I really think the nano will be on Verizon. Apple will get out of the ATT contract by saying it isn't the same phone.

Hate to say it, MacNut, but I think that's wishful thinking. When Verizon moves to 4G from CDMA, then we're more likely to see an iPhone offered through them.

And you can rest assured that Apple would love to get out of their exclusive contract with AT&T and broaden their reach in the US.

It'll happen. Just not for a few more years.

They implied with this that they wouldn't enter the segment with cheapo hardware like the current netbooks. Entering the segment with Apple hardware that has just become cheaper to produce is an entirely different matter.

Saying that all netbook are Cheapo is not true though. Look at Sony's Netbook. Even HP has a very nice netbook. I still think Apple is going where the money is right now, and its not there computers.

This is a tough one because Apple is making so much money from AT&T! They make a killing off the monthly fee's and no other provider was going to give Apple that.

I don't know why cheaper phone hardware would stimulate anything in the USA. It is not the price of the phone, it is the stratospheric, astronomical monthly fee from AT&T that keeps people from buying. $70/month people, plus tax, lots of tax!

And I'm not talking about cutting the data fee. It's the minimum voice plan that is the problem. Give people a 50 minute plan, a 100 minute plan at a $19.95 rate, That would get things jumping!

Makes sense to me. Even without camera and GPS (or whatever they change to cut cost) you still have something more useful than an iPod Touch... which is to say, a great handheld computer that can run a zillion apps.

I wouldn't want a stripped down iPhone myself but it would be great for a lot of people. And many people could make do easily with 2GB or 4GB of space.

I never expect to see a smaller screen though. It would mess with the UI of current apps to the point of being a problem.

It's both--some people are far too blind to future (even recurring) costs. Cheaper plan options would be great, though!

Also, in the USA, AT&Ts plans aren't necessarily bad for what you get (IF you really need all those minutes). I don't use even half my iPhone minutes, but I only pay $6 a month more than I used to--when I didn't even have mobile Internet! (I had a land line and a long distance plan--both canceled to pay for the iPhone, which worked out great. But not everyone can replace their land line entirely, I realize.)

Apple doesn't get a cut of the monthly fee anymore. That is why 3G owners can get FAN discounts on their lines now.

I wouldn't complain if the iPhone was cheaper.

i find it a tad hard to believe that they would go back to the so not selling 4gb model. with all the games and such that is nothing. and the way they are hyping the APP store (have you seen the WWDC banner pics)

now I could see them dropping the price of the 8gb down to $150 which would not hurt at all. especially if ATT is serious about new plans for data where you can do a lower price low use for like $10-15 and unlimited for $30. maybe knock a few bucks off the texting plans and make it $5, 10, 15. cause it seems like the ATT bill is the bigger issue for many

who cares about the cost of the phone. It's the monthly fee that's way too damn high. For my wife and I to get one we'd be paying around $130/month.

... Analysts are predicting the cut would be either $50 or $100. If true, the drop would significantly stimulate sales of Apple's iPhone by up to 100%...

Great news. Now hopefully, they'll also stimulate sales of their Macintosh computers by up to 100% with price drops of their own. :D

There have been hints for a while now of capped data plans being offered by AT&T for iPhone users. A lower priced new iPhone model would dovetail wonderfully into new AT&T plans that shave $10 or $20 a month off of the cost of an iPhone and would continue gaining market share.

I have several friends with iPhones that never (and I mean never) use any of the data capabilities on the phone. They just use the device as a phone that has an iPod built in and get no real benefit from the unlimited data plan that they are paying heavily for.

Keep in mind that there are strong indicators that Apple will apply their successful iPod model to the iPhone line. The name of the game in the iPod space was to continue adding great features and high capacity to the upper end iPod line while bringing last years features to rock bottom prices in smaller form factor products like the Nano and Shuffle.

I have every reason to believe that this is Apple's strategy with the iPhone as well. Apple wants to get to a point where they are the dominant force in mobile computing the same way they are the dominant force in portable media players today.

Depends

Obviously we will see what officially releases...but...I'm all for the major price break so long as Apple does not also remove features. No point in saving $50 if some killer features are missing.

I'm the opposite. We have our cell phones now on a pre pay plan as we just don't "chit chat" with people. Quick phone call here and there about what's going on and where to meet and that's about it. We talk mostly via email or face to face.

So i'd take a plan with very low minutes but i'd still use unlimited data.

I think Apple is just going to sell the iPhone at a cheaper price point. The end. No crippled hardware. No pro model.

Some people on here refuse to even acknowledge that as a possibility. Why?

I think there would a high likelihood in this "climate" that they'll do what they did with the Macbook and just run the current model (at the discounted rate) alongside the new one at the current price structure. That way the penny pinchers can jump in alongside the neophiles and depending on what they are looking for, everyone gets a good deal.

I doubt a 'nano' phone would be introduced, unless it has the same screen dimensions and same screen resolution. Apple put a lot of effort into making the OS feel perfect for fat thumbs. The nano would need to keep the same resolution for compatibility with current Apps, and even just for the OS to work properly, all the buttons would have to be upscaled, to give the same feel and not be cramped.

Of course they could release a nano app store and regular app store, but thats twice the headaches for such a low revenue stream.

On a totally separate note, it always pissed me off that Apple priced the plastic macbook UP upon release of the Aluminium Macbook in the UK!

for me more important than a cheap iPhone version is AT&T offering a no data plan for someone who wants an iPhone but do not want to pay $20 to $30 a month for the data.
So they want to use the iPhone and for data use wi-fi.
No, the iPod Touch does not work, because it has no phone.

I highly doubt you will see a no data plan, but you might see an option to get an iPhone with a capped data plan, say something like 5MB per month for substantially less than the current plan costs.

As to comments about why would anyone want to save $50 a month and have less features, there are plenty of people willing to do this, just look at the price difference between iPods.

Personally I would expect to see a revised iPod running $199-$299 and possibly the current model or a revised version of it running at $99 along with the offer of lower cost plans for those who don't need unlimited data.

Cheapie Iphone...what???

who wants a cheapie iphone??? we all love apple because we want the best right?? and what do you expect to do when you want the best???pay for it right ha ha.. I just hope they have reasonable prices for the good stuff.. Looking forward to monday!!

So does this mean the new iPhone will ONLY come in one single, cheap, stripped-down version???????? :( Or will they do the thing that was rumored all along, which is a high-end, feature-packed iPhone with bigger capacity, and a cheaper, smaller-capacity one with less features??????

Cuz I don't want a cheapie iPhone... I'll gladly pay an arm & leg for an awesome piece of Apple technology, not some Wal-Mart iPhone.

Do you have a link to this? That would be very interesting to see Apples bound agreement to them getting a cut of revenues all the sudden end. My company has been getting FAN discounts since about 2 weeks after the iPhone was originally introduced.

The revenue share ended with the introduction of the iPhone 3G.

The new agreement between Apple and AT&T eliminates the revenue-sharing model under which AT&T shared a portion of monthly service revenue with Apple.

i really dont care about how much the phone cost. its all about how much the plan is. if that was lower id be in.

The price drop will probably entice more buyers but the most cost prohibitive part of the iphone is the monthly plan. If they don't offer a cheaper plan to go with an entry level iphone I wonder how much of an impact it will make.

To increase market share.......dramatically....

1. Available to ALL carriers.......Get into CHINA!
2. A version of iPhone WITH physical keyboard.
3. same price data plan as Blackberry.
4. Get PUSH mail working to compete with Blackberry.

#1 and #2 are KEYS.

Other Smart phones are slowly catching up. 4 of my friends bought BB because T-mobile plans are much cheaper and iPhone is not available to them. One HAD TO HAVE physical keyboard and another claims that iPhone will not work with his business email.

5MB? I assume you mean 5GB. Reading one email with a large image and you go over that.

I would welcome this new and cheaper iPhone with open arms. Moving to Vancouver next month, and in the market for a new cell. :D
My current Motorola W220 (lol) got lost in a drunken adventure in Neuss, Germany a few weeks ago. It was a PAYG cell so I didn't really care. Sure I was pissed I lost my cell, but wasn't a HUGE loss.
