Apple to Host 'Back to the Mac' Media Event on October 20th

It's about freaking time Apple shows some love for the product that made all the iPods, iPhones, and iPads possible. I just hope it's something coming sooner rather than later - OS X needs a kick in the pants to breathe some life into it.

Remember the initial idea about OSX in 1999? new operating system built from the ground up, meant to be trim and fast...

Look what happened. Since 10.2 the whole thing went to bloated crashy. They should make Lion/7 able to amputate large pieces of fluff function so people can run their computer without that garbage bogging down everything. I'd axe all the iChat nonsense, Spaces, Dashboard, Access/Crip stuff,Expose, Stacks, and probably 100 smaller items.

Just allow me an OSX with bare-bones search and connectivity. It could load in 5 seconds.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I wonder if they will skip 10.7 and go right to 11.
Since windows is on v7 they might want to separate their OS by leaving out the 7.

Ok, much of this has been said before, but oh well.

Obviously going to be talking about 10.7 Lion. There won't be anymore "cat" named OS updates after this - Lion is king of the cats. Features in Lion are going to be:

-Cloud oriented, and will not require a Mobile Me subscription (MM will still BE there, but include extra features not available otherwise. Of course, these features wont' be terribly great, and won't work terribly well, but we'll all still pay for it anyways to keep our email addresses).
-There will be a curated app store for the OS, but you'll still be able to install apps the old fashioned way.
-GUI will be updated, have a black and grey feel to it.
-There will be "under-the-hood" improvements that most of us won't really understand.

There will also be a hardware update - I'm guessing a major overhaul of the Macbook Pro lineup:

-MBA will be permanently discontinued.
-But, ALL MBPs will be incredibly thin and sexy just like the MBA, and none will come with optical drives, except MAYBE the 17".
-MAJOR battery life improvements.
-New 11" version with near-retina display quality.
-11" and 13" Macbook Pros will have AMD CPUs and chipsets.

Finally, 10.6.5 will be released that same day, and include support for the new AMD powered MBPs - that's why they've taken so long to release it.

What you won't see: touchscreen OS or Macs, iOS emulation, USB3, LightPeak, faster FireWire, 3G built into a notebook, or any other new hardware.

Oh, you think it's going to come out soon. That would be cool, but I would doubt it personally. I was assuming they pulled too many people away to work on iOS stuff.

I was literally minutes away from buying a 15-inch MacBook Pro when I read this - perhaps I'll wait a bit.
Is the MacBook Pro likely to be updated at all? If so, is it likely to be a major upgrade and is it likely to be more expensive? I'm a student at University so cost is quite a big issue - I can just about afford a 15-inch one right now, but if the price goes up much I won't be able to!
PS: Sorry to post this here, but I'm not sure where it should go.

A Tiger and A Lion together makes a Liger.

I can just see that name happening in the world of OS X. It just sounds right for the next name after Lion.

I'm really looking forward to the event to see the UI changes. OS X needs a few UI changes to give it a new look for once.

Nah. That would imply "mating" OSX 10.4 with 10.7, although it would be nice if 10.8 got the brighter Tiger color scheme back after years in darkness.

If so, you would be able to get the "old" (which is now the current) MacBook Pro for a reduced price until it's out of stock. So my advice: keep an eye on it.

Not all the OS features I mentioned are necessarily going to be discussed, but I bet they'll be in Lion. There will be a dev. kit going out for it, and the new XCode as well. Lion is only going to be in Alpha status, so release is not for another year or so.

Back to the Mac (and maybe FCP)

Finally some news related to the (real)Mac. My personal hope for the event is a 64-bit update to Final Cut Pro, even if it's not released right away. I have gigs of memory sitting unused on my system that would love to be. Also, try editing a feature film on the current FCP version. I managed to get mine done, but after hitting the 1hr mark of edited HD footage, FCP starts to chug... even when you're using nested sequences. Second, a stable version of Soundtrack Pro would be nice too as the program literally crashes after every other edit.

So here's my wish list.

1: OS X Lion
2: Final Cut Studio Revision - Final Cut Pro/Soundtrack/ and a DVDSP update would be nice.
3: iWork 11/iLife... meh I'll take it, a little more functionality in iWeb would be nice.
4: Native BlueRay support on all Mac Models. If for no other reason than back-up purposes. Hard drive storage is fine, but having an Optical backup is nice.
5. Deal with the "hot laptop" issue.

+1 doesn't sound very special!

Just realized I left all kinds of bad typos in my post.

Anyway, I am not too excited about a move to more multi touch in computers. I like Apple's multi touch stuff that they have (the trackpads in the notebooks, Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse), but I prefer a physical keyboard and I don't want an iOS style interface on my computer.

iOS's design is a great concept for mobile devices, and I think the iPad is about the largest size it remains useful for.

Dashboard

I'd love to see Dashboard have an option of running iOS on it. Let me run my iOS apps on my laptop or Mac. I mean, who really is buying "Dashboard Widgets" today?

It seems so obvious, yet missed. I'd bet $1000 this is in the product.

PS, for the Gold, Apple should make a PC product that lets people run same iOS apps on Windows7.

Mike

I would expect an OSX App store but not in this way

Why the hell would they do this!? It'd cannibalize their mobile device sales, and offering a Windoze version of the emulator would cannibalize their Mac sales!

For OS X Lion (I hope):

1. 100% Blu-ray support...it's almost 2011.
2. TRIM Function
3. Graphics driver updates...it's sad that you have to boot into Windows to get a decent framerate in some games.
4. Customization...we shouldn't need third party applications for this.
5. Smart Window function.

whats 5?

This couldn't have come at a better time, I was thinking it was time to upgrade to a new mbp, so now I'll wait and see if they refresh the line, if so, I'm getting one as soon as possible.

I hope the newer MacBook Pro's are better
