative app stores and non-restrictive app side loading. Once FTC resolves the iOS app store monopoly then they can go after consoles.

Why? Because that fulfills your personal narrative?

Most people like to live in a world driven by facts. Courts rule not on emotion but laws.

Please point out the alternative app stores for Sony etc. We can wait (but not for long)

When you come back with the factual answer then care to explain how Apple allow third party apps only through their single app store differs from Sony only allowing third-party apps through their app store?

I'd love to know the actual difference. And no, claiming one's a console and one's a smartphone doesn't count.

Apple has fallen so behind and the fanboys don’t even see it lol They have been trapped in their walled gardens so long they can’t see there are better options out there. Their arrogant response is “go get an android“ lmao Apple won’t stay on top forever. And if they continue to make the same boring iPhone for the 5th year in a row people will start to get tired and leave. The fanboys won’t leave no matter what but the average consumer will leave for the next best thing. Bet on it.
iPhones have all been playing catch up lately with Android. A lot of the new iOS features existed on Android. However, I got the iPhone for the locked down experience. I like to know I need to only go to one place for apps. If that did not exist, I would have went with Android because, like you said, they are superior. However, I find the locked down environment enough of a benefit that I chose iPhones over Android. And people want to take the only good feature (in my opinion) away from iPhones.

He still around? Good grief I personally find him an rather opinionated trumped up vile little sniveling individual...

It's weird to see people celebrating higher prices and restricted options.

I, as a developer, would be happy if Apple lowered it to 15% or even lower. Heck make it free, it will make me happy. However, I am not for "androidifying" an iPhone because I chose iPhone for the locked down experience alone. Android has actually been far superior for a long time now.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel :p

I'm not sure what Louis Rossman did to earn your disgust, however his championing of right-to-repair and bringing that issue to a wider audience is good for the environment, small business, and us hobbyists and tinkerers.

For that I'm grateful that people like him exist and admire his work ethic and willingness to share.

epic games just turned into epic fail

since they disliked the 30% revenue cut, they can now enjoy the 100% cut.

Rossman is awesome and he brings a good point up when he brings the environment into question and how apple claims to be a sustainable company producing sustainable products.

You talk about the Apple App Store Monopoly. Would you please provide some U.S. case law that supports your position?

The court is quite clear on this matter:

’A "manufacturer's own products do not themselves compromise a relevant product market" and a "company does not violate the Sherman Act by virtue of the natural monopoly it holds over its own product"’

For this reason, the Pystar court held that a relevant market limited to the Mac OS was an improper, single-brand market, and dismissed tying claims based on Apple requiring only the Mac OS to be used on Apple computers.

In addition, the Peoplesoft case is another where the courts made clear that narrow definitions of markets are incorrect.

However, one can argue that other stores should be allowed. Question is, will anyone use them?
Another question is will Apple void or limit AppleCare if they’re forced to allow stores that don’t give a crap about filtering malware. Why should screwing up your iPhone thanks to the Epic Store, for example, be Apple’s problem to repair?

Fixed that for you.

By people like him do you mean shameless self-promoters who peddle half truths (or out right lies) to generate fame (oh, and by the way, lots of money), or did you have something else in mind?

Then if you, as a developer, want to earn more money from each purchase, you simply up the price so your 70 % cut matches you want to earn. Why do some many "developers" here have such a hard time grasping how basic economics work?
