Hell... it's about time.

Don't forget the new iTunes. Also, Apple will probably announce that they are bringing iTunes Store to India, Indonesia, South Korea, Russia and Turkey.

You mean the iTunes Music Store, yes? Because many, if not all, of these countries already have the iTunes Stores which are only limited to apps and such. At least, that's the case in Russia.

Long live the Mini!

Bunch of people I know are switching from using just a MacBook to a Mini/iPad Combo (me included).
I'll finally be switching from a Mac Pro for the first time since 2008 if they refresh the mini. With Thunderbolt I can attach an external enclosure for PCI expansion, and USB 3 and updated chipsets will make it a faster machine than my aging 8-core tower. I guess there really is no reason to be holding out any longer.

I just hope they don't solder the HDD like in the Retina Macbook. I have a 256GB SSD I want to use in this new 2012 Mac Mini once I get my hands on it.

You bet. I think that's what's coming. Thankfully reputable businesses like OWC always figure out how to sell after-market upgrades so we are not left out in the dust or at the mercy of ultra-expensive Apple-only upgrades.

Quadcore CPU for the base model? :D

Exactly. The only thing they are gonna launch is exactly the ONE thing that shouldn't be launched - the irrelevant iPad mini.

Everything else will just be a speed bump and nothing more than that.
Hmm...I think plenty of people would disagree that a smaller iPad is irrelevant. :)

There are external thunderbolt PCI enclosures?

Interesting... I googled it after I read your post and found this,

So this is for professional video and audio pros...

This will be my next media server. I switched to internet only services and canceled cable, satellite, telephone. What is needed is a 4 hour APU/UPS to power the modem, router, phone box, portable phone base and other low power devices. POTS phone works during power outages and that is a feature not a bug. I don't know if someone has already solved that in an elegant way, but Apple could certainly do it with a specialized device or an accessory to one of its boxes such as ATV, TM, or others.

BTW the monthly savings so far exceed $200. I just have to figure how to get untethered HBO. You know, without using someone else's code for HBOGO.

Rocketman

I bet any money the next rumour will be "New iPhone to be announced at next week's media event"

Just about everything else is rumoured to be updated in some form or other - Mac desktop and laptops (even talks of the 15" RMBP getting internal design tweaks), iPad Mini, tweaked iPad 3.

The only thing missing is the iPod, but it'll still make a cameo as they release that new iTunes 11 we were shown last month.

October is very late for product updates for Apple. Whenever they update an iMac this late in the year, it's a modest update, then the kick-ass update will be in February. This really honks me off. They did this w/ the iMacs a few years ago - last update was the last white plastic iMac, but the first Intel model of the iMac. People bought them like crazy, only for the aluminum model w/ far more features to come out 4 months later.

I feel a tremor in the force that the iMac update will be modest - perhaps some more thunderbolt ports, - but the REALLY big update, one that they cannot meet in time for Christmas shopping, will be retina displays in the spring for the 27" (or bigger) displays and the cinema displays. I think that that has been why they've been so delayed in coming out w/ new iMacs - they want to do a Retina Display version - but the display panel manufacturers cannot meet demand on the larger retina displays on all the iDevices and portables.

As an aside, who else hates it when people add the single word "Fact" as a way to add emphasis to an opinion or conjecture? I know I do.

Well I dont care. Fact.

anyway I only said that because Apple said its getting updated next year, its not my opinion. go complain about something else.

So we can install a video card we want? How will the OS X recognize it and how do you install drivers for it?

Technically yeah, you can install a video card over thunderbolt (it's just PCIe). It's not practically possible today, though.

The problem is two-fold: one could be drivers, the other is thunderbolt.

The problem with the port is that it doesn't have enough bandwidth to totally replace that internal PCIe connection; a PCIe x16 port delivers something like 64Gb/s, whereas the current implementation of thunderbolt tops out at 10Gb/s.

Apparently using special optical cables can take this up to 100Gb/s, so it may be possible in the future.

As for drivers, Apple provides no support. There is no support for replacing your graphics card model on any Mac other than the Mac Pro, and even that it limited to certain models Apple re-sells. Since chips in the same series often share a common architecture, the driver often ends up being compatible (although still unsupported) for a number of cards.

Why not throw the MacPro in with the tea leaves?

So here's what is supposed to appear:
- iPad mini
- 13 inch Retina macbook
- new Mac Mini

I wonder how many at Apple are laughing at the foregone conclusion that there is an event announced by everyone but Apple for Oct 23rd? Why don't you all wait with the tea leaves for when/if they really do announce this event?
If I was Tim Cook I would put the thing off until January just to stick it to all the rabid gabby soothsayers.
"Uh, we never said Oct 23rd...(audibly laughing to himself)."

Shatner on SNL

Has anyone seen the skit from the 1980's where Shatner is hosting SNL
and he does this skit where he tells the Trekkies at the convention
to "get a life"?
