Well then I would make a very loud scene in the apple store and let them know what pricks they are.

Aaaand you would be kicked out of the store and you would look like a whiney child. You don't get what you want by acting like a brat. The world does not revolve around you. Grown up.

You have 14 days to return and 30 days to price match.

"Hey apple store guys, i bought a glassy mbp in the summer because I really wanted a mac, but had not choice about getting matte. I was forced into buying this because I needed a notebook, and now that you are offering matte I cannot get a replacement? So I should have bought lenovo?"

- Yep!

You would get the same treatment from your vaunted Lenovo if they came out with a new feature past your return date. Get over it.

No, the world revolves around giant companies like apple screwing over people so that they can make billions of dollars.

As a customer I have a right to complain about something like this, especially when it is a matter of eyestrain and usability that was drastically compromised due to a cheap decision on apples part. For the millions they made from only offering glassy to us poor suckers they can afford to rectify my case. If you think otherwise you are a fool.

Well thats the point of being a business. To maximize your profits. You seem to think that Apple is some kind of charity that is subservient to your demands. They are a business and their objective is to make money. If their actions are causing a loss of overall profit, they will change those actions. The complaints of one person do not affect the tens of thousands of happy people (estimates are probably way off).

I did not say you don't have the right to complain. I believe you do. In fact, Apple has a page devoted to sheer feedback.

You do not have the right to be heard however and you certainly do not have a right to be allowed to make a scene in a store. Apple does not have to listen to rants and they can and probably will ask you to leave if you try it. I should also add, that making a scene makes you look like an immature brat and not worthy of sympathy. Your attitude goes a long way to garnishing respect.

You purchased the machine voluntarily. If it is incompatible with your preference, it's your own fault for buying it. Nothing about eye strain or usability has been "drastically compromised" by anyone, nor is the decision "cheap"--the cost of the glass is comparable to or more expensive than the cost of an anti-glare finish. Positioning yourself to avoid reflection is trivially easy in most rooms, since the reflection only occurs at a specific angle. Notice how all the photographs are taken from off-center viewing angles, either horizontal or vertical, to show the "evil" reflections? You can find plenty of similar photos showing the poor color and contrast performance of matte screens under bright lighting and outdoors, or even showing intense reflections indoors.

Don't be a drama queen. If it was that big a deal to you, you were mistaken to buy a machine that didn't meet your obviously strong preference. Throwing a tantrum doesn't make it anyone else's fault, nor does it mean that anyone, Apple, Lenovo, HP, is liable to provide you with a newer machine just because you like it better.

Why did you buy it then?

I'm on your side with the glossy hate but that is also why I haven't purchased one. You could have voted with your wallet or picked up a refurb matte version when they were available.

Throwing a tantrum in a store months after your purchase isn't going to solve anything beyond getting yourself thrown out and banned from a mall.

having a matte screen as an option is definitely cool. i enjoy my matte screen but often wondered what life would be with a glossy screen, but having to wear glasses ive never made the jump. Here's to apple thinking about bring it back.

Well i just bought a 13" mbp a few weeks ago, and if they came out with matte in september i would demand this be replaced with a matte version.

And the unfortunate Apple employee would roll their eyes and think to him or herself, "Damn, I hate my job sometimes."

Based on your opinion every single customer that has ever bought an electronic device only to have the new model come out 6 months later deserve a replacement or some compensation. Only a true fool would believe such a thought. Find someone like me who likes the glossy and sell it to them. Or buy the matte screen film.

Reflection happens at all angles. Refraction and diffraction causes "red eye". I think you're thinking of the angle where a majority of the light hits your face. That depends where the light is coming from.

But yes its trivial.

LOL ... So I sit off-square to my notebook? Nice solution. And FYI I've used a friends glassy MacBook Pro for several days when my older one was in for repair and if I remain square-on to the laptop, no amount of vertical rotation of the screen eliminated reflections in my office ... and I'm not even near a window! I refuse to type at an angle to my keyboard just to remove reflections: that's ultimately lame.

And by the way, every promo shot I've seen with the glassy screens in has a massive stripe of light diagonally across the screen which, if you look at the content, does affect how it looks more than I've ever previously seen a matte screen affected on 'perfectly' setup promo shots.

Sorry, but glassy/glossy screens just plain suck imo. I'm more than happy for them to remain for those for whom the contrast and brightness are a bigger win, but I can't countenance Apple removing matte as an option for that sizeable number of us for whom reflections are the bigger issue.

No, what the post you quoted was saying is that the reason all of the photos "showing" the reflections are taken off-angle is because if you sit straight on, it's a matter of turning yourself and the computer a few degrees at the most to remove reflections, unless you have bright light sources in every direction (and how many times does that truly happen where you have no control over it?). Glassy/glossy screens do not "just plain suck", as evidenced by the many people who are quite happy with them (yes, even some who are very picky), they simply aren't for everyone. Most people, even if they don't like them, though, can at least live with them.

Screen is one of 2 issues -should I take my Mac back?

The screen IS an issue for me and girlfriend. Whilst we both love the screen when watching movies in the evening (lights down), during the day the super reflective screen is a pain.

Another major issue for me is the fact there is no stereo on my 13" MBP. I noticed as soon as I played some music that the sound was biased towards the right. Apparently the problem is that Apple decided to put the 'left' speaker in the middle! Also the fact that that the subwoofer is on the right adds to the problem http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/130783-speaker-imbalance-towards-right.html

We didn't really count on spending £900 on a machine that effectively has mono sound. Since we only bought it a few days ago we can take it back (2 weeks grace). Maybe this would be the best option? I've never owned a Mac before though I trained on them at College. I must admit I was always wary of the hero-worship afforded Apple by acolytes. I was on an interactive MA course last year and got sick of the constant anti-PC jibes made by the course leader. Now my cynicism of the Maccy-Clappers seems justisfied.

I really don't understand the 'it's trivial' comments made by some on this forum about the reflections. I could forgive/ignore/work round the fact that the MBP has only 2 USB ports or that they've removed the 2 headset ports. However, the reflection thing is 'in your face' most of the time. Also, the stupid speaker placement is unforgivable really. What were they thinking? People wouldn't notice? That Macolytes would just say 'But it's a Mac!' Someone at the Applestore in Regent St, London actually said that to us when we complained that we didn't even get a sleeve included (eg like you do when purchasing a £300 netbook MSI Wind).

We are really disappointed. Most of my friends/colleagues own older Mac laptops and are surprised/shocked about the lack of choice on the screen as well as the speakers. My girlfriend loves the way this MBP it looks. I love the OSX interface/multi-function mousepad and the great battery life. However, the screen and speaker issues are kind of deal breakers. Do I take it back? Will Apple charge us a 10% restock fee so we lose £90? Will the new MBPs in September be more expensive? Will they 'fix' the screen issue AND the speaker issue?

Does the 15" suffer from the same problem?

You glossy folk suck. Why? Simple:

-- those who want matte: "Give us an OPTION for matte"
-- those who want glossy: "**** and use glossy. Glossy FTW! Matte looks like crap, no one wants it blah blah blah blah"

We're not arguing that everyone should use matte. We're saying WE want an OPTION to get the damn matte screen. I can't stand idiots telling me to shut up because matte is better and Apple did the right thing. I'm not telling you to use glossy, don't you dare to tell me what I should use. And the argument "you don't want glossy, go buy something else" is retarded. I say it again, it is retarded! If I buy an Apple (like I did; pre-damn crap unibody MBP) I want consistency over the years. Like with Thinkpads. You get a new thinkpad and it's like your old but faster, lighter, better. They don't play "what should we take away in the next revision games". When you're not giving customers any options, you should make a commitment to follow the specs. If I buy a laptop now and get bunch of accessories only to see a new revision to drop something that makes my stuff incompatible, I'd get pissed.

And it's even more true with Apple. If I use their software, I'll get used to it. So I can't switch a computer like that. (Well, I like OS X, but I can always switch to Linux and be happy with that).

Maybe Steve Jobs' ears are burning...

'Cause I was thinking about this very issue just the other day.

I need to upgrade from a desktop to a Mac Pro and I was hoping to buy a and new Mac display to go with it. But once I discovered that the only option available is glossy, my plans for a beautiful new Mac display were nipped in the bud.

Glossy just doesn't cut it for people in the graphic and photographic fields. I'm going to have to go with a LaCie 324 instead. While it's had excellent reviews and may even be the better display, it lacks the stylishness of a Mac and for me at least, that's an important part of the reason I have been a Mac user for almost two decades.

While it's good that Mac has acknowledged the problem, until they bring back the matte option on all their screens it will be too little, too late to make much of a difference for graphic intensive users.

You hit the nail on the head! :)

Less choice is not better.

Apple has an odd way of proving that statement false.

That's not true. The lack of choice is an unfortunate side effect we have to deal with if we want Apple products, not a reason why they're good. A few years ago Apple used to give consumers relatively more choice in their computer products, and their computer products then were at least as good as they are today.
