democracyrules is right. It will be expensive. They made iphone 7 plus $20 expensive bcause they added a second camera, tbMB pro became $100 expensive as they added touch bar and same for other products as well. Even if they can give in similar pricing line up, they wont give it in same price. If you want more, pay more. That's what Apple's new strategy is nowadays.
I understand the concept and can certainly see why it could be true. I'm still taking a wait and see approach.
Or maybe it's a wait and hope approach.

Stainless steel (I'm assuming they would use 302) is much harder and stiffer than 7075 aluminum and in a fully hard condition (such as you would see with a formed piece) is about as strong for the same weight. It also is more scratch resistant. It should work well in a phone chassis.

I don't buy the "same weight" claim. If so, why do all car manufacturers opt in for aluminum body for lightweight cars? And why did Apple go for an aluminum body in the first case for the iPhone 5, if it is not lighter?

Edge-to-edge iPhone concept image via ConceptsiPhone

I can't wait to view movies, work docs, etc., with a hole in that beautiful new edge to edge OLED screen. Oh, and where's the front camera? How will apps accommodate the new aspect ratio?

No, the earlier spelling was aluminum. Then the British decided to add the i. Originally it was alumium. Fortunately they didn't mess with platinum.

plat-NEE-um. lol

Honestly though, this phone sounds bomb. I'm ready.

P.S.- new macs please phone company.

Sure, anything to artificially jack up the price of the iPhone. Apple can't innovate in technology so just add more expensive materials.

But seriously I think Apple needs to refocus on bringing value to the brand to grow market share. If Apple continues to offer near $1000 flagship phones with $600+ profit margins, they will quickly erode their consumer base including the loyal consumer base they have established.

ALL flagship phones are overpriced today because of Apple's pricing structure and what is going into these phones tech wise does not justify the kind of profit margins companies are demanding. Phones have become common place and boring and too expensive for what they offer and Apple has contributed largely to this with incremental updates and stupid profit mongering.

If Apple were to lower the bar on what a flagship phone costs, suck up a little of their exorbitant profit margins in favor of a more consumer friendly price then I could easily see Apple gain market share once again. A few generations of sub-$500 flagship iPhones would kill off a lot of the Android competitors and simplify the phone market considerably.

Also instead of just the phone, Apple needs to refocus on their services. A relatively cheap phone with a plethora of value added services chipping away $10-$20 a month from consumers is a much better profit margin in the long run then a high priced one time hit followed by consumers spending money on superior 3rd party services. Apple has to suck back their ego and hubris and change their paradigm and realize that a device is just a gateway to a platform and NOT the sole source of profit. Amazon and Google have realized that and they both soared in 2016 while Apple stagnated.

Hopefully in spite of all my skepticism Apple has big plans for iPhone 8. I used to love this company but it has been so very dissapointing in the last few years and I am tired of the incremental roll out of superfluous features that are hailed as groundbreaking, magical and epic while everything else Apple does is suffering from too much focus on the iPhone.

We are in the post iPhone era, Apple just doesn't know it yet. Consumers are moving on to the next "it" device and Apple hasn't made one yet.

Hopefully the finish on the metal makes it less slippery than the current bar of soap iPhone

With glass back and curved front there won't be much steel to hold to. The steel will probably be mostly inside the shell providing structural strength.

It was the Brits who changed their pronunciation to that.
You are trying to tell me that British english (which is btw. the correct english) changed it from right to wrong?

AFAIK - it was americans who kept bastardise the english language. (I'm not english btw :)) )

So if I go to school I would never wanna learn US english and I would always want to learn British english as that is THE correct english. We don't need to argue about that, right? Historical fact I hope everyone is aware of :)

so, Aluminium :D

This is going to be the hardest year in waiting for a new iPhone I think I will have ever experienced. And I have been through them all. Bring on the revolution. The 7 was the first phone I skipped. EVER.
