Of course they're testing giant iPhones. Why else do you think they've managed to avoid releasing one for so long?

now everyone is going to cry that they don't want a screen this large even though no one is putting a gun to their head to buy one.

options are good!!

bring on the bigger screen.

if it's an option!

i don't want a phone that big, i just hope they keep the smaller option

I dont mind a bigger screen, just as long as they find a nice balance between a bigger screen and better battery. If they can do that then Im in.

The one thing about the Galaxy phone is that the battery life is HORRIBLE. Hopefully Apple doesnt make that mistake.

It used to be called "iPhone Math", wasn't it?

I'd love to see a bigger screen on the iPhone. I think the ideal screen size for me is 4.5", the current size just doesn't cut it anymore.

I've used my brothers Galaxy Nexus and I find it's an adequate screen size, not super big, and not tiny either..

If Apple made a phablet, I bet it would be 5.7" with a resolution of 1536x1024 (half a retina iPad mini).

By some weird coincidence, Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 sports a 5.7" screen, exactly half the size of the iPad mini screen, even though it has a completely different display technology and resolution. But of course, Samsung would never spy on Apple to know what product they're working on.

You guys are missing the whole concept of what Apple is doing.

Again, they are skating to where the puck is. People are making fewer and fewer voice calls. I for one would take unlimited LTE data (no caps) for a pay-per-minute phone plan. I have thousands of rollover minutes through AT&T that I will never ever use, yet I accumulate them monthly.

The 6" iPhone is a response to the fact that many of us no longer talk on our phones, but communicate through text, web, social media, video chat, etc.

You look idiotic holding a 6" "phone" to your ear. It's unwieldy for constant phone use and doesn't make sense for anything but data-based applications.

Enter the iWatch. Pair your iWatch to your 6" iPhone. No need to pull your 6" phone our of your pocket and look like a moron. Your data input, web surfing, etc is done on the face of the phone. Menial tasks like voice calls are done with the iWatch when paired with your iPhone.

Skating to where the puck is people...

After reading dozens of complaints about using a big phone and various sexual references, this post is at least intelligent. But you're giving Apple too much credit.

EVERYONE is missing the point of this article. The ONLY reason this article exists today, from no less than WSJ, is because Samsung just announced the 5.7" Note 3 yesterday. This is Apple's way of telling any existing iPhone users who want a larger phone to wait. But another year?

I don't think it works this time.

Agree on getting the balance right. Disagree on the galaxy battery life. My S4 gets around the same as my i5 with the same sort of usage. I get a day out of the S4, could get longer if I wasn't using it so much. The 5 was no different. From my experience neither is better than the other. For smart phones they are both decent when it comes to battery life.

Great. Just what we need. A phone you can't type effectively on with one hand.

When you're out and about, often carrying stuff in one hand (food, drink, etc), it's really nice to be able to type out URLs, texts, etc, with a single thumb. Mousepad sized phones are all but unusable in situations like that.

Boo.
Nobody force you to buy one, nobody saying that it should be the only size. Be happy with tiny screen, but let others to have different opinions please.

I am so ready for a larger screened iPhone. I don't want 6 inches but a 4.5-5 inch screen with edge to edge glass would set the mobile phone on fire. Time to launch this.

It wasn't very along ago people on this site thought anything larger than the current 3.6"/4" screens on the iPhone were "too big" already.

How times have changed.

They've most likely been prototyping bigger screens for more then a few years. And without doubt over the last year. You'd have to be very naive to think they haven't built bigger screened prototypes.

You will look just as dumb talking to a watch as you would talking to 6 inch phone maybe worse.

Not in 3 years.

Sadly, this sounds more or less like what Samsung just released (Note 3 paired with Galaxy Gear watch). Not sure how well this will go over.

Except Apple has a VERY well established mobile user base with a rapid upgrade cycle. Which will make for more compatible devices for the watch in the user base itself.

Thank you for being one of the two intelligent comments I've seen in this thread thus far.

Thanks.

I doubt anyone is missing anything. We are all enthusiasts here.

Skating to the puck? Leave that to the Montreal Canadiens, they do it with elan.

Apple?

They've got their hands full just catching up after an extended period of profit taking and resting on their laurels. :D

You missed a Jobs keynote where he spoke specifically about skating to where the puck will be. He said it after announcing the iPhone. I suggest you think about your responses before making asinine ones.

I say false rumour.

APple has always said that the current size is perfect, and they stayed true to that this long. But if they were to change, i doubt they'd jump straight up to 4.8-6" size. 4.5 would be the better choice, for a lot of phone users more than 4.5 is too big.

Unfortunately, Apple is too late for some, and they are no doubt losing some customers by not having a larger phone at least as an option. As others have alluded to, I rarely hold a phone up to my ear any more. I want a larger screen on my phone, and quite honestly the Galaxy Note 3 is VERY enticing to me. I am going to wait until iOS7 comes out to test drive it on my iPhone 5, and I will do the same with the Galaxy note 3. If iOS 7 by itself doesn't keep me in the ecosystem then I have a feeling I will be switching to a Note 3. I very much want to stick with the iPhone because it is a fantastic device, but there is so much more it could be with a larger screen. If they would at least announce the intentions of producing such a phone in the next 6 months as a "one last thing", I very likely would stick with my iPhone until then. If not, I'm not going to look back.

yep....... I really dont see why Apple cant have 2 or 3 new phones on the market Iphone $200, iphone Mini $100, and a budget iphone free on 2 year contracts, one thing I like about android is selection

O.K you got my attention with this.

I'm surprised Apple didn't do this sooner.

My iPhone 3G may have a worthy update in the horizons...

Wait. What if this is going to be the distinction between the 5c and the 5s? For all we know, the next iPhone could very well be the iPhone 6. After all, this is a Jobs-less Apple. (Remember new iPads haven't been released yet too. Also "un-Apple" like.)

How is the lack of iPad update yet unApple like?

They released the last model last fall, and added 128GB option in the spring.

The 5S will have some extra features that the 5C will not have, will be thinner, and with the metal/glass body will signify it's the premium model.

I think the Samsung approach of super-sizing phones is misguided. The goal should be to make the mobile phone as small as possible and allow for easy linking to a TV, computer monitor or display when you want to browse the Internet or watch videos. My ideal set-up would be a minimalist headset & clip-on phone (the size of an iPod nano). Instead of trying to combine the functions of a phone and tablet they should keep the devices separate. Just my two cents.

How about the iPad mini with phone capabilities? Just wondering...
