Maybe it's really only because the whole plaza will be rebuilt while adding several "light tubes" to get more daylight into the basement—for the trees as shown in photos of a supposed model of the upcoming store. But I like the idea of a new cube with one glass panel per side a lot.

Maybe they'll replace it with a Thinner one.

Good one... and beat me to it.

I've heard to make the cube work again after the changes will require some kind of dongle.

How does the removal of the cube cost $2 million?

Perhaps the service bids all used the word "edition": cube removal edition services... or maybe cube removal pro services?

All ;)

Apple , I know you are rich, but who ever quoted you $2 million to dismantle it, saw you coming a mile away!

I doubted you knew anything about product Tim, and I definitely know, you know nothing about construction. Though I'm certain the workers will come from equal diversity backgrounds .....

On a serious note.... what am I missing here ?

Cranes, construction labor costs (at least $60/hour), road lane closure, sidewalk extension, permits, etc.

So... how many months will it take ? We are taking dismantling the enclosure , not renovation costs.

Maybe they'll replace the "cube" with a "cylinder".

A giant watch band..... changes colour depending on the festive season . All seasons celebrated equally

Im by no means an expert, but would it really take more than say 10 people one working day?
So let's say 80 hours of work. Then we could even go as far and make it 100$/hour. That makes it $8k in labor cost. Even if we multiply it with 10, it would still only be $80k. Add a crane for $20k a day (a sum that I just pulled out of my behind and is probably way too high) and we stand at a $100k.

Is it really that expensive to get the permits and the other stuff in New York?

Umm missing a background in construction in NYC is my guess. You understand that Tim had nothing to do with this, that Apple has construction VPs (and a full team below them) that develop their stores all over the world, and that this team took the work to bid and selected the $2M option as it is the best one, right?

Why do people think the most valuable company in the world is stupid just because it doesn't put the port they wanted on their laptop or the battery they wanted in their phone? I suspect those folks have never actually run a business.

I live a block away and pass by a few times a day. They recently expanded the construction area to the edges of the street, where now there is a makeshift walk path in the street. It will be interesting to see how the new store looks from above ground. I hope the restore or change the cube and do not entirely remove it.

They definitely needed to rework the entrance/exit, as it was always a cluster mess going in and leaving down the one staircase.

Yes, I almost always take the elevator. Not a fan of that staircase. I wonder what they will do with the cube? I like it. We will see.

Love the cube. Hated the claustrophobic feel of the inside. Felt like a deathtrap in case of fire or natural disaster to me.

Good call to renovate and open it up inside, even if it's just the illusion of openness.

Man, they sure like to waste money on imagery. I guess it's great if you have money to burn. But I rather have them focus all that effort into their products and make them more contemporary and innovative.

The way I read it, this time the cube will not return? Idk but I sure hope not. This cube is a monument and its got Steve's name written all over it.

Here ya go: 9to5Mac has learned that a new glass structure will replace the existing cube that has been permitted to be removed, although the new structure will have similar dimensions and may not look visually different.

I'm surprised they don't fly over their factory workers from China and get it removed for pennies.

On another note that store desperately needed a expansion, I don't care what time or day you go there, it's always packed with tourists.
