The problem is the 3.5mm jack isn't really considered an old standard. I know it's been around for decades, but the 3.5mm headphone jack is the de-facto analogue audio port across not only phones, but virtually all technology that uses analogue audio over the last several decades.
And there's been no suitable alternatives that have been presented. There's nothing wrong with coming up with digital standards, and try moving forward with them as well, But no matter what, at some point, audio must be turned into analogue signal to be heard. And it's generally easier to do this in your device, and not externally. So that's why the 3.5 mm jack is still needed today. At least until the entire world decides to change their analogue audio ports together.
