Me too! My birthday is on March 9th. Last year the iPad came out on the 11th. Hopefully pre-orders will before the 9th, or an actual release!

The first full week of March starts on Sunday the 4th. So a March 6th, Tuesday announcement? Hopefully, it'll be the first week March starts, the week before, Thursday, March 1. Though, a Thursday or Friday would be unusual for an announcement. It has happened.

Im thinking announcement that tuesday and iOS 5.1 on that friday, followed by the iPad 3 release the following Friday. I have no evidence to back this up - its only speculation from the latest rumors.

So James Cameron will not be editing Avatar 2 on the iPad3 ??

At least the full 2K (2048x1152 pixel, 16:9 ratio) will be viewable on the iPad 3 at 1:1 pixel ratio (with 384 extra lines for information!). Though the movie was actually produced at 4K (4096x2304, 16:9 ratio), I doubt the iPad 3 will have 16 times the resolution (4096x3072), even though the new video (on the SoC) could handle it, but perhaps not at 120 Hz.

March 1st right here, but I'll hold on to my bday money until the new ipad is ready for my credit card! :)

That speculation does actually sound reasonable! Too bad it'll be a week after my Birthday for actual release. (It could still be a gift, bit nice one though, I'm prepared to buy it myself)

Sure... why not... at least until stock runs out.
Apple tends to move ahead, and not drag their old models unless there's a purpose for it.
Maybe Apple decides to allocate all iPad 2 stock to Educational Distribution Only.

selling them until stock runs out is not maintaining production. They are producing an iPhone 4 along with the 4S. I am inclined to think that they will continue to manufacture an iPad 2, but only one model. I don't think they will limit it to education though.

I hope its not a crappy "s" upgrade. I skipped the ipad 1 then the ipad 2 seemed like a crappy "s" upgrade with tacked on cameras so I skipped that also. I've been using a family members ipad 1 though and it feels quite sluggish compared to my iphone 4. So hopefully this ipad 3 has 1gb ram.

Good point about the RAM, actually that sounds reasonable because the iPhone 4S has 512 MB, same as the iPad 2 with the same chip (A5). A quad core I would think should have at least 1 GB of RAM so the Apps can really take advantage of the power and the quad resolution. 2 GB of RAM would be even better, but putting all that low powered RAM on an SoC (System on Chip) might be expensive, even though the the SO-DIMMs aren't. (I'm not saying the Apple would use DDR3, it would kill the battery life!)

It's always OK for Apples most ardent fans. Look there are people in here lining up to place pre-orders before Apple has even announced something. :D You've got to look on with envy if you're one of Apple's competitors.

Except we are all Apple's "most ardent fans" now. But I'd disagree w/ you b/c Apple MOST ardent fans are also its MOST vocal critics too. They are the ones, ironically, that want 1001 input ports and slots on their phone or iPad and other stuff that is anathema to Apple's design philosophy.

Really, it's been proven? I know myself and plenty others getting by just fine with 16gb....

Then you are just using it like a toy... :D
Use it for real work, and you'll see how quickly fills up.

Plus, the price difference between a 16GB and 32GB chip has dropped considerably; Apple is not going to keep making it. Even for Educational Institutions, adding just a few Textbooks will fill it up.
There are apps that take around 1GB, mostly games.
If you use Dropbox to sync your files, even with the free account, you'll be using about 2GB of storage.

Add recent photos to the equation: 2 GB

Load a few movies to take on a trip or long flight: 6 GB easily.
Add some music in high quality: 4GB (that's just 4% of my collection)

If you just use it to read, and watch Netflix, 16GB is a lot.

I actually down voted, not because I dislike the post itself, nicely done but for the fact I am on a slow capped internet connection and every time I refresh the page it takes time and bandwidth.

Another reason could be that people by themselves can access those pictures by just following a link.

That brings Me back to the former, is there a way to reload without actually load the whole page again.

It would be nice for Macrumors forums to auto update and only the new posts.

Would anything like this be possible in browsers nowadays?

Try a browser extension that does on demand picture loading.

I know it's very unlikely, but a SD slot to allow additional memory would be even better....

What happens when someone takes the SD card out? Do you get a whole lot of missing app icons show up, and/or corrupted app data? As nice as the ability to upgrade storage sounds, I think it goes against Apple's desire to keep everything as foolproof as possible.

Remember what happened to the white Macbook?

Apple would never have an older product to compete with their newer product.

They would rather convince you to buy the new one, and avoid hearing clients whining about their device not performing.

If they want to compete with the Kindle Fire, they may offer the iPad 2 32GB for $399.00 only if the production cost justifies the effort.
Otherwise, the wise choice is to offer it to a limited market such as Education.

I don't believe Apple would use an SD Card to store apps; it would take drastic changes to iOS, with possible issues to existing apps, and the risk of degraded performance.
If they do decide to provide a more extended use of an SD Card, they may just implemented as a big storage area, similar to the way iCloud was implemented in iOS 5, in a way that doesn't break any existing apps.

All the images I posted, combined, were less than 1MB. Apple.com's front page alone is more than that, and tech blog websites are even worse.

I tried to save people some time, and all those images (and more) would still have loaded if you would have clicked the link.

And yes, modern browsers all cache data so they reload stuff from local storage instead of downloading them again. On OS X, they go to ~/Library/Caches/YourBrowser. Media can stay there for weeks and only new stuff will be actually downloaded when you reload a page.

Well, when people ask you what you want for your BD, tell them that a VISA gift card would be great, so they don't have to waste time going to the store to buy you a present. :D

I dunno, the apps can go in the main storage (the built-in SSD) and content can be kept in the SD card. My Garmin Nuvi works that way, I keep my music and audio books on the SD card, but the software is stored in the device. You could even have a different SD card for each person, so the wife doesn't see the 32GB of pron.....

iCloud is clearly the next big initiative for Apple. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever to ratchet up the available memory in any of their devices (at a greater cost to the consumer and Apple) whilst simultaneously touting a cloud strategy designed to neutralize physical storage limitation issues. They are, in effect, two conflicting approaches.

The same holds true for removable storage. It just isn't going to happen.

I actually do use it for real work, I store most of my work data on it actually. :) I find it handy in my line of job, just because it's so portable and easier to share with others I am meeting with.

I've taken flights to the UK from LAX as well as cross country to NYC and have fit maybe 4-5 movies on it, 1.5GB/each I'd say. Plus when I am done, I can delete the movie and make more space! Dont need to see the same movie on the plane twice on a 2 week trip!

If you manage well, and recognize the need to not carry your life around on an iPad and use it wisely, 16GB is perfect!

Either way we're enjoying our iPads so whats it all matter! :)

So I guess within the next week or two, I'll file for my income taxes. This gave my a reason to speed up that process!

I just would like to say, THIS is the iPad I've waited for. You guys don't understand I didn't get the first iPad because it didn't have a camera/I was just skeptical (first product 'never rule') . Then I didn't get the iPad 2 becuase I was accustomed to seeing the 'Retina' display on my iPhone. It will now have both. . . =/ I'm so excited!!! :D

you'd be lucky to get 15 HD movies on a 64GB ipad

Why do you need Bluray on a 10" screen though? Your eyes can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080p at that size, but the retina screen is going to shine when looking at text.

Who's talking about BluRay? Watching a movie on the current iPad, DVD Quality (480i) vs HD quality (720p), there is a huge different. You must be blind or something...

I would imagine you must be happy with your CRT TV, but I gave mine away long ago.

It's possible now that we have 64Gb 2-bit-per-cell 25nm MLC dies (you can have up to eight dies per NAND device and iPad uses two NAND devices, which works out to be up to 2x64GB). Those were not available in high volume when the iPad 2 launched.

But they were when the 4S launched, so it got them.

Whether or not the iPad gets them is a good question. They already have 3 different sizes. I don't know if Apple would want to do 4 SKUs (or if 3, how would they break it down? 16/32/128, 32/64/128?). They didn't update the touch to 128GB when they could have, though.

Actually, you'd be lucky to get 2 BD movies in 64 GB. (The BD .ISOs on my home server average about 40 GiB each.) To fit 15 HD movies in 64 GB, they'd have to be horrifically compressed to half the bandwidth of a DVD.

In other words, I'd guess that igazza was talking about Itunes "HD" video.
