iPad Air should be called "iPad" and should be the regular mainstream iPad sold in Apple's stores and on Apple's websites. It should come in one size with an 11" LED display. The current regular iPad should be an education and corporate bulk purchase device, and should be unavailable to the consumer. If the new iPad Pro gets M3, then the consumer "iPad" should stick with M1 and always be at least two generations behind the Pro. The Pro iPad should further differentiate with an OLED display, an additional display size of 13", and multiple ports such as MagSafe 3 and an SDXC slot, in addition to the Thunderbolt 4. Every iPad including iPad mini should support the very same Apple Pencil version, and the wired Apple Pencil should go to die. iPad Pro should always have more speakers than the regular iPad, and possibly an additional camera on the front (landscape camera + portrait camera). iPad Pro should be available up to 8 TB.

More powerful and a nicer screen. Fair enough - but it's never going to replace a laptop in current form and for the power users who are getting excited about the M3 chip It's surely a niche market.

Ipad WAS revolutionary. now it's barely evolutionary.
If we knew iPadOS was changing it would possibly help sell units and get a bit of excitement up.

the mini is probably the most 'useful' daily device that could sit along a laptop rather than trying to replace it.

I think the usage of a iPhone Pro, iPad mini, and larger MBA/MBP works really well. Of course I see others that just want to use a iPhone with a larger iPad Pro. But what limits all of this is how Apple has restricted how each of the two mobile OS's work vs Desktop OS. :)

Iā€™m tired of all the rumors, just tell us already! If you canā€™t or wonā€™t bring them to market then reduce the price of the existing stock and give us a stop gap measure! Most of it is 18 months old at best. If I have to go another week Iā€™m going to buy a cheap Microsoft surface and check that out. My Gen 7 meltdown has caused me to loose it! :)
 
The upcoming OLED display further cements why Apple will never let iPads be more than big iPhones with stellar displays:

An 13" iPad Pro with a market-leading OLED display and full macOS capabilities and Apple Pencil support and great quad speaker setup and great built-in microphones would absolutely devour most MacBook Air and most low-end MacBook Pro sales in a heartbeat at the $799-$1099 price point.

Even upping the price by $200-$300 for both M3 iPads Pro would still beat MBAs and low-end MacBooks in value/$.

No way Apple would offer that kind of high value while also trying to sell MBAs and low-end MBPs.

No macOS on iPad, not in this millennia.

Consider yourself lucky. I gave my iPad Pro 10.5ā€ to my kid and took over his iPad Air 2. That in itself isnā€™t the end of the world but the reason he needed the iPad Pro was because the iPad Air 2 battery is dead. If I just try to watch a video on battery, the machine shuts off. I can only use the iPad Air 2 while itā€™s plugged in.

Mind you, I probably would have waited until June anyway just to get the edu promotion gift card.

That doesnā€™t make much sense. The iPad Pro 13 costs roughly as much as the MacBook Air 13. Apple would be making big profit either way.

It makes complete sense as Apple doesn't want you to buy either a MacBook or an iPad.

iPad and Mac are two completely different product categories that Apple has made sure won't ever adopt each other's key features even if it's perfectly doable from a technical perspective.

You're not supposed get one, singular device that does all of what a Mac and an iPad does.

iPad gets you a stellar, OLED touch display with Pencil support for $1099.

MBA gets you that real computer freedom and genuine computer I/O and a keyboard for $1099.

But you can never get both in one device -You're supposed to buy both an iPad and a Mac/MacBook, and also a bunch of accessories and a ton of apps that only work on each device, respectively.

An iPad+Mac combo device would be a disaster for Apple's iPad and Mac earnings.

In other words, you'll be waiting in vain for it. Never happening.

Well.... I'm not sure. I'm display curious but I'll have to see that in the store. Also a relocated webcam might be nice. But depending on pricing..... I may pass.

Those Galaxy Tabs have absolutely beautiful screens.
 
Gurman scored me a 20% discount on an M1 Air so I am happy.
Since it replaced an Air4 that I broke and does everything I want, it seemed right to get it.

Announcement and release are two different things.
There was one year that apple announced the iPad in April and it didnā€™t actually release until LATE may.

it was the 2021 M1 iPad Pro. Announce: April 20. Preorder: April 30. Available: 2nd half May

im just saying he left himself wiggle room if they do wind up *announcing* preorders in april but they dont *ship* until may. In fact, based on past patterns, this is the most likely scenario if the iPads are shipping in early May.

Real estate is where I am. Air 12.9 - awesome for sheet music and side by side pdfs and note taking. Considered jumping on the Pro $50 discount at Costco, but landscape mounted camera may be worth the wait. I live on Zoom.
