Maybe they'll replace the "cube" with a "cylinder".

Yes. Cubes are so 2000.

Apple , I know you are rich, but who ever quoted you $2 million to dismantle it, saw you coming a mile away!

I doubted you knew anything about product Tim, and I definitely know, you know nothing about construction. Though I'm certain the workers will come from equal diversity backgrounds .....

On a serious note.... what am I missing here ?

Understanding the difference between renovation and demolition?

So many ill informed comments - even a small refurb of a retail environment can cost $500K. This is not $2M to knock something down and sweep up the rubble.

Amazing how so many people seem to go out of their way to not understand that. But then that wouldn't allow entry of a juvenile remark.

Tim Cook is tired of being compared to Jobs and is destroying everything he okay'd in a fit of rage.

The 15 glass panel cube will be replaced with a single sheet of transparent aluminum in the shape of a cube (or maybe a cylinder).

The Cube is a joke from an architectural standpoint, better see it turned into coke bottles or beer bottles than to have the location corrupted by poor design.

The permit is for $2M of renovations. The description on the permit is "full removal of glass cubical structure at apple store entrance". Since there is no other permit, we can only peculate about what is actually covered by the $2M.

I don't think so. You can't double the size of store to Apple's specifications for $2 million in New York City. Everything here costs a fortune.

The current store is completely in the basement, which is one of the reasons Apple originally got a good deal on it. If they're doubling the size of the store, either there's more basement space they can expand into on the east side or they're expanding on the street level floor. If that's not the case, it may be that they're expanding into the area below the plaza which is why they'd have to remove the cube. But in any of those cases, $2 million is a pittance. Doesn't Apple spend more than that just on a glass staircase?

I think people amazed by the cost of dismantling are seriously underestimating the work involved. Demolitions aren;t cheap (and this being all glass it wouldn't even be a standard demolition). Not to mention the fact that it seems like some of the space needs to remain intact. Furhter, we are considering this is a full reno, right?

Anyway, Apple is spending money on American labor here, I am certainly not going to complain about that.

And that's not occurring. Look at the permit history for the location going back to October 2016. The $2M is for the next phase.

Apple is planning to expand its Fifth Avenue store to double the size of the original location. The store is growing from 32,000 square feet to 77,000 square feet, giving Apple more space at its flagship New York location.

Apple must need the extra space to store growing product supply constraints. :D.

Seriously though the cube is iconic. I'm not a fan of Cook but he's not an idiot. He understands the blowback if he permanently removed the cube, esp. for a ridiculous and faddish DJ booth.

Here ya go: 9to5Mac has learned that a new glass structure will replace the existing cube that has been permitted to be removed, although the new structure will have similar dimensions and may not look visually different.

Thanks!

Im by no means an expert, but would it really take more than say 10 people one working day?
So let's say 80 hours of work. Then we could even go as far and make it 100$/hour. That makes it $8k in labor cost. Even if we multiply it with 10, it would still only be $80k. Add a crane for $20k a day (a sum that I just pulled out of my behind and is probably way too high) and we stand at a $100k.

Is it really that expensive to get the permits and the other stuff in New York?

Given that it's on an extremely busy intersection of 5th ave, lane closure alone probably cost a fortune, you also have to hire police to watch traffic (what is simply is seating in a car with lights flashing). On top of it, you assume they will hire 10 people. But this is New York construction union, which will probably demand at least 20-30 workers (paid by the hour, work by the minutes). On top of it, moving glass that large and heavy is very daunting task.
Expensive, but that's New York construction for you.

there's no way that thing is coming down in one day with 10 people.. even if it were to be demolished on site, it would take more than one day to do that.

---
you also need custom rigged flatbeds (semis) to get the pieces out of the city.. likely requiring assistance from NYPD (and other agencies) just to get them from 5th ave over GWB (assuming).. then storage of the pieces during construction.. then bringing them back into the city. then (likely) reassembling..

we're talking hundreds of people involved in this and certainly more than one day.. it's months.. and every day of those months, apple will be paying a lot of cash for the proper care/storing of these glass panes.

and all that aside, it's NYC.. and NYC is expensive.. especially for construction projects.. contractor insurance alone is staggering.
