Why does your thread sound phony. It sounds as if you are a professional writer just blasting Apple. You sure covered a lot of bases in a few paragraphs. Who do you work for?

The guy can't have an opinion?

By the way, even though not in the near future, that's where things seem to be headed: users will have dumb terminals and all the heavy work will be done in the cloud. Of course, we'll be charged for everything.

Even Steve Jobs' analogy of trucks and cars indicates that's where they are going.

Apple recycle program offered me $1660 Apple gift-card for my 08 3.2GHz 8-Core Mac Pro and I willing to take that too and put it towards the 2010 Mac Pro been saving up for a New mac every sense I purchase my Mac Pro back in Feb of 08 and today have enough to buy a New Mac Pro and a 27" inch LED but the question is should I do it? or should I just upgrade my 08 with ATi 5870 (if the 5870 fits and works in my 08 MP) and add more ram and wait until next year to buy a new Mac Pro what do you guys think? need your honest opinion.

My 2008 Mac Pro spec's

3.2GHz Dual Quad Core (8-Core)
Two 500GB HD
Air Port Extreme
512MB Nvidia Geforce 8800GT
4GB of Ram
Two SuperDrives

Personally I'd just stick with what you have now, I dont really see the 12 core as much of an upgrade from where you are at. Just get the new video card and more ram and go with your bad self!

This is a HUGE upgrade from my dual G5 and sadly apple recycling will only give me $176 for mine. So It looks like this will just become a network server or something along those lines.

What are you guys doing with your old Dual G5's?

I too have been waiting a LONG time to upgrade my dual G5s (still the prettiest interior on any computer I've encountered by far). I may leave it as a movie server somewhere in the home. Streaming DVDs anyone? ;)

I'm pretty sure Final Cut will remain a "Pro" application. This situation is just like a month ago, when everyone was CONVINCED that the Mac Pro was NEVER going to be updated. Yet again, they were proved wrong.

If you ask me, we WILL see a new FCS this year and it will be 64 bit, along with some other great features. Sure, a big part of Apple now are the "iProducts", but at the same time, haven't ALL of the Mac products been updated this year except for one?

Updating all of their Mac products except for one doesn't sound like Apple is giving up on the Mac to me. Of course, all the drama queens on here would make you think differently...

Agree. Just because it takes a while doesn't mean it's going to be dropped.

What is this dropping of support for DVD studio that somebody mentioned? I can't believe this.

Final Cut Pro is too good an application to be dropped. It was a game changer, and I think Apple's just waiting with the update to deliver something really good.

We had to wait longer for 64-bit Photoshop, so what's the big deal waiting a bit longer for 64-bit Final Cut Pro.

Yes, they have- but they've been pretty mediocre. Especially this Mac Pro update... I can just imagine the keynote for this thing, if Steve had done one:

The new graphics cards are great. There's also the option to have an SSD disc as a start-up disc. And new processors.

At this point I'm becoming more interested in when 3rd party ram will be available so I don't have to break the bank via Apple on ram upgrades. I'll probably go 3rd party SSD while I'm at it. No real reason to overpay.

doesn't it use the same ram as last year's model?

The higher end models (3.33x6, 2.66x12, 2.93x12) can use 1333MHz DDR3 now. Apple limited it all to 1066MHz last year, although the top 3 models then also supported it, so there isn't any Mac Pro certified memory at those speeds.

Thanks - good to know.

There are plenty of good reasons to have 12 processor cores, but running Microsoft Word (btw, get Pages) and iTunes at the same time is not one of them.

EDIT -
"The new Mac Pro. It's so fast, red looks blue."

Have to agree that Microsoft's products are not the prime candidates for 12-core goodness. I'll be rockin' the new Adobe Suite, though.

Meanwhile, your new tagline spells trouble for the design demographic...

A better slogan than "the fastest mac Ever!"

"Fast Mac is fast." BOOM.

A MUCH more honest and realistic slogan would be..
--"The Fastest Mac, Eventually, when we get around to it...."

I just hope ALL of them will have the hardware capability of loading dual SSD's into EACH drive-bay... Four 512MB drives in the first two slots, RAID-Zero as a group, for SPEED... then MIRROR that goup onto one Seagate Barracuda 1TB in slot three, and mirror that onto Seagate Barracuda 1TB in slot four.... "Sufficient Redundancy!!!"

Now, if only all of this was affordable! :-//

Even Steve Jobs' analogy of trucks and cars indicates that's where they are going.

My, that's a depressing thought/prognostication... ;-?

To add to the scenario, I predicted---about 15 years ago, with the discussion then of a "Clipper Chip" hardwired "back door" for ALL computers, that "real soon now" we'd all be in "lock-down mode", sort of like living at Alcatraz--with fresh-air and sunlight on alternate Wednesday afternoons----at the warden's discression... So start planning (or digging!) now!! ;-}

"Real soon now"---starting with my new MacPro tower---alongside my MacBook... I'll be keeping my REAL life, photos, writings, files,software.... on the MacPro as a TOTAL STAND_ALONE SYSTEM...

Never *ever* to be upgraded by going online, EVER!!! Use "sneaker-net" to transfer files, and be DAMNED suspicious of Apple updates.... Disable wireless, enable File-vault, and anything else I can do to increase shielding... Perhaps a Faraday cage too...? hmm..... ;-}}}

And then have a "throw away" Mac laptop for "normal" online Internet actvities, and---if I can keep up with the monthly online fees!--- working perforce "in the cloud"---but add a HELL of a lot of strong-encryption to [try to] ensure some degree of privacy in email and one-on-one communications, P2P, chat, etc...

This is something like a mixture of Orwell's "1984" with a bit of William Gibson's "Johnny Mnemonic" thrown in....

Connected to a relatively hostile online environment, the ONLY safe place is the computer "stand alone" inside yer' SKULL---now, where did I misplace those dilithium crystals I was planning to install next week??? ;-}}

Is this paranoid fantasy, or a valid prediction of "The Things to Come"?

I hope the 5870 is available as an upgrade kit then too!

One of the "Chatty Kathy" types who love chitter chatting with Apple Employees could do us a HUGE FAVOR and ask this very question.

When will 5770 and 5870 be available separately?

I'm gonna guess they'll make us wait...gotta give the Paying Customers with New Pro's a reason to plunk down the capital.

You can always jump onto the online chat and see if you can coax them into telling you. Since they were happy to divulge the 9th date.

But yes, I think they'll give priority to new Mac Pro purchasers - get them out of the door first then serve those who just want parts.

Apple Recycle

I for one am excited about the new MP's. I'm using Apple's Recycle program and getting rid of my 2.8 Extreme Imac (est. $650 bucks) and going for the quad core 2.8 MP.

Once I use that and my Company discount the MP will be a good machine for several years to come. I'm going this route because I want the ability to update the HD's, CD's, Memory, and whatever else that I can't easily do in the Imac.

Could you imagine if they put that accessiblity in the Imac that they have in the new Mini?

Their estimate of the market value is ridiculous.

It's like Mr. PC is giving estimates on how much an Apple computer is worth.

I think you can get much more by selling your iMac on the open market (craigslist & Co).

As for other uses for the PCI Express slots, the Mac Pros have practically everything standard. Except for additional non-existent graphics cards since Steve Jobs restricts that, what else is left to install?

Give me some ideas. I can't think of too many things honestly off the top of my head that I'd add to any of the Macs.

- UAD-2 (audio DSP)
- eSata

comes to mind.

so is there any reason to think that it is not order day Monday?

Sure. August has 31 days. 4 are already gone. So there 27 possibilities remain. If all we know is it's coming in August, there is a 96% chance it won't come Monday.

That's "any reason." I can come up with others, if you'd like.

I meant do we think this was a credible rumor.

This ISN'T as rumor. I talked with a friend at Apple yesterday and Monday IS the day Mac Pro will be available for order!

I'm not saying I don't believe it (I do), but an anonymous poster on a message board saying that a friend told him it's true doesn't make it any less of a rumor.

OK. You point is well taken. Check the store Monday.:)

I will! Looking forward to ordering a 12-core (though I want to wait and see how the chips are mounted to see if future upgrades will be as difficult as on the present 8-core.)
I've been waiting to order since the MARCH rumor. If it's not available Monday, you can go to the Golden Gate bridge and watch me jump. :)
