I never understood how Apple could "bring jobs back to the US" that never existed here in the first place. Go to jobs.apple.com and you'll see the number of job requisitions inside the US far out weighs those outside the US. If employing 4K engineers in India makes it easier to sell products there then it seems like a no brainier to me. Apple is a multi-national corporation with more sales outside of the US. This idea that all jobs have to be created in the US is absurd. But in the year of Donald Drumpf and Bernie Sanders I guess I shouldn't be surprised at some of the comments here.

You can't completely ignore the fact that all Apple computers and products USED to be made in the US....if you ignore that, yeah you have an excellent point, and solid argument.

I don't get your point about Apple hires for thier campuses. We are talking about outsourcing , Mac Pro was outsourced and than it was insourced. An example of where jobs went overseas and were brought back to the US, though it was just a PR stunt.

People understood why manufacturing went to China , to compete , but now services are also being moved out, so if in 2-3 years you are calling an Indian etc call centre instead of US for support is that cool? This is what people are worried about

i don't use maps, so i don't care how bad it gets ...It can be a total disaster and i still won't use..

They're traitorous RATS and this jobs give away to foreign countries must END. Enough of this. God's sake, we'll all be flipping hamburgers. So if this work is labor intensive set it up in Sonora, CA., Labor rates are less than half of Silicon Valley and 4,000 Americans desperately in need of jobs will be working. Trump has to stop this ****. It's why we're electing him. The only things left in the U.S. from Apple in 10 years will be the G.D. cash registers to ring up their sales. All their jobs will have gone overseas. The damn Traitors! And that's what the are. Good Business decision? ********!

Would you mind listing the countries you have visited throughout the world and your international experience?

Once you do, I'll try to explain why business is very global, the resources (rare minerals and sub-suppliers are not in America and most low level jobs in USA are performed by latinos or illegals.
Even your Mr. Trump has Mexicans (I hear he is very nice to them) working for him.

This post does not say what breakdown these 4,000 jobs will have.
But, I can assure you the Indians will have more engineers than what's available in America. They value education.

Trump will not be able to make one dent into corporations NOT producing in America. Free enterprise at work and there is something we call laws.

Apple sales are no longer dependent on Americans and why would you not make sure you have a presence in a market you sell to?

In line with previous rumors and confirmations, Apple today announced the opening of a new development center in Hyderabad, India focused on Apple Maps development.

WaveRock campus in Hyderabad, India

The new center will employ up to 4,000 workers, with the announcement coming as part of Tim Cook's ongoing trip to China and India.According to previous reports, the new center at Tishman Speyer's WaveRock campus in Hyderabad is 250,000 square feet, with Apple investing $25 million in the project.

The news comes a day after Apple announced plans to open an iOS App Design and Development Accelerator in Bangalore, India. That center, intended to aid Indian app developers in adopting Apple's Swift programming language and help with development and one-on-one app reviews, is planned to open early next year.

There is no way this area has 4,000 geospatial engineers for the grabs.
Basically he says "We will be hiring thousands of peasants to manually enter stuff into the database which we cannot possibly scan or automate in any other way"
Peasants! These are university graduates stop being such a privileged nonce. Your talking about a country were top it college places are so competitive their maybe a few hundred applicants competing for a single place. Or is that you consider Indians inferior to you!

Yet another American company slowly moving operations overseas. Awesome. If this is as successful as Dell's Indian support center, just imagine how horrible Maps will be in the future. You think it's bad now? Ha!

It's more of a function of the hiring and operation strategy of a firm.
Dell call centers pay peanuts by Indian standards and that shows in the quality of staff they hire .. On top of it, even the good folks they do get are mandated to stick to standardized scripts (because the top brass feels it minimizes deviation from procedures)

On the other hand, try calling Amazon India call center (amazon.in , not amazon.com ) and you will be more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of service (and the quality of people) they offer

Even if Apple were to move their call center ops to India some day , it would appear reasonable to assume that they would hire staff that is at par with an Amazon and not Dell

Having said that, Dell also run several outsourced Operations out of India but with a different tier of staffing (and obviously at a different price point) - You won't be able to tell because its background ops that chugs along at near six sigma quality - Something that would be hard to achieve at even a 3x budget in the states because you would be overburdening the limited staffing you would get for the budget

Anyone else as uninterested in this as I am? Where are the WWDC leaks?
Apple used to make hardware and software ... many times they innovated and made amazing products. These days it is just news about how they have spent a lot, purchased a lot, and how they are focusing on bloating their corporation. Tim Cook thinks Apple people loved Apple because of Steve Jobs, so he is being high profile. He does't understand that Steve Jobs was a mere charismatic conduit for amazing designs, products, services that helped people or improved their lives.

So now this is about the best we get in Apple news.

I have a Macbook pro, an iPad, an iPhone, a Mac Pro, and with this move, I'm not buying anymore. It was okay with Foxconn, companies have to do that to stay competitive, but Apple is comprised of a bunch of greedy tax dodgers who don't give a damn about our America. I'm done with the rotten Apple.

Good. Does this mean we won't have to see you post more stuff like this? ;)

Amen. I hear you. All the while Cook and Obama have a good chuckle over it. Apple is traitorous! These should be AMERICAN JOBS! When will we refuse to tolerate this? When? We can stop this, but we don't. Do we all want to be unemployed?
If it weren't for Americans their would be no HTC or Samsung.

Are they sending them into space to take updated aerial photos? It is pretty sad how outdated they are where I live.

Tim instead of hiring people in America, keeps hiring people oversees. Then he says he wants to do the right thing. Tell indian people to buy your crappy phones then. Tim needs to be replaced, he is a cancer.

Come back after WWDC and let's see if Apple doesn't innovate anymore.

I've got a $300 Navigator, I never use it anymore, Google Maps makes it look 50 years out of date.

Sure but navigator apps on the phone like yours do not have the ability to detect traffic cameras. A dedicated GPS does and it's far more accurate, in my experience, because you do NOT need a carrier plan to run it.

If you're in an area with no signal, you'll have a problem and won't be able to use google maps or Apple maps. GPS like the Garmin will lock in to your position regardless of terrain.

So you just joined yesterday to tell us you are done with Apple - why bother?

We've been living in economically global market for decades. Companies pay tax where that money is earned, according to the laws in that country. That is not tax dodging, no more than a company setting up it's "headquarters" in Delaware because of that state's friendly business laws and tax.

I would expect a multi-national company like Apple to have employees around the world. Again, I don't know what is so scandalous about that concept. Do all you people complaining about this also irk you that BMW makes all but one of it's SUV/SAVs in S.C. or that VW has a plant in TN or Kia in GA or Mercedes in AL providing thousands of jobs for people there and related parts suppliers, transport companies, and helps to sustain the local economy in those respective plant's towns?

Get over it. There are no borders in commerce. If you put up barriers then you are going to lose a lot of products that are not naturally available in the U.S. That is not only an inconvenience, but will result in lower employment and a worsening of the economy.

Now whether this is a smart move remains a question. Honestly I do wonder if Apple can't get something as "simple" as Maps right after 3 years (recall Apple chose to ditch Google Maps before it's contract expired) then how does anyone expect them to have a production ready car out by 2020?

The USA first crowd does not get that concept (Global), let alone that they should make a major push in education for a better future. Just consuming like crazy at the cheapest prices is not the future.
Nobody will change consumer behavior.

If the German or Japanese automakers would only make their stuff in their countries, we probably would not get better products. Were they(and others) to pull out , no more jobs in USA.

People in other parts of the world are also creative and have ideas .
Why not get as much input and viewpoints from everywhere?

So shortsighted, blinded by red, white and blue glasses.

What is up with maps! Seriously, I'm curious.. Apple has lost Maps game to Google even before the game was started..

I've never opened up the Apple's Maps intentionally since !? forever..

Like many others, don't think this move is any related to maps at all.. It must be some type of umm "making people happy" maybe?..

All they had to do was outright buy TomTom or Nokia Here Maps. They bought Beats instead, while Mercedes picked up Here Maps for a song. All they had to do was buy Songza which Google picked up for $30mil and turned into Google Play Music, but instead paid ONE HUNDRED times more for the far worse Beats.

Beats was when Apple jumped the shark. It was obvious then either fresh management was needed or Apple was done.

The same management is still there. Maps, Apple Music, Services, iPhone innovation, new product categories... none of those things will ever be fixed under current management.

It's time to activate the Golden Parachutes and install some fresh at Apple.

I blame the Board of Directors for letting this go on for so long.

What the heck is wrong with people? You do realize that we do live in a world economy now and like it or not, not everything can done in the US. Apple is not alone here... almost every high-tech company out there is using different markets to help expand their development or manufacturing.

Sure, I'd LOVE for Apple to bring more manufacturing home, but you do realize the biggest barrier to doing this is our own stupid government. Get pissed at Washington and not Cupertino. Same holds true for the tax thing... EVERY company does what they can to legally avoid taxes. It's complex and it's a PIA. But you can't blame them for doing all they can to retain their revenue. I'm sure YOU do all you can to take every tax deduction you can and manipulate your income through IRA's and other things to help avoid paying taxes... I know I do... why would you not???

So, dump your MacBook and go buy a Surface that is assembled in China and parts developed by Microsoft employees in India. Same freaking thing.

I'm not sure I noticed but will this group work on all of maps or focus on maps of India? It seems they would be a great fit for local maps data and 4000 people working on the project would seem right. I doubt the local area is well mapped at the moment. If trends continue, India will be the most populous place on earth in a few years. It makes sense for a business to invest in the area.

In other words, Apple needs a much cheaper way to get Maps up to par, but it's still behind the competition after 4 years+.
