Yes, because then you could walk out of the store with a new phone after you sign a $1900 contract. The current $2000 contract is just to expensive

Seriously, $100 off is only a 5% discount over the contract's life.

so you're complaining about saving 5%?

I will never understand why this technique works. I would rather pay full price for the phone and less for the service. Apparently people don't do the math or they just must have the iphone that badly. There must be some market research behind this, and it says "the masses can't do simple math".

I think you might be on to something with that speculation. Especially if by "in a new coat" you mean with the matte plastic (or whatever) backing.

that's exactly what I meant..

Please, tell that to Apple as well...

For anyone living in a non-native english speaking country who still though prefers english as system default the International settings can be an annoyant hell on earth... It's a choice between either living with every date still displayed in the local language or living with american standards when it comes to thousands and decimal-delimitation. In short, it looks outright stupid and neglected that those aren't as easily changable as the time format. There are ways of course but is terminal hacking really part of the "Apple experience"...

To be honest I don't know what you mean exactly because my OS X works perfectly in the metric system, with correct time and date formats. I don't have to do any workarounds.

I think Windows and MS Office are much less efficient with different formats. (not that that's an excuse for OS X not performing the way you like it..)

Tell me again why US can't join the most of the world in the metric system?
For the same reason people in the UK will always drive on the wrong side of the road ;) It's baked in the society, with so many social, technical and political dependencies that it would cost billions, maybe even trillions to change it. Sorry, it was probably a rhetorical question...

I do not get Apple (who does?)

If they do not agree in having a cheap version of an Macbook, like a Netbook, why would they agree in having a cheap version of the iPhone? Because with the same logic behind a cheap iPhone should be pertinent to think of a cheap Macbook...

Looking forward for the iPhone v3, my iPhone v1 is almost dead :p

Cheers!

Perhaps Apple releases a cheaper iPhone, which many more people can afford, as well as a Pro version. That would be great.

Most likely ...

This is most likely where the "reduced rate plans rumor" came from ...\

I'd bet it's true.

- An iPhone without 3G - just EDGE - unlimited plan $19.99 data plan

(available in 4 & 8GB)

-An iPhone 3G w/ extended video capabilities $29.99 data plan

(available in 8 & 16 GB)

-An iPhone 3.5G w/ extended video capabilities + video conferencing $34.99 data plan

(available in 16 & 32 GB)

All 3 will be identical in appearance/processor ... and I'm predicting a 3rd color - silver or gray

I do not get Apple (who does?)

For my reasoning above - it won't be substandard - just differentiated by network speed and video conferencing - in other words it won't be feature constrained like netbooks, but feature limited instead.

This is weird because was so adamant about stating they weren't after the low price market share for computers.

Could it be Apple just really isn't a computer company anymore but a Cell Phone/App company first, and a computer company second?

1. iPhone 3G (new design) 8Gb $49
2. iPhone 3G (new design) 16Gb $99
3. Iphone Video 16Gb $ 149
4. Iphone Video 32Gb $ 199

1. iPhone 4Gb, 2MP Cam, $99
2. iPhone 8GB, 3MP Cam w/ Vid, $199
3. iPhone 16GB, " , $299
4. iPhone 32GB, ", $399

I'd bet it's true.

Welcome to da clubbbb

since my first gen iphone is slowly killing itself, im wondering how long i'm gonna have to camp outside of the apple store to get the new phone when it finally comes out

Yes.. the problem is AT&T, not the cost of the phone. I have many friends that can afford the cost of the phone, but cannot justify AT&T's plans.

I would agree that the plans are expensive, but it's not like expensive data plans are exclusive to AT&T. Blackberry, Palm.. really all PDA plans are equally as expensive across all carriers.

No doubt though, AT&T is milking the iPhone for all it's worth.

so can someone please explain when the iphone will be released for sale. Cause i was really planning on july but now this rumor says that production is in july?.... that sucks:(

No one here can explain to you what we don't know for a fact. There is conflicting speculation. Some "sources" think it will be Monday. Other "sources" hold tight to a July release.

Phil Schiller will tell us for sure on Monday what Apple's plans are related to the new iPhone.

Because it's precisely that - a rumor - no one is going to be able to explain when it will be available until Monday. I do believe that whatever will be announced is in production currently, though, due to the many indicators we've been seeing from parts manufacturers recently. When it will actually hit the stores won't be known for sure until the keynote.

Agree on this being likely. But to introduce the new model they will wheel out Steve. I think the 'surprise' appearance of Steve will be one of those cheesy video chats between Steve and Schiller except this time it will be reversed and it will be Phil calling Steve but on the 'one more thing' 'iPhone Video' with iChat front facing camera. Maybe they will make some kind of theatrical sarcastic gesture by having Steve convalescing in a Hospital but in a over the top exaggerated sitcom way.

Here we go again..

Ya, all you guys who insisted that Apple would never release a budget iPhone option to line up with their iPod strategy are about to be proved wrong.

You kiddies that think your iPhones are status symbols are just going to have to learn to accept the fact that it is just a phone (albeit a good one).

just yesterday i tried to talk to an AT&T store employee about the 'new iphone' that's coming next week and he tried his best to act like he didn't know what i was talking about. yeah right!

I'll try to prepare my fragile ego. (not)

He probably wasn't acting. I imagine you know more about Apple's plans than some AT&T retail store flunky.

I really think the nano will be on Verizon. Apple will get out of the ATT contract by saying it isn't the same phone.

Neither are the iPhone and the iPhone 3G "the same phone."

AT&T is the exclusive carrier, which has so far not been tied to a model. I don't see any Apple phone on Verizon until 4G/LTE (if then).
We don't know what the contract reads. I would bet Apple has a few tricks up it's sleeve.
