I wouldn't bet on that.
Some apps hasn't been updated in 3 to 4 years.
Many are so outdated that they aren't compatible with the present iOS and crashes.
Many of those app aren't even free. The dev took the money and ran.
True, except what about those people who do not update their devices or have older devices.. now they can't get applications that while might not work on newer devices.. do work on older ones. This could get a bit tricky for Apple if not done correctly. Essentially they could be completely blocking out older devices.. why stop at just IOS.. might as well go hit up older mac's too and say sorry.. you can no longer purchase applications.. upgrade your machine to do so.. even though there's plenty of older applications that work just fine. I'm not saying your wrong by any means.. I just mean.. Apple should take note and think about their overall user base and not just those on current devices. I know plenty of people who never update their devices or use older ones.

Be curious to know the numbers involved in the cull.

Either a large amount or a little amount says something significant. After all, with X million apps on the store now, Apple do like to talk about that large number. So what are we trimming thousands and not really reducing the volume or are we culling hundreds of thousands and making a dint big enough that they won't be able to mention App Store growth at the next event?

I imagine it's the former.

..or making a change in marketing from "we have *big number* apps in App Store " to "We have *still a big number* current/optimized/updated/relevant apps in the App store ".

I´m quite sure that 99% users prefer 1 million perfectly updated and relevant apps over a billion spyware/junk apps..

Android can have the record for most apps, I just want the quality apps anyway.. :)

So anyone with an iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, original iPad, or original iPhone is just out of luck? There are still lots of apps that only need iOS 5, 4, 3 or even 2. Those old apps work just fine. If you remove old apps, then old devices will no longer have access to those apps.

DOOM Resurrection hasn't been updated in 6 years. It only requires iOS 2.2.1 to play. It still works fine.

It would be easier if a developer could delete the apps themselves or remove them from sale. I would love to delete apps that I have not been able to update in years rather than wait for Apple to do so.
Well, you go to iTunes Connect, go to "My Apps", pick the app, and remove it from sale. Poof! Gone!

They need to just break up the store into sections... if your on an older device the App store already knows this so only show applications that work with that OS. It says in each application description what version is required anyway. That way if I'm on the latest and greatest OS I can either say.. show me any apps for 8.0 - 9.3.5 and boom there's the list. This is no where near difficult for them to do considering it's basically already in the coding.

I wonder how do they plan to curate so many apps, for surely they'd be in thousands. (Crowdsourcing, starting with the reviews, might help.)

Yeah, I've worked on apps where people still use older iPhones or iPads for e.g. book reading apps. You don't need the latest and greatest hardware to read books. That's why people still use old devices and old versions of apps. What Apple needs to do is allow you to search for apps that only support the iOS version you are running. e.g. fix their search :)

They do care, because they all pay $99 per year to stay in the App Store.

Well, if they have multiple apps, that's fine. If it's just the one, the one that hasn't been updated in years, then they are literally getting $99 out of their wallets and shoving it down a drain!!

or maybe the developer is busy writing so many other apps, he or she can't get to their own? Stop complaining. You probably know nothing about software development.

Guess what? I'm a software developer. Whoops. Try not to feel too stupid...

It's about time Apple looks at quality instead of bragging about the number of total apps. There's plenty of apps that I've found in the store that haven't even been updated for the 4" iPhone 5 screen size. I'd imagine there's still a handful that haven't even been updated with iPhone 4 retina display resolution.

Good idea, though there are some apps, that I will really miss and some that I cannot get around to why they never got updated.

I wonder if a digital "bequest" might be an idea for single-developers.

If the developer not going to support an old app it should not be on app store.

What would Apple consider "not supported" because one year is not long enough....

Developers take breaks all the time to work on other stuff... and other apps which are working there is no reason to "just keep them up to date because they'll be removed otherwise" for no other apparent reason..

I can see Apple doing it to their own app, and OS's but not always to third party apps, Apple did not develop.. in all cases..

Clean up is always good, but be selective with what your doing. Apple just wants to control more.

About time. I see a lot of old abandoned apps on Apple Play Store. It's sort of becoming an app ghost town as developers are jumping ship for Google Play Store with nearly 90% world marketshare.

Developers can't remove apps from the app store!
Of course they can. Been there, done that.

God, you are clueless. Developers go where the money is. The money is where customers are willing to pay. And that's on Apple's App Store. And please, get the name right. There is no "Apple Play Store". There is the App Store.
