I'd really like to see the MacBook at $899.

If they are willing to cut it down to that price point, I really think they'd be seen as a very big competitor.
But hey, I can dream...

I agree with ya. If the drop is only like 100 bucks, would that really be that much of a difference? Doesnt look like to me. If the basic MB goes to like 799 or 899, much bigger impact.

So, if they reduce the MB to $999, Apple will be simply be killing the "Intel inflation" and return to the iBook price.
Although it will still lack the discrete graphics.

Anyone ever heard of false economy here?

This is terrible. There turning into Dell. They sell dirt cheap products with negligible profit margins, in a highly competitive market. Lets hope he's right when he says cheaper as in $999 and $1799, not as in $399 per unit.

Customer service = worse
Build Quality = worse

Go back to the early 2000's I say, where a mac was at least twice as much as a comparable PC, at least the thing never broke down, and of course it kept the rif-raff out.

I really hate people like you. I was basically refused service at an Apple Store once, because I'm 14. I walked in and told them that I wanted to purchase an iMac, 5 of the employees just laughed. Then finally I got someone to go back and get it for me and I handed them the $1700 in cash that I had saved for nearly a year and a half.

Jerks like you and the Apple store employees that I described are half the reason that people don't buy macs. People like you need to get a reality check. Not everyone can afford BMW's and million dollar homes, but that doesn't mean that they are rif-raf dissidents.

Figures, I just bought my macbook in April. I know the wife will not let me give her my macbook and me get a MBP. Hopes they do drop the price and substantially cuts the price of the mini. wife needs a new computer and a mini would suit her needs fine.

If they cut prices, more people would opt to buy an apple over the run of the mill laptops/desktops at wal-mart.

Wait, Dell cut prices and started selling at Wal-Mart, hope this does not mean that we will start seeing Apple at Wal-Mart - but then again never thought I would see a Dell there either; also never thought i would see an apple at Best Buy...

Would be nice if we see a price cut about the time of tax-free day here in NC.

Me thinks they may discontinue the mini and finally release a mid-tower or tablet everyone has been crying for.

time will tell, All I know if Apple's stock has really dropped in the last few days, but the whole stoclk market is in a frenzy again....

Why deface a perfectly good, and brand new laptop? That's terrible. That's like buying a new BMW, and putting, "Honk if Your Irish" stickers on it...

You missed the sarcasm of the reply the op made to the person who said Apple's high prices keep the riff raff out. It was a perfect elitist moment that we can all cherish in this smug little cult of exclusiveness.

Ditto.

I think that a price drop would be great, as long as education discounts stay the same (however I see this as very unlikely, as you can currently get $200 a Macbook Pro, meaning the price would be down to something around $1500 for the lower end model).

What do you think? Do you think that a price drop would affect the Education Store pricing at all?

I would hope not, but they did that with the iPod... Now there's no such thing as a discounted iPod for education... :(

If I could pick up a laptop for $899, and a mini for $499, I'd order them both in under a minute. I'm assuming, of course, that there is a price drop and the educational discount remains. Bring us back to pre-intel pricing!

I say sell it for a profit and wait. You know the MBA will be updated soon, so you might as well wait and get the updated version for the same money....or less...

How in the world do you claim that? What are they going to update the MBA with? They just dropped the price on the upgrades, they're not going to make a big change anytime real soon.

I'd say keep it if you want the MBA, sell it if you want the money or another machine.

Is should have been $999 from the get go, the iBook was $999, they switched to intel which was cheaper than Motorola because of the bulk buy and they charged more.

I don't know how you get these prices from. The G4 shipping in the iBook and PowerBook was about $72, the Core Duo started at over $200. G4 wasn't dropped because it wasn't good value for money. It was dropped because Motorola didn't have a chip that was faster for more money.

I don't get what you don't get? Apple lowering prices? So what is so bad here? You should be glad! Say thank you for such great product for such low price. And vote for it even more- with your money. Case closed.

Now explanation for these who still don't get it. It is not in companies interests to charge premium all the time. Everyone want to get profit of course, but if product is flying off the shelves you can negotiate even better deals with your suppliers and bring costs down, so what that will mean is either bigger profit for you or you can pass price reduction to consumers and that will provide you with even bigger profit.

I mean why would people buy something else than apple if the price was reduced? Plus apple has some catching up to do with components- competition offers better processors, bigger hard drives and more memory at lower price points.

Ipod line needs revamping too. It just became tradition. Even competition don't have ipod killer so far, you have to make good product even better. Traditionally ipod slims down with every revision, and this time I think emphasis will be not on a size (nano or shuffle has no benefit of becoming smaller, might be just lighter, ipod classic can trim a few millimeters) but on functionality. We can see more applications added or appearance of nano touch line.
Ipod touch is new platform to sell apps, and I think apple will place emphasis on this particular line of ipods. Why would anyone consider ipod touch? Not anyone wants a iphone or they don't like contract or other reasons. Besides touch becomes very fancy remote for apple tv.

That would be so great if they dropped the price of the MBP. I do love my macbook but it falls short sometimes :( .....*sigh*. Hopefully they do this sooner than later.

Heck...they should just give them away I guess. The cost now is lower than previously with the edu discount. Some people are never happy. I see all these comments about how macbooks should be 899! and they say they still want the edu discount. Well 899 is less than you can get now with edu discount so why complain? Jeez...they are trying to make money here.

Did I miss something? The forecast was a fall TO 30% margins, right? Nothing about a fall in revenue.

Sorry my bad here... I had another browser window open reading another blog that someone had equated that that 30% margins and the fact that Apples Stock is down over 8%, they were expecting Apple to lose 30% revenue or stock face value. and could see Apple's stock drop 30%

I was a little confused as the person's post made no sense. But then again, I am not a financial analyst -and by the way the post read the person was not a journalist or English Major (or even knew how to type in English). I went back again and noticed the blog entry was removed.

This might actually be BAD news, if Apple decides to go downwards in terms of pricing and seek lower-end markets, it might be obliged also to lower component costs and, in the long term, its own brand image and value...remember, RAZRs were cool when they were upper-end...once they became a commodity, Motorola lost its way.

Therefore: Apple, DO NOT LOWER YOUR PRICES THAT MUCH!
