You know why I don’t get? Why is it $279 ($29 AC) to replace the most advanced 3X retina OLED display that Apple has ever made, but $549 ($99 AC) to replace the piece of glass on the back if it breaks? Don’t they have an equal chance of breaking, but the back piece should be way cheaper, right?

The back glass is fused to the metal frame around, so its replacing that whole piece taing the guts of the phone out.

But still, yes is is exorbitant when the 8 Plus with the same materials (per Apple's own keynote they mention that) is $399.

And before anyone says buh buh the parts are more expensive on the X; sure they are but you dont think Apple isn't repairing your broken phone and using it/selling it as a refurb? Apple isn't "losing" money after you pay them a few hundred bucks and using that device as a refurb by any means; even after repair costs. Probably making money on it in reality.

Only if you can technically proof that it was faulty to begin with after 6 months also this is with your retailer and not Apple unless you bought it at the Apple Store.

or that it didn't last a reasonable period of time (which for a £1k phone is a long time).

Every time I think Apple just can't get any more shameless with their pricing, news come and prove well yes they can. Unbelievable how greedy this company has become in the past years especially considering their massive pile of cash.

They are a business not your friend. Their sole Purpose is to extract as much money from your bank account as they can as often as they can.

Anyone who doesn’t buy it is either mental or just waiting for something bad to happen
Never bought AppleCare, don't use a case with my iPhones either.

There's a high chance Apple will just end up replacing the entire device altogether.

How do you think that pile of cash came about in the first place?

Apple is trying to become the first trillion dollar company. Amazon is quickly picking up it's pace and Alphabet is in the running too, and Apple wants to be first.

I'll gamble again...$279 IF i need a screen repair without AC+ or actually spend $199 and maybe never need the screen fixed then if I did it would cost an additional $29 so a total of $228. Meh its only $51 difference. I'll take my chance.

This is what I'm doing too. I've never bought Apple Care before on any Apple product, so I've saved hundreds (maybe thousands) and won't mind spending money on a repair if needed. But I'm very careful with my devices so hopefully I won't have any issues. :)

That’s just not true. Carrier insurance is neither better nor cheaper.

Let’s start with cost. Most carriers charge around $10/month for insurance. Over the course of 24 months, that’s $240, which is already $40 more expensive than AppleCare+. Then there are the deductible costs. Most carriers replace the whole unit, so they charge between $100-$200 deductibles. AppleCare+ only charges $29 for display damage and $99 for damage requiring a whole unit replacement. AppleCare+ is cheaper both to purchase the insurance, AND with its deductibles.

And it’s BETTER insurance for two reasons: convenience and quality. Convenience-wise, you have the option to get your phone repaired same-day at an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Repair location. Alternatively, you can get an express replacement through the mail (usually next day) by calling AppleCare. With carrier insurance, a replacement phone is mailed to you and usually takes a few days. Quality-wise, carrier options usually outsource with companies such as BrightStar and Asurion who refurbish devices with third party parts. They are known to Apple technicians as “Frankenphones” because of how badly slapped-together they are. Often the enclosure, display, cameras, etc are all after-market imitation parts that are notorious for failure or quality issues. Basically, it’s not even an iPhone. It’s half-iPhone, half fake, running iOS. With AppleCare+, you get a certified Apple replacement device that’s fully comprised of original Apple components that has a warranty.

Don’t be duped by the carriers. Their option is janky and more expensive. The ONLY benefit is that they cover lost or stolen. Cheers.

*slow clap

Thank you! Managing an Apple service provider I cant tell you how many phones we saw on a daily basis that were complete junk from phone insurance claims. Also a big thing to note is if there is any replacement programs due to defects if the phone has third party parts Apple will not touch it. Also Apple will not cover any phones with third party parts under their out of warranty replacement.

What is the point of paying £205 for AC for a £4k+ MBP when any fault that develops with the device during your ownership (3-5 years) will be covered under the Sales of Good Act. If any component fails without you physically damaging it yourself (motherboard for example) then you will get it fixed by Apple for nothing if you know what you are doing. All extended warranties are pretty redundant in the UK due to SoGA.

AC+ on the iPhone is not an extended warranty - it is insurance product it case you damage the phone yourself.

For someone sounding so knowledgeable, the SoGA was replaced by the Consumer Rights Act on 1 October 2015.

Just FYI

I know some people are saying ‘go with third party insurance’ but I thought I would share my experience with my iPhone 7.

I have my 7 though the IUP and was ready to pre order the X this morning.

Yesterday my 7 started playing up. When I woke up yesterday, it looked like it had restarted and was stuck on the Apple logo. No real problem I thought but when I looked closely at it, the Apple logo was corrupt.

Again, not too worried, I put it in to DFU mode and started to reinstall iOS through iTunes.

Whilst it was installing the screen started flickering with green characters (Matrix like!).

I was starting to get a bit worried because I’m now starting to think it’s hardware, on the day before I want to pre-order the X.

About half way through installing iOS it crashed. The progress bar was at 50% for about 40 minutes.

Now starting to panic a bit.

So I called Apple Support and we tried a few things until eventually it was bricked and the support guy said I need to take it in. I looked at my closest Apple Store and they didn’t have any appointments until Tuesday.

Now starting to think a reservation is pointless.

I decided to go to my local store, and camp out. At the Store they said if it is hardware they’d probably repair it, and it may need to be sent away depending on the diagnostics.

That’s it, I thought, game over.

After about 20 minutes a Genius called me, had a look at the phone and tried to restore again through DFU as she managed to kick it back to life-ish. It did exactly the same thing.

“I’ll get you a replacement” she said. Honestly, I could have hugged her.

And that’s why, even though it’s expensive (and if it wasn’t part of IUP), I would still buy AppleCare+

It might be expensive but you just wouldn’t get that service through a third party. It paid for itself yesterday.

And imagine trying to do that with Samsung/Google/[Insert other manufacturer here]?

That’s my story and I hope it helps if someone is not considering AppleCare.

Side note: Getting my X next Friday, with AppleCare!

And this one of the reasons why I signed up for IUP. I've always lived on the edge with every iphone previous to this one but at $279 just for the screen and $549 for anything else, that's an ouchie to the wallet if something does happen.

On the flips side, with IUP and applecare+ now I can go caseless!
IUP & AC+ is exactly why I go caseless. I will gladly spend the price of two premiums ($58) on screen repairs, then covering up my beautiful device.

The world is bigger than the USA you know

That's very true. The only cure for high prices is decreasing demand. As long as people keep buying high priced gadgets, the companies behind the gadgetry will continue to raise the prices. Apple is the sole producer of iThingies, iOS, and MacOS. If enough people simply "must" only have Apple products, they will continue to be subject to price gouging. There is much more competition with PCs and Android phones, which not only offer competition to Apple, but more importantly, among the various PC and Android producing companies themselves - hence, the lower prices and frequent hardware/software innovation.

Any concerns with the back also being glass? If that cracks, it’s a $99 premium, right?

still both are cheaper than an iPhone X replacement.

Wrong.

For a BMW 2 Series: "So I called BMW in Memphis and they wanted to charge me 1,200$ in parts alone (glass + auto rain sensors + molding + glue kit + clips and spacers)...I didn't even find out how much the in house replacement service fee was after hearing that."
