in 7 days, we'll find out the MBA still sucks compared to the rest of the laptops; still overpriced and still under spec'd. not holding my breath.

10.7 - Hello Kitty : guess that didn't bode well with jobs. psyched on the new features.

What all big cats are left besides Cougar?

* 5.1 Public Beta: "Kodiak"
* 5.2 Version 10.0: "Cheetah"
* 5.3 Version 10.1: "Puma"
* 5.4 Version 10.2: "Jaguar"
* 5.5 Version 10.3: "Panther"
* 5.6 Version 10.4: "Tiger"
* 5.7 Version 10.5: "Leopard"
* 5.8 Version 10.6: "Snow Leopard"
Though I think Kodiak was Ocelot, if not then that is another cat name big/small.

Wildcat
African Golden Cat
Serval
Oncilla
and finally Sabre-Tooth :apple:

I agree. It is pretty nice being able to do that in w7. Picture this though....

a 4-corner snap feature!

Couldn't find where the original quote came from on a quick search, but are you really talking about snap, the worst feature in Windows 7, as 'pretty nice'?

The "let me move this window out of the way off the screen briefly ... omg no I mean let me make it fill the screen and block out the sun!" feature?

At least in Windows 7 it can be disabled by pretending you're trying to make it easier on your PC to run the GUI. Apple has a tendency to add such features without the ability to opt out, and I would really really dislike that.

from mac os 7-8, the launcher was a tool to quick launch applications. It gave birth to At ease later on (or was it the other way around?) ....

You can see how it might have influenced iOS... You could choose between at ease and the standard Finder for full control. I can see how Apple might go down this road again, allowing a streamlined iOS interface for the average user, with the ability to get full control if needed, and for power users.

Full desktop running IOS would be awesome for the average user - no window management, easy multitasking - the OS anyone could use. See that new printing support they just added, it's perfect for the average user. All that's really needed is some basic sort of file system, and the ability to add "plugins" for the non native codecs, like divx, etc.

At Ease was first, and discontinued around OS8, same time the Launcher showed up. Launcher was just a Control Panel and provided no real insulation or protection for novice users. I set up the Launcher for my parents and sisters to try to make things easy for them, but they would always end up closing it by accident and then couldn't figure out how to get back to it. How many times they came to get me "I lost my Launcher..."

Vestiges of this still live in the current OS X in accounts set up as "Managed with Parental Controls." All that is visible in the simplified Finder is one (uncloseable) window with single-click buttons for Applications allowed by the administrator. I have all my kids iMacs set up this way. Very reminiscent of At Ease/Launcher.

OS X Serval

I'll go for serval.

"The serval is an efficient killer, catching prey on an average of 50% of attempts (with a 67% success rate at night), compared to around one in ten attempts for most species of cat.[6]
Servals are extremely intelligent, and demonstrate remarkable problem-solving ability"

Mac OS X Serval, both intelligent and efficient.

Not that the current MacBook Pros aren't suitable, but a newer model might just convince me to upgrade. ;)

No iWork '11

No such thing. There will be no new iWork released for OSX in the near future. Think about it, the entire iWork team has been working on iOS versions of the software, they're probably working on a 2.X update to the iPad version now, which will undoubtably bring iWork to the iPhone.

They are not working on iWork for OSX right now, simple as that.

Finally! Back to the Mac!

This just made my day! Finally a "back to the mac" event! I've been waiting for this since WWDC 2010. Apple was just focusing on mobile devices but I guess the wait is going to be worth it! I'm totally looking forward for new iLife and iWork suites! Face Time should definitely replace iChat! And i'm sure Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) will be amazing! Maybe new MBA? Nevertheless, happy to know Apple is not only focusing on mobile devices! Greatest News Ever! :D

Speculations

Not sure why they'd put a lion on the invitation for a product named anything other than that. My guess is that if they're going for "Lion" than this must be a pretty big upgrade. I wouldn't expect touch controls yet. Previous rumors have hinted at touch iMacs about a year away. Not sure when "Lion" would be released but I wouldn't expect touch controls without hardware to use it.

I think we will have to wait for OSXI (OSXi) for touch controls like iOS. Besides touch controls are great for hand held devices but I'm not sure they're ideal for desktop computing. We'll see, if anyone can make it work and make people want it, it's the engineers at :apple:.

So, AppleInsider now says that 10.7’s preview was due at WWDC, but was delayed because of OS engineering resources being shifted. Considering the late WWDC date and session announcements this year (and no State of the Core OS keynote), makes sense.

I have to say I’m surprised by this news. While I always expected 10.7 in 2011, I didn’t expect we would see a preview this year since it didn’t happen at WWDC. I still think they’ll have to go through another WWDC before it gets released.

Tell me about it. You think there are a few here who want to see more Mac Computer stuff aside from the iStuff?!?!?! I can't wait to see what they have in store for us!

I love when Apple is like this. Mac. Mac. Mac. I wish it was just iPods and Mac. The iPhone, iPod touch and iPad are annoying as ****. I had to be honest.

The dilemma: Apple likes to be secretive and surprise people.

If they announced 10.7 Lion next week with touch controls, people would know for a fact that Macs with touch capability were coming out in time for this new OS. But they wouldn't want to give this super awesome surprise away now! They'd want to wait until the OS was done else everyone would be waiting to upgrade for a year.

10.7 won't come for probably a year after. i.e. September 2011 or so.

So what would they do? Show off 10.7 but not talk about touch? They'd have to let people know, at least developers since the people making the apps would need enough time to get their apps ready for touch.

So they would have to let people know. Which would eat their profits for a year since no one who wants a touch Mac would be buying new machines for a whole year.

They can't keep it a secret. But they can't let people know about it. So does it exist? What will Apple do? What can they do?

They could release the Macs with touch inside but not enable it until 10.7 I guess. But they'd have to make all their models from now on touch. All the laptops, all the desktops.

Some enterprising hackers would figure out how to enable it and release libraries. The word would get out. People would be using touch even with the OS not even finished.

Isn't speculation fun?? :p
