Anyone ever heard of false economy here?

This is terrible. There turning into Dell. They sell dirt cheap products with negligible profit margins, in a highly competitive market. Lets hope he's right when he says cheaper as in $999 and $1799, not as in $399 per unit.

Customer service = worse
Build Quality = worse

Go back to the early 2000's I say, where a mac was at least twice as much as a comparable PC, at least the thing never broke down, and of course it kept the rif-raff out.

Do you think the quality of the MPB of the last couple of years is anything to brag about ? If I were going on build quality I'd say Apple should knock off about $500 off the price even before these rumored price cuts.

Interesting comment about the riff raff. I once had a customer come into my department that looked like a homeless person. Nobody else would help her because she looked like she didn't have any money. I sold that woman about $12K of merchandise that day.

I've had money in the bank for over a month now just waiting for new MB's (plus for a Time Capsule). It would be great to get it for less. Hey I'm in education. I hope they Lower the normal price and keep education discounts as well.

A 10% (or so) price drop means Apple is turning into Dell? The pro Macs at least have been increasing in price and dropping low-end configurations in the last few years.

Agreed.

Record in what category? More like a personal best. I guess you could point out a few "overpriced laptops" in the market and compare sales, but you didn't, and thus I see no merit in this.

I meant record for THEM ... and i felt no need to clarify that until now!
Apple computer sales are at record levels FOR THEM. Revenues are at record levels FOR THEM. Profits are at record levels FOR THEM. They have significantly higher profit margins than ANY OTHER COMPUTER MANUFACTURER, and are gaining more market share than ANY OTHER COMPUTER company out there.

Personally, whether you see merit in the statement or not is irrelevant.

I hope they don't loose the student price cut in the change.

Yeah, I hate when I loose the student price, let's hope they tighten it up instead.

I also hope they don't lose the student price cut.

But really, let's hope that ANY Mac that's going to be updated still doesn't have a superdrive in it on the baseline model. You can buy a DVD burner now (a good one at that) for as little as $30. There's no excuse to not offer a superdrive in every model of every Mac.

The price trend, especially on laptops, is down -- so it makes perfectly good sense to assume that Apple's revised laptop line is going to get cheaper. Making that prediction doesn't exactly require an MBA.

Or an MBP....hahaha.

I don't have an MBA and I can make these predictions.:D

(Pricing's a little in the Air, but so what.)
iPod Touch
8 GB: $249, 16 GB: $299, 32 GB: $399.

A pricedrop from $299 to $249 will sustain current sales but not growth, base price needs to be $199 or $129,99 to compete directly with the Nintendo DS lite. Loss in profit would then be compensated via bigger volume, payed updates and the appstore.

A lower prices on the MBP, count me in.

Am I the only one who finds MadTV chronically un-funny?

Unless you know more than your post has led me to believe, there's no indication that Apple plans to eliminate educational pricing -- it's part of what has led to Apple's dominance in the higher education market. If they drop the retail price, it stands to reason that the educational price will drop as well.

The printer rebates are perpetual -- if you bought in an Apple Store, go back and talk to the manager to see about a return (if you haven't opened the box) -- the Apple retail staff are well aware of the perpetually-extended printer rebate (it's been going on for 5-6 years, now).

If the price changes within the next 14 days (the return period), you can arrange a price adjustment refund by taking your receipt to the store.

No, Your not the only one who finds MadTV ungodly stupid, and unfunny. Now SNL on the other hand...

It would also mean that Apple would have a laptop with discrete graphics for less than $1999 (unless the MacBook Pro switches to integrated graphics on the low end ).

Is there any chance Apple's manufacturing costs have decreased?

They are talking about lowering margins. Right now Macs cost alot because Apple marks them up 38% over their cost. Apple thinks now that if they only marked them up 30% they sell more and over all make more money. Manufacturing cost really does not play into this

Apple seems to spend the largest portion of their processors. Intel doesn't drop the prices of those from revision to revision. Intel's price points are locked in for the most part.

You are correct!

Advice Please

Wondering if someone here could give me some advice. 5 Days ago I managed to win an auction for a new & sealed MBA on ebay for $1,400! I received it two days ago (just about when the rumors began to float). So far, I have been staring at it and drooling not wanting to open it afraid that a new MBA is on the way (not to mention the fact that I could sell it on ebay for a profit).

So what do you guys think?

Open it?
Put it up for auction?
Or keep it sealed and wait it out?

By the way, it's the standard 1.6 80GB MBA.

Thanks guys.

If anyone ever wonders why I'm slapping a Vista sticker on my MBP when I get it it's so I'm not associated with attitudes like these...

Why deface a perfectly good, and brand new laptop? That's terrible. That's like buying a new BMW, and putting, "Honk if Your Irish" stickers on it...

Apple used to use more expensive Intel CPUs, but in late 2007, they moved one step down.

I say sell it for a profit and wait. You know the MBA will be updated soon, so you might as well wait and get the updated version for the same money....or less...
