Lots of zombies going around head down looking at a tiny screen in their hands or speaking in public apparently to themselves. That was a nightmare scenario to think about not more than 15 years ago. It is possible that an eye appendix will be considered "normal" in next 10 years

We can look forward to lots of zombies looking straight through each other talking in unrelated sentences, like "Hey Siri, tell the person in front of me to get out of the way so I can walk past".

If they can make them look like Ray-Bans or some other classic, timeless design, fine. Anything else, no thanks.

Agreed. Something more modern that wouldn't have the world pointing at me when I'm standing in line for coffee wearing these.

Tim Cook is right. Augmented reality is the one out of the two which is more likely to be successful. I know this is probably a poor comparison, but just look at how popular Pokémon GO was, and how popular the Snapchat filters are and how widely they're used by the average person. Again, that's probably a laughable comparison to anyone reading this, but if the average consumer uses those two then they're far more likely to use more advanced (and useful) AR in the future. As for VR, I don't think people want to be wearing bulky headsets. You are also stuck 'in' that world, compared to AR which is more focused on the outter world and seems far more flexible.

VR will be most successful first. Gaming consoles and Android manufacturers are already getting serious about VR. AR will be successful too, but there is nothing like complete immersion you get with VR.

Have you been chewing on this? I've got a lightning cable I got with my launch day iPhone 5 and it's still functional and not even half as shredded as that.

Yes I aways chew my cables, but only when pluged into the mains.
Plus your cable should not be shredded at all

contact lenses please.
thx

That's the direction products like this are probably headed. I don't think I'd want to be one of the early adopters of an electronic object that you put in your eye, though.

If you have Netflix and haven't checked out this episode of Black Mirror yet, give it a spin. It's set in the not-too-distant-future, but already hits scarily close to home.

If they don't include a built in camera and/or video recorder then there are no privacy issues. That was the main problem with Google Glasses.

I would like mine in a monocle form factor, please. That way I can strut around like Mr Peanut, with a look of indignant consternation on the non-Apple iGlasses folks.
I thing you'd need a top hat, cane and some spats to complete the ensemble lol That would look awesome !!!! lol

Question: AR in glasses doesn't require a camera to work, does it? If so, leaving it out might be a good step towards being received better than Google Glass.

Edit: Oops, too slow.

IMHO
The glasses will always have a bad reputation with regard to privacy issues so wont take off.

I buy everything apple, but goofy tech glasses is where I draw the line.

you are crazy, this is going to be bad ass. Think about walking through an amusement park like Disney World with an overhead map displaying in the air in front of you showing you where you are then you ask Siri "take me to space mountain" and it shows you where it is in relation to where you are... Or you go to a large mall and ask "siri, show me where the Apple store is".

Or years later it is connected to public databases with facial recognition... you are walking down the sidewalk and a stranger is walking toward you... the facial recognition flags his face and tells you he is a known felon so you know to avoid him...

so many possibilities for this.

I've personally lost a lot (if not all) faith in Apple to actually produce anything that isn't now over priced (even for them) and not insanely limited on functionality. Everything Apple does nowadays just seems.... incomplete.

AppleWatch + Glasses + AirPods could be the 1-2-3 punch that gradually replaces the iPhone…
…except that the Apple Watch, the AirPods and the allegedly the Glasses are all developed to require an iPhone to work.

But does it come with an iTopHat and an iCane?

This sounds like when they tested touch screen Macs. Haven't they said publicly they thought glasses were the wrong place for wearable technology?

Because they're new and we're used to products like the iPhone which have been refined over 10 years.

If this is true (and not part of a head up display for the Apple in-car nav) I think this could be another "Newton" moment for Apple.

But they haven't released it! At least they're testing the idea, secretly, privately. If there's anything of value, they can see if it makes sense as a product, or perhaps elements make sense in other products.

For **** sake the negativity on this forum is ridiculous...

As part of its effort to expand further into wearable devices, Apple is working on a set of smart glasses, reports Bloomberg. Citing sources familiar with Apple's plans, the site says the smart glasses would connect wirelessly to the iPhone, much like the Apple Watch, and would display "images and other information" to the wearer.

Apple has contacted potential suppliers about its glasses project and has ordered "small quantities" of near-eye displays, suggesting the project is in the exploratory prototyping phase of development. If work on the glasses progresses, they could be released in 2018.

Google Glass
Apple's glasses sound similar to Google Glass, the head-mounted display that Google first introduced in 2013. Google Glass used augmented reality and voice commands to allow users to do things like check the weather, make phone calls, and capture photographs. Apple's product could be similar in functionality.Google Glass was highly criticized because of privacy concerns, and as a result, it never really caught on with consumers. Google eventually stopped developing Google Glass in January of 2015.

It is not clear how Apple would overcome the privacy and safety issues that Google faced, nor if the project will progress, but Apple CEO Tim Cook has expressed Apple's deep interest in augmented reality multiple times over the last few months, suggesting something big is in the works. "AR can be really great," he said in July. "We have been and continue to invest a lot in this. We're high on AR in the long run."

Past rumors have also indicated Apple is exploring a number of virtual and augmented reality projects, including a full VR headset. Apple has a full team dedicated to AR and VR research and how the technologies can be incorporated into future Apple products. Cook recently said that he believes augmented reality would be more useful and interesting to people than virtual reality.

The privacy issues will upset folk. I think this will be difficult to overcome.
#ThatCreepyPersonFilmingMyDaughterWithoutAsking

The Disney idea is a good idea maybe if they were handed out and given back after visit.
Also supermarkets for finding items, again on loan.

I've always thought these glasses things were a solution looking for a problem.

There are always specialist use needs, but as a general every day item for the masses? I remain to be convinced.

Stay tune for tomorrow's article about Apple pushing this to 2030 and then stay tune the day after that for the Apple Killed "Smart Glass project" because is not apple like to innovate....
