Camera optics are unfortunately hard to minimize if you want good image quality; the laws of physics are fickle.

But what is there to stop Apple to increase overall iPhone thickness by a few mm so the camera optics do not stick out so much? I am sure the physics won’t mind. 😉

This new-old design looks nice, but not a deal-breaker for me, as we do not even see the backs of our iPhones.

The camera bump is the ONLY reason I buy a phone case. I don't want it resting on the lens when I put it on a table, and don't like the imbalance.

Just make the camera flush with the bump, and I'm happy to accept a fat phone. This is especially true if the battery was equally thick.

because big bump is a pro feature now
Seeing how much of the 14 Pro's video/photo capabilities are possible with the $799 15's dual-camera setup, I do wonder if Apple's insistence on 1 camera on SE, 2 on the mid-tier, and 3 for the Pros is just as much product segmentation and marketing as it is a technical necessity.

Surely, Apple wants you to see and feel the heft of the "real" camera you get when you spend $999+.

Without the size and heft of the triple-camera setup, would we really appreciate how "Pro" the $999+ iPhones are? I don't think so.

I think Apple could make the triple-camera setup completely or much more flush with the back. But they opt to make it protrude to make you see and feel the big, "expensive" "full, digital camera" you get when spending more.

The issue with this design is how will it work for cases. You're going to have a square hole filled by half a bump on the back for the flash is exposed.

Unless of course you have a separate hole for the flash.

Much more elegant than the current solution IMO, always loved iPhone X's design.

But definitely not critical, as a caseless individual, what's more important to me are the colors - really hope those aren't the final ones.

Personally always preferred white / silver / black tones, can't get myself using a phone that looks like a piece of candy.
Fingers crossed for a neutral color with a silver / white bumper (the black one chips off very visibly)

That's actually the reason I'm sticking to my 13 mini starlight, would've upgraded to 15 otherwise (thought about getting the pro, but it's too heavy for me)

I am just trying to imagine the pocket lint and other crud building up between the two lenses...

Thats they way the case on my XR is and its never bothered me.

I'm not a fan of it at all, you also get more lint into the case as the back of the phone is exposed from the case. The raised square Apple have been using for the past number of years did at least seem designed to fit a case well.

This just reminds be of the bodge of having an iPad Air in a Magic Keyboard.

Thats basically what my XR looks like, but I'm almost never looking at the back of my phone. However, I do look at that side of my iPad Pro when it is closed so I can see where it might bother you; I think having access to the Magic Keyboard is an acceptable tradeoff. I feel like Apple can't win sometimes because had they made an iPad Air specific MK, there would be a bunch of "Apple hates the environment" or "Apple is forcing me to buy a new MK for my iPP" complaints. People would probably complain if the iPad Air had a square bump just to fill that space. #forcedobsolescence #ewaste #magickeyboardgate

Contrary to the way Apple markets the iPhone, the camera is not the key feature of a cellphone. Connectivity and clarity of phone calls are.
When the iPhone launched sure, but back then people tended to have point and shoot cameras, but these days messaging is a very common method of communication and phones have replaced point & shoots so camera quality is important. Besides if you are using AirPods (or other BT headphones) instead of EarPods then call clarity is less important than convenience.

The camera bumps are a downside to my 15Pro. The phone is always in a tilted position when laying on a table and I think I set it down on top of something and check.

They also make the phone very unbalanced for one-handed use, and I have dropped the phone several times because the weight tilts it backward out my hand.

"Clarity is less important than convenience."
Not to me. The reverse, in fact.

It's obvious for any photographer. A smaller camera is never better. You want the largest possible sensor, lens, etc. I don't get this obsession
It should also be obvious for any photographer that the difference in glass between an iPhone and a regular camera is an uncrossable gap. Even a tiny 100g lens would be way too heavy for a phone. Huge sensor is fine.

The bokeh quality of my 14 Pro Max is the worst I have seen; worse than any kit lens. I suppose the reason I notice it with this phone is because it is actually possible to put something out of focus.

Instead of bulking up the optical equipment, smartphones are better served by using techniques like stacking and AI.

Apple’s computational photography tends to make images look over pressed and worse, not better.

Finally they work on thinning out that nasty tumor on the back. Ever since the 6, I hated the back of the phone not being flush. I prefer a thicker phone that doesnt wobble on the table as i type. Im suprised no one has created a MagSafe BackPlate to just magnetically attach to the back of the phone to make that nasty bump flush. If my original iPhone SE got a decent battery life and software updates... Still the best iPhone design IMO
They're not going to do that because Apple DOES NOT RESPECT CONSUMERS;

A bigger battery would mean you keep the phone for longer. Not happening cuz they will do everything possible to FORCE YOU to buy a new phone as often as possible

People will complain about the increased thickness anyway... but for some stupid reason they have no problem with their gargantuan size and their pockets looking like this:
