ONCE AGAIN, Apple no longer leaders NOW only followers - just playing catch-up.

get real. the entire modern tablet market is a sea of companies copying the ipad, which was nothing at all like previous tablets of the time by HP and others (basically notebook PCs).

microsoft's cover and surface suck. apple's will, as always, work better. get used to it, no matter how much it hurts you inside.

What this author is attempting to explain is that ARC ( Automatic Reference Counting ) is a form of "life cycle management of objects", as is Garbage Collection.

The differences between ARC and Garbage Collection, however, aren't really worth discussing in the original context, and the description 'a form of garbage collection' will suffice.
( If you are an iOS developer than presumably you know the difference already )

Unfortunately the author's lust for pedantry outweighs their ability to comprehend contextual appropriateness.

Yes, I'm gonna say it, they are an unashamed pedantphile !

I know what you're saying but, really, it's a lot different and I really dislike the garbage collection paradigm. So, ARC being a 'form of garbage collection' is offensive to me. :)

I disagree. This is a cop-out. Making up your own spelling and grammar just makes those who do it look ignorant.

If someone were to make up their own spelling and grammar, as in your example, then their audience would not understand what they were intending to communicate.

A failure to communicate with your intended audience is most certainly a failure, regardless of whether or not they used accepted spellings/grammar.

However, what I tried to explain, and apologies for not getting the point across to you the first time, is that if the author succeeds in communicating their intended meaning then they have succeeded.

And if they use contemporary spellings, idioms, grammar, ascii art, memes, CAPITALIZATION, intentionl tpyos, pop-culture references,.... if they manage to use all those fashionable elements and STILL communicate their intended meaning then they are a super language wizard of supreme craftsmanship ( in my eyes ).

To me the ignorant person is the weary bell-curve peak who is still dutifully applying some simplistic ruleset they learnt decades ago at school, before the Internet was even discovered!

Please accept my apologies, and thank you for pointing out the difference, I spent an hour reading up on both ARC and GC as a result :)

I'd take it a step further with "the my <favorite tech company> is better than yours" rhetoric is tiresome... I read it here from Mac/iOS nerds and I hear it at the office from Linux/Android nerds...

At the end of the day, it just a ****ing phone/tablet/computer and these companies don't need to be defended by a bunch of whiny nerds...

I cringe when I read forums (any forums!)... But yet I still read them... so it is my fault if I'm annoyed....

I echo the sentiment; annoyed by those who play the "Right wrong" game without taking any type of unique or interesting perspective, and then annoyed with myself for being annoyed in the first place.

Speaking personally, I'm a fan of whatever is the best on the market. Most of the time, that's Apple, but not always. When microsoft released their keyboard cover and that impressive ad campaign my first thought was, "Here we go. It's finally happened. Microsoft is innovating over Apple."

But just like with the Samsung watch. these other companies are innovating faster in terms of product release date, not in terms of product quality. I tested out one of microsoft's keyboard covers and the keyboard was absolutely abysmal. Again, great on a TV ad. Not at all enjoyable to use.

So while I'm disappointed at Apple's rate-of-releasing-cool-new-****, I can bank on Apple's quality of design and enjoyability of use. Even if their iWatch comes out after Samsung's -- and even if their iGlasses come out after Google Glass -- as long as Apple continues to make products that people love to use they'll blow the competition out of the water.

At the same time, Apple's complacence (rate of innovation) arrogance ("We're only gonna do it one way and you better like it") may bite them in the ass and may also be one of the reasons why Google stock just surpassed $1000 and AAPL dipped from $700 down to $400.

But I keep going to Best Buy and giving everyone a fair chance to impress me beyond Apple's offerings. So far, the only thing that's done it is a Samsung Galaxy Camera. When Apple brings a 20X zoom to one of their products, or a production quality stereo Microphone, that's when I'll be celebrating.

I see what you're saying, but I do see meaning and information being lost even though I can guess what the broad strokes are. I do not believe language doesn't evolve, but not every case of barely comprehensible writing is justifiable by language evolution arguments.

Am I supposed to be seeing sponsored posts even if I'm logged in?

I see them as well, but what really makes me laugh is that they are too clever for their own good.
I'm not sure how, but they must have knowledge of what products I have googled and looked for on Amazon recently, so +10 points for being smart, but unfortunately -100 for not being smart enough to know I've already bought the product.

Example 1: I was interested in purchasing one of those Leap Motion Controllers, did some googling, and bought one. Then for weeks all the adverts were for the Leap Motion Controller.... well I don't want 2 of them :(

Example 2: A few days ago I purchased 2 pairs of Crocs shoes ( I like to be a bit of a trend setter ) and now all the sponsored adverts are for Crocs.

Its like the Internet has worked out exactly what it is that I DON'T want anymore and is trying to convince me otherwise.

Yeh, great, thanks, I'll just click on the advert and buy a couple more pairs of Crocs, I'll wear them on my hands when I'm playing with my 50,000 Leap Motion Controllers !

I remember when Steve Jobs was up on stage and he said 'for people who don't want to use the virtual keyboard, we have an alternative' and people cheered! :D

The huge market for keyboard cases and covers is a big sign for Apple to do an integrated solution. I think it's going to happen tomorrow.

There was a different situation back then. The iPad was just released, typing with a virtual keyboard was an unproven concept, so people obviously worried and the ability to buy a "real" keyboard was very important to those who worried.

It then turned out most people actually didn't need one, and didn't buy one. The keyboard was not offered for people to buy it, but to make people feel safe. Like an insurance policy.

Well, this is the first time (that I know of) Apple would copy Microsoft implementation.

ready your photocopier cupertino.
What's interesting is that the magnet connection came from Apple, and I said what Microsoft came out with sounds like something I saw an Apple patent for. Apple may have licensed the use of parts of it because they knew it would pale in comparison to what they were working on.

"But if Apple did this I'd bet it would be better than Microsoft's implementation."

So typical - pooh-poohed when Microsoft puts it out BUT deemed brilliant when Apple takes it market.

The fanboyz rhetoric is tiresome, ain't it.

And what exactly do you expect on a Apple rumor forum? Perhaps fans of Apple? And this just in - water is wet.

I agree with you, but I'm not convinced that writing needs to be justified at all, not if it passes the 'being meaningful' test. That's just my opinion, and I can see your point of view.

The original comment I was replying to, because I felt a bit outraged, was criticising what someone had written, not on the level of meaning, but on the level of spelling and grammar. And I felt it had an implicit assumption that if the spelling/grammar could be shown to be idiosyncratic than the meaning should be automatically devalued.

Forgive me for using using a phrase from your previous message as an example:

> "I do not believe language doesn't evolve..."

* Well this double negative is inelegant and would be better replaced with one of the following phrases, each of which, while no less ambiguous, is less prone to error if the reader is skimming the text

1) "I believe language evolves..."
2) "I believe that language sometimes evolve..."
3) "I have no firm belief as to whether language evolves..."

I'm pretty sure that you meant number 1, although I feel there is a slim possibility that you could have meant 3, but my point is that your spelling and grammar were perfect, but the meaning could have been clearer.

haha that's not fair, he seems a nice enough guy and is a hell of a lot more interesting then zzzzzzzzzzzz Cook is!

Though not nearly as entertaining as Balmer, lol. He's one I'm going to miss from Youtube clips!

There was technically nothing revolutionary between 2001 and 2007, and 2007-2010 either., besides the macbook air. With the iWatch and the television set in the pipeline, apple has the opportunity to reinvent two industries in the next couple years. Tim Cook has only been CEO for 2 years, so I think it's a little unfair to judge him at this point.

So, nothing revolutionary bettween 2001 and 2010?

Not the laptop aluminum case (and the MBA, which you already mentioned)??
Not the iPad??
Not the iPhone??
Not the iPod touch or iOS??
Hell, even AppleTV was a good start (they just never took it anywhere)

These are all REALLY different from, say, iPad mini, or gold iPhones. The difference is pretty clear to me!

I personally don't see why the constant "pi$$ing match"... Who cares who does it "first" or who thought of it and then who made it better. I couldn't give a large-rodents posterior who invents what. I use what I use for what I need it for. I'm the consumer... it's not my job to worry about whether the product was the first one go have xyz feature.

it doesn't "double" for anything, it's a keyboard dock, so it has a 30-pin connector which allows you to plug in for data/sync/charge.

Of course it does. It could be, just a keyboard, which it isn't.

Apple only made it for the 1st gen iPad, they changed the form factor w/ipad 2 and never released another dock for any iPad, mainly because people barely bought the first dock, didn't sell well, and many third party options became available.

Yes. And none of the 3rd party options actually does what it does, I was kind of disappointed that they didn't update it actually.

Why are so many people like you are ******** in this thread?

IMO, the problem with Microsoft's keyboard wasn't functionality but price.

Also Apple's expectations for products is generally higher since they make logical leaps and marketing is generally in line with products. So I think the higher expectations are well deserved. Although, they do have occasional misses.

I meant the years between the timeframes I mentioned. 2001 (iPod), 2007 (iPhone), 2008 (unibody MacBooks), and 2010 (iPad) were innovative. That leaves about 6 years without much innovation. What I'm saying is that people shouldn't expect a revolutionary product every year, and based on rumors, the pipeline looks good.

If Apple does this, they are HUGE hypocrites. Apple needs Jobs and Forstall back.

I'm okay with them being hypocritical.

Jobs was opposed to iTunes for Windows and third party apps on the iPhone. Imagine where Apple would be if he got his way or refused to change his mind.

Companies need to constantly change in order to stay in tune with the market. I believe that is far more important than "not being a hypocrite".

It just said Apple has been considering a keyboard case, not that it was coming out. Apple prototypes many things that never see the light of day.

But if Apple did this I'd bet it would be better than Microsoft's implementation. Apple obsessive iterates before releasing things. They are not perfect but have a much better track record with hardware than anyone else.

Apple HAS BEEN obsessively meticulous in the past, but lately the pattern is exactly the opposite. More and more products with embarrassing issues.
