2 Years by law in the EU including UK, and must be repaired for free. Even after 2 years this item may qualify for 2+ years under item must last a reasonable amount of time under normal usage.

if you buy from John Lewis you will get a UK 2 year warranty, 5years on TVs as stated by law, most other places like Apple break the warranty law and seem to get away with it.

These prices aren't strictly for damage. They're applicable for any out of warranty repair. Once the Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare coverage expires on the unit, customers will be up for those prices for their respective issue, regardless of whether that issue comes as a result of user-inflicted damage or normal component failure.

All prices are in British pound sterling and include VAT and a £ 7.44 shipping fee, which we charge only if we need to ship your iPhone. If we need to replace your iPhone, the replacement will be new or equivalent to new. If the issue with your iPhone was caused by severe damage from an accident or from abuse, service might not be available.

I stand corrected!

I'll gamble again...$279 IF i need a screen repair without AC+ or actually spend $199 and maybe never need the screen fixed then if I did it would cost an additional $29 so a total of $228. Meh its only $51 difference. I'll take my chance.

So will you be more inclined to look after it now you know how much it costs to repair/replace?
Steve you can’t fix stupid. People that say they refuse to get AC+ are the first ones to bitch and complain after they walk into an Apple store and have to shell out 549 for dropping it because Apple won’t take care
Of them.

For $550 yes. Again, $279 for a screen repair still doesnt push the decision either way when you're paying $199 for Applcare and then $29; basically $230 already. A screen break would be a tossup to me as a good gamble not buying it and trying to save $200.

For the back glass at $550, no way. That's over half the cost of the 64gb model at $999. $99 with Applecare or $550 without is a no brainer there.

Idk why your're quoting his post to me, I am saying I AM buying it this year and saying why based on the bigger gap between nothing and Applecare this year justifying it.

So basically leave no option for consumers other than paying extra for Apple Care. And instead of realizing this scheme, people are praising Apple Care and how it saves so much money. There is no way repairs should cost that much money. Well played Apple.
I’ll be buying insurance through my mobile carrier. It’s not quite as slick as AppleCare Plus, but it’s perfectly fine.

LOL. Phone insurance is a complete rip off. That’s widely known. To each his own.

Exactly. Apple Care+ is your best friend. Remember if you crack the back glass it’s a full phone replacement (549)

Insurance is a ripoff, but AC+ is your friend? You know that AC+ is phone insurance, right?

Maybe the cost will stop idiots from mistreating their phones and encourage them to look after them like normal people seem to be able to manage?

Accidents happen. I have 4 kids and believe me, I've experienced many broken phones that weren't mistreatment.

If the AC+ prices are too high for you, there is also SquareTrade... I believe its $169 for 3 years of coverage, $99 deductible, and if you get rid of the phone sooner they will refund you a pro-rated amount.

Anyone who doesn’t buy it is either mental or just waiting for something bad to happen
Do you think Apple makes money off Apple Care? Meaning, does Apple get more revenue from selling Apple Care than it would make if people paid for repairs themselves? If yes, then getting Apple Care is, over the long run, a loss to you.

There are clearly factors that can tilt the balance:
  • Apple might make money off Apple Care because without it people would not get their phones repaired or repaired by a third-party.
  • Your personal history of destroying things (or your personal history in catching lemons) might actually be predictive and above average.
  • Not having to worry about bad surprises is more important to you than you final bank account balance.

Insurance is not Apple Care and vice versa. Look up the definition of Apple Care on apples website.

This article says that a cracked Galaxy S8 screen can cost between $270-$390 if Samsung is doing the repairs...doesn't sound like Apple's price is anything outrageous relative to the technology being used.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/what-to-do-break-samsung-galaxy-s8-screen/

"We took a cracked Samsung Galaxy S8 into a repair center to see how much it would cost to repair. We were told it would be between $270 and $390.

However, when selling its mobile care plan in South Africa, Samsung has stated that a screen repair could cost up to $780 (more than what the phone is worth in the U.S.). This repair cost is over two thirds the local recommended retail price of the S8, and over half the price of the S8+. It’s uncertain how Samsung estimated the high cost of repair."

Or just has better and cheaper phone insurance on their insurance plan and/or provider. You're actually crazy if you take AC+ when the alternatives are better and cheaper.

That’s just not true. Carrier insurance is neither better nor cheaper.

Let’s start with cost. Most carriers charge around $10/month for insurance. Over the course of 24 months, that’s $240, which is already $40 more expensive than AppleCare+. Then there are the deductible costs. Most carriers replace the whole unit, so they charge between $100-$200 deductibles. AppleCare+ only charges $29 for display damage and $99 for damage requiring a whole unit replacement. AppleCare+ is cheaper both to purchase the insurance, AND with its deductibles.

And it’s BETTER insurance for two reasons: convenience and quality. Convenience-wise, you have the option to get your phone repaired same-day at an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Repair location. Alternatively, you can get an express replacement through the mail (usually next day) by calling AppleCare. With carrier insurance, a replacement phone is mailed to you and usually takes a few days. Quality-wise, carrier options usually outsource with companies such as BrightStar and Asurion who refurbish devices with third party parts. They are known to Apple technicians as “Frankenphones” because of how badly slapped-together they are. Often the enclosure, display, cameras, etc are all after-market imitation parts that are notorious for failure or quality issues. Basically, it’s not even an iPhone. It’s half-iPhone, half fake, running iOS. With AppleCare+, you get a certified Apple replacement device that’s fully comprised of original Apple components that has a warranty.

Don’t be duped by the carriers. Their option is janky and more expensive. The ONLY benefit is that they cover lost or stolen. Cheers.

From a materials point of view, the screen costs around $200 on its own, then there's the first generation Face ID tech which won't be cheap or easy to manufacture, then along with the 64/256 storage chips and everything else onboard the device you can see why there's a hike in price. If you don't want bleeding edge tech you can get the iPhone 8 or 8+ which is essentially the third generation iPhone 6 for about £150 less.

Then don't damage it.

Better, don't buy it then.

Not getting Apple Care+ on this phone is probably not a good idea. If you end up using it once, it would pay for itself.

Hell, you could purposely break the phone near the end of the AC, get a $99 replacement, and you have a new phone to sell or use.

I used to not get Apple Care on any of my Apple Products, but that changed with my Late 2012 iMac. Being a new design, I was worried of potential issues. It ended up paying off when the fusion drive broke 12 days before the end of the AC. Although, it was giving problems for about a year prior to totally breaking.

I have used iPhones since the original, but didn't purchase it until my iPhone 6s Plus.

It end up paying off as I had the battery issue on it after the first year, and I cracked the screen a month before the AC expired.

Only if you can technically proof that it was faulty to begin with after 6 months also this is with your retailer and not Apple unless you bought it at the Apple Store.
