You are right.

Oh well, they are good for the developers. I mean, by offering an app for free, they are far more likely to be downloaded than one that someone has to pay for (people like free stuff). But obviously, they don't make money that way. So by including ads, they can make some money, even if it is just a little.

Oh, and they are also good for Apple. With this new program, they can get a bit of that revenue and recover some cost of hosting all these apps for people to download at their computer or even directly onto their device.

And, of course, ads are good for the advertisers. It gets their brand and/or product out there. You can't sell anything if people aren't aware of it. I mean, dear GOD Pepsi and Coke still constantly advertise. They really don't need to, we all know about them and everyone has a preference. Yet, they still do.

On a side note, it is so cute how everyone is panicing! "Apple will include ads in paid apps!" "Apple will have ads that interupt my phone functions!" *rolls eyes* There is no indication of any of that. In regards to the latter, do you REALLY think Apple is that dumb? Just because they have a pattent on something doesn't mean they are going to DO it. How many pattents do they have that they never used? It just means someone had an idea and Apple decided they wanted to own the idea.

And you know what, if there is a paid app that has ads, just put a comment on the Appstore that says "Don't by this, it has ads." I bet people will stop buying it and the developer can chose to no longer charge for the app or remove the ads and still change. Honestly though, most developers seem to know that if you are charging for something, you don't include ads.

Do you work in advertising? I ask because your view is very strange..because most people hate advertisements. People don't care if its good for a brand or makes jobs; because most brands don't care whats good for customers, they care whats good for profits (fortunately that can line up). People don't care if ads are good for anything, because generally ads are intrusive and annoying, or at the least, an eyesore, no matter where they are. Do I really need to know about another soda brand, food, or movie? I already am made aware of them when I see them on a shelf or movie listing.

Wait! you mean a developer has a chance to make money off of me? A company can try to sell me somthing? Let me line right up! Please, can I pay one dollar to whitewash the fence?

Ads never are a good thing for customers and for users. They are only good for businesses, which, frankly, should not need a ton of advertising if their product is any good and if customers were smart. Unfortunately, thats we have advertising.

I am paying for my internet access on my phone. I don't want to pay for content I don't want, even if it is unlimited data. And I don't want ads. While the iAds are better than most, they are not better than nothing.

Sorry if I took your point wrong and ranted, but I really don't like ads. I already disliked them, and I spent a few months living really really rural. I felt so much better...and I finally realized it was because I hadn't experienced an commercial, billboard, or radio ad in 5 weeks.

And between iAds and a mediocre iphone 4G and mediocre OS update, I am seriously considering switching to android. The EVO looks good to me.

And now we see the REAL reason that Flash is not allowed on the iPhone/iPad - advertising revenue (and game revenue as well)! Steve Jobs can list all the reasons he wants, but this announcement hitting so close to the "Reasons we won't allow Flash" letter tells the true story.

Before you get all up in arms, I realize that as CEO, Jobs job is to make Apple money. And he's doing a great job of that. But the Apple PR spin is staring to hurt my head.

Agreed. Apple is entitled to do this, but dont sit there and spin it as the catalyst for the decision was purely user experience. anyone without Apple blublockers on can see this.

Companies who waste their $$ on advertising on mobile phones totally waste their money imo.. Does ANYONE EVER click those stupid ads? In my whole life of owning many cell phones and macs and PCs I have never clicked single ad.. More so I never even paid 1 second of attention what that banner said..

I never click these ads either. Im sure once interactive ads are released, many will click out of curiosity sake. But how long will advertisers pay for visibility without actual sales

LMAO at people lauding Apple for not supporting Flash, because "me no likey ads".

Funny how that works eh?

I am installing an IP firewall when OS 4.0 is released and I will be blocking iAd completely, sorry Apple but you may not advertise on an device I own!

Can this be done? What about when youre on just a 3G signal?

I find it funny people hate AD's when they realize that we are walking AD's. From the cars we drive to the phones we use to the Sneakers and Clothes.

Everything has a brand name and when you wear those clothes or drive that car with the logo shows Your kind of a walking "iAd"

Isn't Apple going to eventually extend iAd to directly compete with Google? Aka apple search engine?

There better not be an ad on my iPad.
I plan on getting an iPad with 3G next week, and only if the ad will pay for my 3G access would I consider it.

The way I understand it you will have an option of getting a free version of the app which sports iAds, on the other hand if you flat out buy the app you won't see the advertising. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Seems far more fitting for the company that still has a 90% stranglehold on the computing marketplace, hmmm?

If ads get intrusive and Apple uses their patents to force ads on me then it's just another reason to jailbreak. Can't wait for someone to turn off that functionality with a jailbreak app.

I hope they use this revenue toward more powerful hardware in Macs.

And maybe move manufacturing back to Ireland?

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is reportedly looking to charge up to $1 million to companies interested in participating in the company's forthcoming iAd mobile advertising platform. Those companies looking to be launch partners could be looking at sums of up to $10 million. The rumored premium pricing agrees with previous comments made by ad agencies who have received pitches from Apple's iAd team, and confirms that Apple will be targeting major corporations for participation in the program rather than smaller entities frequently seen in mobile advertising in many apps on the iPhone today.

According to the report, Apple will be charging one cent per banner displayed and two dollars per interactive ad viewed. The report also notes that Apple itself will build the ads over the first few months in order to ensure proper functioning and aesthetics. But Apple does have plans to release a developer kit that will permit ad agencies to create their own ads down the road and submit them to Apple for approval.

While some ad directors have expressed reluctance at giving up control of ad creation during the initial stages, it hasn't stopped a reported landslide of interest from agencies, who have participated in numerous pitch sessions from Apple's iAd team around the country and have begun gearing up with ideas for their campaigns.

And as they take 40% off the top of all revenue, who said this ad-making scheme won't be profitable? :)
