AppleWatch + Glasses + AirPods could be the 1-2-3 punch that gradually replaces the iPhone and sets Apple up for the next decade.

If you mean another decade in which Apple is constantly described as “beleagured”, then yes.

they should update their obsolete mac line instead of constantly wasting time on streets that never end

Yeah Apple, innovate like its 2013!!! Day late and a few billion short on the game these days.

except, how do you type in your password...?

Passwords are trending towards extinction replaced by Biometrics.
Why do you need WiFi when you take your dog for a walk?

I don't. I leave my phone at home so I can mostly disconnect. But along the way, I do pick up WiFi on my AppleWatch which downloads any pending imessages and other notifications.

Bull.... they've deliberately ignored a generation of intel processors in the mac pro. And besides on ALL their computers they could have updated them in countless other ways: (including but not limited to) RAM, SSD size, graphics, PRICE!!! etc.

To blame to rotting lineup of Macs on Intel is the greatest fallacy that continues to be spread on these forums.

Ehhhhh yea I suppose I see your point there. I am no engineer, but I suppose the costs of updating the machines simply outweighed the financial gain to Apple. Abandonment? Maybe. Good business move? Sure. Apple has become more of a consumer focused company over a pro focused company. And while this pisses the pro community off, there's clearly a reason for doing so. I'd say Microsoft is filling that role currently for some.

…suggesting the project is in the exploratory prototyping phase of development. If work on the glasses progresses, they could be released in 2018.

We are currently about 45 days out from 2017. If this thing is just now in the exploratory phase, with no real working prototype device, then don't expect this to be released before 2020. Apple doesn't rush this crap. Remember the years of rumors about the iPhone? And the iPad? And the Apple Watch? Even with all those years of work, many people like to point out how rough around the edges or slow these devices were compared to their successors. The 3GS blew the iPhone out of the water and added capabilities like video. The iPad 2 made the iPad much more enjoyable to use by incredible speed improvements—many iPad 2's are still in use today while the iPad hasn't had software updates in ages. And the first gen Apple Watch was slow and laggy (although software updates have helped somewhat). Don't expect this thing any time soon—especially not in 2018 if they are just now beginning to explore things. If they've been working on it for years, then maybe.

As for the device itself, I could see Apple taking an approach like the Apple Watch, where they go and make a bunch of different styles and sizes, perhaps with replaceable stems made out of different materials in many different colors with a few different metal finishes for the frames. I'd think it would look pretty much like regular glasses so people don't get freaked out, made possible by new tiny lithium batteries and even tinier, energy efficient ARM chips. BUT the problem with that approach is that you can't make the design too distinctive or people will know they're Apple Glasses and freak out in bathrooms and everywhere else. But if you're buying glasses that expensive, don't you want to stand out somewhat? The Apple Watch certainly stands out as distinctive compared to many smart watches on the market. So the big problem you have to get around is making people not freak out about being filmed all the time. Maybe make it really obvious when a video or photo is being taken? There are a lot of psychological barriers that need to be crossed, which is yet another reason why I don't expect to see this in 2018.

Better carry a gun too, then. Cause you never know.

Speaking of distracted driving.
As someone who has to wear glasses, I can't imagine wanting to when you don't have to.

Sorry I just can't see this being a hit. Just as the Apple Watch reached its peak early I just don't see enough people wanting to know what time it is or what next calendar is by glancing up and seeing??? It will distract not just driving but walking.

Lolwut?!
There have only been like 2 eye wearables of note. One failed & was officially shuttered in January 2015 (Google Glass), & the other JUST dropped a few days ago (SnapChat Spectacles).
If you think this product category is completely dead & has zero chance of any innovation whatsoever, from that one company's failure- you must've also given up on tablets as a form factor back in 2002, when the tablet Bill Gates introduced at COMDEX flopped, yeah??

I wish Apple worked and concentrated its efforts on the AR glasses instead of this useless, pointless iWatch rubbish. My opinion.

I sure hope they are working on these in the lab. Sure - goofy now. Just like glasses were goofy, having an earpiece was goofy. Everything is odd at first but once it is clear the benefits of augmentation are worth it - and they will be long term, they will be common place.

Hm, I haven't seen much exciting stuff come out of Apple's labs lately....

Touch bar and especially touch ID are derivative, and so is this project.

Project Titan seemed exciting, but it was apparently mismanaged and is now shuttered.

Hope I am wrong.

Which Apple product would you not describe as having been derivative?

What lack of imagination. The iPod was a Mac accessory and gradually moved away to become independent. AppleWatch is only going to get more powerful and eventually untethered from the iPhone.

I already leave my iPhone at home when taking my dog for a walk, picking up WiFi signals on my AppleWatch along the way. Low power LTE chips are coming to market, which will enable small devices like a watch to use cellular service while maintaining reasonable battery life.

Having all of your personal computing on a device that you wear is an extraordinarily attractive proposition. Once it's possible, it'll absolutely take off and for many people, it'll replace their iPhones just like iPhones replaced the need to carry a laptop around for access to your data and communications.

I guess the big picture you are missing is that it's not the computing power or potential, it's the fact the average user does not want a watch...... that is the reason smart watches are a fail....they answer a problem that does not exist....a niche product is not going to overtake the smartphone ....

Sorry, but smart watches just have not taken off....the iPhone is a runway success

The privacy issues will upset folk. I think this will be difficult to overcome.
#ThatCreepyPersonFilmingMyDaughterWithoutAsking

The Disney idea is a good idea maybe if they were handed out and given back after visit.
Also supermarkets for finding items, again on loan.

I am absolutely convinced this is how the future will be though. It is just a matter of time. Google Glass was a bit early and before the mainstream heard of VR or AR. Now that more people know what it is (instead of thinking that the camera on the glasses are recording video of them) it will be more acceptable, especially by 2018 when this story says they will be debut.

Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps!
